While everyone raised their tally in urgency, fearing that they will be losing this round of bet, he stalled raising his tally, playing around with it as he knew that he didn't only want to "buy" and "win" the auction so easily.
He wanted to make sure that Evangeline knew that in the moment she had seen someone who had bought her, someone who would obviously be a worse choice than him, he would come to appear, saving her like a damsel in distress.
