Jeremy's eyes widened in alarm as he heard the approaching footsteps. Without a second thought, he grabbed Everly's wrist and yanked her up the stairs. Their footsteps echoed through the stairwell like a herd of stampeding elephants, surely alerting the people who had been talking earlier.
To his relief, the voices suddenly went silent, but there was no sign of anyone chasing them. The people below must have decided that whatever was going on upstairs wasn't worth their time. Jeremy breathed a sigh of relief and slowed down, his heart pounding in his chest.
They kept running until they reached the rooftop. Of course, the door was locked. However Everly, being the resourceful and slightly crazy person she was, pulled out a hairpin and started fiddling with the lock. She struggled for a few seconds, muttering something about "professional thief's tricks."
