The morning light had just begun to seep through the glass façade of the Bergen Global tower when Mark's car came to a stop outside the main entrance. The city was already awake, impatient and loud, but inside the car, it was quiet, tense, almost too still for two people who shared what they did.
Lilly sat in the passenger seat, her fingers playing absently with the strap of her bag. She'd showered quickly that morning, brushed her hair back into a neat twist, and applied just enough makeup to look composed, but beneath the thin layer of professionalism, she was running on little sleep.
Mark's knuckles tightened around the steering wheel as he watched her stare out the window. She didn't notice; she was somewhere else in her head, far away from him. And he hated that.
He hated even more that a man in a white coat, someone she barely knew, had found a way to slip into that space she kept hidden from everyone else.
