HARPER
Julian slipped into the room three hours later. He paused by the door, eyes darting around in the darkness, and I felt the weight of his gaze settle on me.
I was awake. I hadn't slept at all. But I doubted he knew that, because he started creeping toward the closet. I watched him in silence.
He stripped out of his shirt, leaving his pants on, then disappeared into the bathroom. A few minutes later, he returned with a towel draped around his neck, water still dripping from his hair. He was halfway through drying it when I finally broke the silence.
"Where did you go?"
Julian stiffened. His eyes narrowed in my direction as I slowly sat up. There was no reason to pretend anymore.
"I called you," I added softly. "You didn't answer."
He said nothing. He just stared at me like I was a stranger, someone he was seeing for the first time. The look made something hot twist in my chest. I had apologized. What more did he want from me? He was acting childish now.
