As we last left off, Harry heard Dumbledore's words and replied, "Professor, please listen. This one swore an oath before my parents' graves: if I do not kill Voldemort, I am not worthy of being a man! I hope the Professor will grant me this!"
"Oh, Harry, but Voldemort is powerful. He is certainly not someone a first-year wizard can stand against."
"This one cut off his foot tonight. If I am fully prepared, it is not impossible to try."
"But I should not allow you to approach such danger again..."
Dumbledore reasoned with him again and again. Though he sounded sincere, Harry grew suspicious.
He recalled from his past life how Chao Gai and the others wanted to join the stronghold on Mount Liang, but the leader, Wang Lun, refused. It was Wu Yong who used a goading tactic on Lin Chong, inciting him to kill Wang Lun. This way, the new group gained a good reputation and took control of Mount Liang.
This Dumbledore seems to be dissuading me, but he is secretly fanning the flames. Could he be like that scoundrel Wu Yong, plotting something in secret?
Harry's mind turned. He nodded and said, "Professor, all that you have said comes from the heart. How could I not listen? I will defer to you."
"...Harry." Dumbledore sighed. "You are truly the most perceptive wizard I have ever met."
Harry snorted. "My body may be drunk, but my mind is clear. Professor, why not speak plainly? Why must you keep testing me?"
"Very well, Harry. I need you to face Voldemort. Not a panicked encounter like tonight."
He waited for Harry to ask why, but Harry merely said, "That is not difficult. But you must grant this one thing."
"You may ask."
"When this one fought that scoundrel, I used many spells, but he just cast some Protego charm and blocked them all. I have been enrolled for a year, but I haven't learned anything useful!"
"Professor Flitwick is a famous dueling champion. Why does he only teach spells that are for show?"
Dumbledore smiled. "Learning magic must be a gradual process. Many spells are meant for you to learn in your upper years."
"However... I believe we can make an exception for you."
With that, he wrote a letter and told Harry to give it to Flitwick.
Harry took the letter. "I have disturbed you much tonight. This one will take his leave."
As he was about to go, Dumbledore spoke again. "Harry, don't you want to know why I need you to face Voldemort?"
"This one has an oath. As long as I kill Voldemort, no other reason matters."
With that, he walked out of the office.
When Harry returned to the common room, Ron and Hermione were already waiting anxiously.
Seeing Harry, they both rushed up to him.
"Harry, what did you and Professor Dumbledore talk about?"
"Are we going to lose points for being in the Forest at night?"
"Is You-Know-Who really back?"
The two were full of questions, and Harry answered them one by one.
When they learned Dumbledore was not punishing them for the night excursion, they both breathed a sigh of relief. When they heard the one trying to steal the Stone was indeed Voldemort, their hearts nearly leaped out of their throats. And when they learned Harry was going to fight Voldemort, their hearts felt as if they had frozen solid and dropped into the pits of their stomachs.
"Harry, are you mad? How can you possibly beat You-Know-Who?" Hermione said in terror. "Why would Professor Dumbledore let you do this?"
"I don't think Harry can't beat him, but at least wait until we've learned all the spells!" Ron said urgently. "We only know useless magic right now!"
The two were clearly worried, but Harry just smiled. "Big Sister, Brother, do not panic. If I didn't have a thorough plan, how would I dare to fight that scoundrel?"
Seeing they couldn't persuade him, the two fell silent.
The next day, Harry went to find Flitwick and gave him the letter. The diminutive professor read it carefully and said joyfully, "Harry, it is rare for anyone to be regarded so highly by Professor Dumbledore."
"Rest assured, I will train you to be exceptionally skilled in the months before the summer holiday."
Flitwick had received gifts from Harry and had also been enlightened by him, breaking through his own mental barriers. Their relationship was one of teacher, friend, and student.
Now that Dumbledore had ordered him to teach Harry practical and powerful magic, he naturally brought out all his best skills. Coupled with the decades of worldly experience he imparted, Harry's abilities advanced by leaps and bounds in just two months.
One day, after evening class, Harry bid farewell to Hermione and Ron and went to find Flitwick.
As he was going up the stairs, the staircases suddenly began to move of their own accord, changing their destination. Seeing the stairs misbehaving again, Harry grew annoyed and was about to draw his saber and chop them.
Before he could, Hedwig suddenly swooped down, dropped a letter, and flew away.
Harry opened the letter and saw a single sentence: Follow the stairs.
Although there was no signature, Harry recognized the handwriting. It was identical to the letter he had given Flitwick. Who else could it be but Dumbledore?
He thought: That damned scoundrel! No wonder we couldn't find the Stone before. All these moving staircases were like a Bagua formation. It was this scoundrel pulling strings in the background!
He tore up the letter, readied his saber and wand, and headed where the staircase led.
He arrived on the fourth floor and walked down a corridor, where he saw a door marked "Forbidden." Now, the lock on this door was broken, and it was slightly ajar.
Harry and the others had searched the castle many times, but this was the first time they had seen this place.
Harry thought: It really was that old man using a blinding trick, so we couldn't find it!
He was about to push the door open when he heard someone call from behind, "Harry!"
He turned and saw it was Hermione and Ron.
"Ah, Big Sister, Brother, why have you come?"
Hermione said, "You always go to the dungeons to find Professor Flitwick, but today you went upstairs. Harry... are you going to find You-Know-Who?"
Harry couldn't deny it and confessed, "It is as you say. This journey is perilous. Big Sister and Brother, you should go back."
Ron said firmly, "Harry, I can't let you take this risk alone."
Hermione also nodded emphatically. "You said it yourself: 'If we don't gather in righteousness, we aren't worthy of being Gryffindors.'"
Both of them knew how terrifying Voldemort was, yet neither was willing to let Harry go alone. Harry was
deeply moved.
He clasped his hands. "This one is fortunate in three lifetimes to have met heroes like you, Big Sister and Brother!"
"After I slaughter that scoundrel, I will become sworn siblings with you both!"
The three pushed open the door and immediately heard music. Following the sound, they saw a harp playing by itself. Beside it lay a sleeping, snoring, three-headed dog.
Hermione's heart pounded. "I was right," she whispered. "The three-headed dog was one of the magical creatures Hagrid mentioned to the stranger."
Ron peeked around. "Oh, the entrance is a trapdoor, right next to that big dog's paw."
The three crept forward quietly. The trapdoor opened onto pitch darkness, with no bottom in sight.
Hermione and Ron felt their hearts clench. Just as they were about to steel themselves, they saw Harry flip over the edge and drop into the darkness.
And so it was, they lifted the door beneath the hound, a black hole swallowing the light. Granger clenched her fists in fear, Weasley hesitated in doubt, but the scarred-face lad leaped first to explore. If you wish to know what lies beneath, you must listen to the next chapter.
