When they reached the Khan's private wing, Arkan entered the chamber first to speak with the Khan, leaving Xiao Zhi waiting nervously in the hallway. The silence in the corridor made her thumping heart sound unbearably loud in her own ears.
Xiao Zhi was never a patient person. Back in her own world, she would be scrolling through her phone to kill the anxiety. Here, she only had her fingernails to bite.
After what felt like an eternity but was likely only a few minutes, the heavy door opened again. Arkan stepped out, his face straight and unreadable as always, making Xiao Zhi even more nervous.
But much to her relief, he gave her a small, sharp nod.
"He will see you. Briefly." Arkan stressed the last word, eyes giving her a serious warning not to try any more stunts.
Taking a deep, shaky breath, Xiao Zhi stepped inside.
