Sunny looked upon the collapsed form of the woman. It hadn't been even a second since he said he was here to help. And she just collapsed. Of course, he was here to help. Of course, he didn't lie; his flaw prevented him from doing so. Not that he didn't have several workarounds now.
But that was not the point. Sunny sensed several shadows converging on this location. He quickly picked up the woman. Shadows rising like tangible things to engulf them both. A strange, yet pleasant feeling of coolness and silence washed over Sunny. Before he returned to the world. The woman was still in his arms, carried in a bridal style.
Was he uncomfortable? Very. Was the woman attractive?
Sunny let out a cough, dispelling the wandering thoughts.
He had to focus. He needed to get in contact with someone.
And he knew the perfect being for such a situation.
"This is Caera from the Lance organization. What may I help you with?"
There was a pause.
"It's me, Sunless. Is Arthur around?"
Another pause. Slightly longer than the previous one.
Suddenly a male voice came through.
"How may I assist?"
Was Arthur's humorous response without any of the amusement there should be. Arthur knew Sunny never called unless it was something important.
"I need you to get to me, then the three of us out. Can you do that?"
Arthur let out a chuckle, not worrying about the third person.
"Location?"
A slight pause. Sunny suddenly became nervous, even if slightly.
"Falcon Scott."
The slowly growing smile on Arthur's lips died an ugly death. Only an emotionless facade remained.
"On my way." It was his simple, emotionless response.
The next second he was gone, godstepping through the world with ease.
Sunny dashed out of a building, a woman still in his arms.
Shadows engulfed him once more, disappearing and reappearing a few houses away.
He hadn't expected to shadow step to need so much more control for carrying other people. Nor did he expect the "people" chasing him to be at least high-tier masters. He knew, this was not normal. And he started suspecting the clans.
The next moment Sunny's vision was engulfed by violet flames, his eyes widening as the flames tore through the buildings around him. Only the building he was hiding inside remained unscathed.
The next moment Sunny felt the shadows retreating. Obviously, knowing whose attention they attracted.
Sunny vanished, reappearing by Arthur's side.
"They are retreating."
Arthur nodded, his gaze focused.
The next moment Arthur grasped onto Sunny and the woman. Ready to teleport all three of them.
But then he stopped. He felt the shadows circling. Then he felt it. Another person.
"Give me a minute."
Sunny wasn't even given enough time to nod as Arthur vanished without another word.
At the same moment he vanished, he stood in front of a man collapsed against a wall. Bleeding. Exhausted.
Arthur felt the attackers already running back. They obviously had a good sensor with them.
"Troublesome" was the only word that left Arthur's lips. His emotional facade turned into a scowl.
He grabbed the man gently. Running back to Sunny instead of teleporting. Gods knew that this man's body couldn't handle it.
Suddenly Arthur saw–no, felt something approaching. Arthur threw a wall of destruction in the direction of the projectile. Only for his eyes to widen as the frost-covered arrow punched right through them. Melting, but not losing strength.
Arthur's form blurred; in the same nanosecond, he was already on the ground. Protecting the man's limp, yet alive body.
As soon as the arrow hit the building, a massive explosion rang out. But that was not the worst of it. No, the worst was the tiny needles of ice shards like rain falling from everywhere. Suddenly every single ice shard stopped mid air, levitating for a brief second. Before shooting straight for the unconscious man.
Arthur's arm extended, aether manifesting into a physical shield.
It was obvious that destruction alone couldn't handle this attack. Only because of the mind-numbing speed of the projectiles.
Small explosions rang as the ice shards collided with the barrier. Each projectile formed a minuscule crack.
Arthur's eyes narrowed. Watching the projectiles. Dissecting they're very nature.
The ice was strange, reminiscent of the winter beast. But Arthur knew better than to assume it was a memory from the titan. He had killed it with his own hands after all.
But the thought kept nagging him. Almost as if he was missing something.
Then the realization struck like thunder.
Arthur couldn't receive memories anymore. That Arthur knew for a fact. At least not from kills. He could still get them from people. But what happened if a creature gave a memory that couldn't be received by the user?
The natural explanation was that the memory was either destroyed. Or dropped as a physical thing to pick up, somewhere near the location.
And as the thought finished in Arthur's mind. His barrier shattered.
Static Void formed at the same moment.
Arthur let go of the man, summoning destruction.
He spread it, thinned, shaped, and sharpened it.
Until every ice shard had an opposing destruction shard.
Arthur took a knee by the man once again. Summoning another, a bit smaller aether barrier around them both.
Then time flowed again. Several deafening explosions rang out once more, far more powerful, far more destructive.
Until finally, it was quiet.
Arthur expanded his senses just in case, and upon not finding an enemy, only Sunny hidden in the shadows a bit away, he dropped the barrier.
He then slowly and carefully picked up the man, sprinting across the ice-covered rooftops at a moderate speed.
His mind blazed with curiosity and a slight bit of dread.
Who were the attackers? What were their ranks? How many? How many other such weapons and aspects did they have?
The questions buzzed like an angered beehive in Arthur's mind. But in the end, he pushed away the thoughts. What mattered now was getting out of this place and getting the injured duo medical help.
