The sea?
The thought lingered in Evangeline's mind, vast and unfathomable. The sea was endless, deep, a place she had only ever known through stories and illustrations. But who truly lived there? Fish, of course. And… mermaids. Those were the only beings she had ever heard associated with the ocean.
But then— Mermaids? And scales..
Her breath caught.
Mermaids were always described as creatures whose lower halves were that of a fish, their bodies covered in shimmering scales. If that was the case, then—
"My mother once told me," Evangeline said slowly, lifting her gaze to Morningstar with a faint frown tugging at her brows, "that I was born with scales." She hesitated before asking, voice quieter now, almost afraid of the answer. "Are mermaids… really somewhere in this world?"
"Mermaids?" Morningstar echoed, tilting his head slightly as though weighing the word. "I suppose they are."
She frowned deeper at that. "Suppose?"
