Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Harnessing the Wind

I shoot my head out the window, looking around quickly. My eyes land on a pale, ghostly figure, about 7 meters in height. It stands up straight, on all four of its legs, and turns its head around, looking straight at me. Its eyes are a dark blue, a contrast to its white scales, and the pupils are shaped with a red ring outlined on it with the sharp pupil in the center being white. It takes a moment, then begins unfolding its wings that were neatly folded to its back.

"Clyde! Start driving!"

The car begins picking up speed as it heads out the parking lot. As Clyde turns a corner, a deafening roar can be heard ringing throughout the vicinity, rattling the ground and breaking all glass near it. Luckily, we were far enough away, but the roar left a ringing sound in my ears, and probably Clyde's as well. I climb out the window and get on the deck of the truck.

"Focus on driving!" I scream at him. The white dragon takes off with a heavy flap of its wings and begins speeding toward us, flying just above the cars. I look around the deck, trying to find anything of use. There's only a few wooden planks and metal rods strapped to it. I guess I'll have to make use of these, I think to myself. I break a wooden plank in half using my knee, making the break look sharp. It's not conductible, so I'll need to… the dragon gets closer, and once it gets within 20 meters, I wind up my hand into a stance similar to a baseball throw, give it everything I have!

I throw with every ounce of my strength, sending the sharp wooden plank flying straight into its face. The sharp edge of the plank only made a scratch on the forehead of the dragon, but it still did something. I repeated this process with every plank I could find, but the only result was a whole lot of scratches and one angry dragon. It lets out another loud roar, but not as loud as the one before. It opens its mouth and begins gathering what seems to be air. As soon as my eyes laid upon this, it felt like every cell of my body wanted to move.

"Clyde! Move left one lane!" I urgently scream. Clyde follows almost immediately, not caring about the blinkers. I feel a strong gust of wind, but I crouch down, keeping myself from flying off. Looking right, I see a nearby empty car go flying backward into the air before it crashes down, blowing up in flames. Thank god we didn't get hit by the main blast.

I grab a metal rod and get in a stance like throwing a spear. I draw electricity from my left hand, conduct it through my body, and pour it into my right hand, which is holding the rod on my shoulder. A small smirk begins appearing on my face. What is this feeling? The rush of adrenaline, the thrill of the fight. It reminds me how I felt when I was fighting Rusty in the ring. The dragon swerves just behind us again and begins charging up the same attack that sent the other car flying. As soon as I see the mouth open and the wind gathering, I send the spear hurling into the mouth of the dragon, but since we are moving forward, and I threw the rod backwards, it's more like I just pushed it into the mouth of the dragon. It manages to get the gust of wind out as a misfire while losing balance from the rod, but not enough to send us flying straight forward. The car swerves, drifting to the side, but Clyde manages to slow it down enough to a rough stop as we hit a street light, leaving the car with a small dent on the front.

"You good, bro?" I ask Clyde, looking through the back window.

"Yea, just barely. Where the hell do they even get these creatures?" Clyde furiously exclaims. I chuckle, before hopping off and beginning to make my way towards The Dragon of The Skies with another rod in my hand. Clyde gets out of the car and follows closely behind me.

"What are you going to do?" Clyde curiously asks while making sure to stay behind me a decent distance, probably for safety reasons.

"Making sure I finish what the overgrown lizard started."

When we find the dragon, it was lying on the floor, its head twitching as it chokes on the metal rod I threw earlier. Its eyes meet mine, as if it's seeing through the mask. The Info Nexus appears in front of me.

"Killing the [Legendary Dragon] before you will grant you the achievement 'Dragon Killer' plus a [Legendary Enchant Mutation]. Enchant mutations give extra properties to already existing enchants." From what I already know, only around thirty people in the whole world have the Dragon Killer achievement. I raise the rod, preparing to deal the final blow to the limp creature beneath me. It closes its eyes as if it has accepted its fate. I hold the position of raising the rod for a moment, looking down, but I hesitate. Why am I hesitating, I think to myself.

After heaving a deep sigh, I toss the rod to the side. I lean down and hold the mouth of the dragon open, causing it to open its eyes in surprise, but it doesn't resist. I reach my hand in, feeling around the inside of the slimy, bloody mouth. Why am I even doing this? This is such a stupid idea, I think to myself. I grab the rod and carefully pull it out, my hand covered in saliva. I throw it to the side and clean my hands off with nearby water from a puddle. Clyde, clearly afraid, begins backing up slowly towards the car.

The dragon slowly stands up and roars while spreading its wings, the shockwave causing my cloak to fly back, but I stand completely still. It brings its head to my face, our noses nearly touching. Its eyes meet mine, as if it's staring into my soul. After a few seconds that felt like multiple minutes, the dragon bows its head and places it in front of my feet. Info Nexus pops up again, this time in two separate panels. The first one reads:

"Achievement Unlocked: 'Worlds First,' be the first to do or make something in the world. Reward: Wind Burst. Achievement Rank: Legendary"

The second one reads "Achievement unlocked: 'Tamer of The Skies', defeat and tame the Dragon of The Skies. Reward: Stormwing Tempest. Achievement Rank: One of A Kind."

I close out the information, deciding to read it later, and press my hand against the dragon's head.

"Windborne. I'm going to name you Windborne."

"Can I give it a nickname," Clyde screams from behind our crashed car.

"Sure. What were you thinking?"

"Windy could be a cute nickname," Clyde says as he slowly begins making his way towards me. I nod in approval.

"Windy it is, then," I say, looking back at the dragon once more. It closes its eyes, before smoke begins surrounding it. Actually a more accurate description would be clouds. The dragon shrinks twice. The first time, it shrinks to about half its original size, at around three and a half meters, still well above that of an average human. The next, a more drastic size change. Windborne shrinks so small that he could probably fit in the palm of my hand.

He lets out a little roar, almost similar to a kitten's meow, before lifting off the ground with his tiny legs and making his way over to me. He slips into the hood of my cloak, and I could feel him nestle up and get cozy inside my hair. From the movements, it seems he's using my hair as a blanket. I tilt my head side to side, but it seems he is firmly in there, and from the slight vibrations and purring noises, I think he's sleeping. Me and Clyde look at each other, both of us clearly surprised even though my face isn't visible. We both get back in the car, back out of the lamp post, and begin making our way home. I take my mask and hood off to look in a mirror, checking my hair. I can feel Windy on my head, but he isn't visible due to how small he is and how well my hair covers him, even though his scales are white and my hair is black.

As we drive off, a helicopter flies over the car and lands at the spot where we just were, dealing with the dragon. I open the window and look back, seeing a tall man in a suit step out. Though, something about that face seems familiar to me. I close the window and get back in.

"Well that was something, I can't believe I actually did that," I say to Clyde.

"I didn't expect you to do that either. You've grown soft," he teases.

"Yea, yea shut up and drive, you glorified loaf of bread."

I connect my phone to the speakers of the car and begin playing music from our favorite romance anime. Yes we both watch romance, and of course the singer is a girl.

The drive back home this time was filled with joyous singing and hysterious laughter.
