Because Robert suddenly regretted Joffrey's engagement to Margaery Tyrell and wanted to cancel it, intending for Joffrey to marry Eddard Stark's eldest daughter, Sansa. But Jon Arryn strongly opposed, believing that doing so would be a great insult to the Warden of the South and would lead to a complete break between The Reach and the Iron Throne.
The two argued fiercely. Robert accused Jon Arryn of wanting to marry his own son to Sansa, and at the height of the argument, Robert even drew his sword.
Ultimately, the quarrel subsided with Barristan's persuasion. It is unknown if Jon Arryn was too agitated during the argument, causing some hidden illnesses to surface. After returning to the Prime Ministers Tower, he collapsed and lost consciousness completely. It seemed he was not long for this world.
That night, Lysa Tully took his son and left the Red Keep, returning to Gulltown by boat, and some unfavorable rumors began to circulate in King's Landing.
For example, the reason Robert wanted to cancel Joffrey and Margaery's engagement was because he had taken a liking to Margaery and wanted to take her as his mistress.
Another rumor was that Jon was not ill at all, but had been poisoned, and the poisoner was in the Red Keep.
All sorts of rumors and gossip flew around, making it impossible to discern the truth.
All the rumors and gossip, along with the intelligence from King's Landing, were sent to Lynd. After reading them, Lynd couldn't help but sigh at the strong inertia of history, which could not be affected by minor changes.
The intelligence also mentioned that Robert had already decided in the Small Council to go to Winterfell to invite Eddard Stark to become the Kings Hand. This matter infuriated Stannis, who had always coveted the position of Kings Hand, and he left King's Landing that very night, returning to Dragonstone.
Judging from the time the intelligence was sent, Jon Arryn should have already died by the time Lynd received the intelligence, and Robert should also be on his way to Winterfell.
In addition, another piece of news particularly caught Lynd's attention: the Doomsday Faith appeared in King's Landing and had close contact with Littlefinger Petyr Baelish.
While the great plague a few years ago significantly boosted the Seven Gods Church's prestige in the Seven Kingdoms, it also gave rise to some minor faiths named after disasters; the Doomsday Faith was one of them.
When Lynd first heard of the Doomsday Faith, he didn't pay much attention, as he regarded it as a mutated god of calamity faith.
Because Lynd demanded that the god of calamity faith not use the great plague to proselytize in Westeros, only spreading its faith in Essos, there was a lack of a disaster-centric faith in Westeros. This allowed the Doomsday Faith, a religious belief, to spread among the common people of the Seven Kingdoms.
Due to the fear of the plague, the Doomsday Faith spread rapidly, quickly permeating the lower strata of society throughout the Seven Kingdoms and beginning to spread to the upper echelons. The Seven Gods Church also noticed this and felt that this faith was somewhat similar to the god of calamity faith, so they specifically sent people to inquire with Lynd about the reason.
It was then that Lynd discovered the abnormality of the Doomsday Faith. He joined forces with the Seven Gods Church to investigate the Doomsday Faith missionaries. The result was that all the missionaries were extremely fanatical Doomsday believers who would commit suicide once captured.
However, even so, Lynd's people managed to capture a few alive and administered truth serum, extracting some hidden information about the Doomsday Faith from their mouths.
These missionaries were just ordinary fishermen and sailors who, after encountering a pirate attack, were captured by the pirates and sent to a cave on an island. In the cave, they witnessed a Doomsday miracle and were instantly inspired and enlightened, becoming Doomsday believers.
However, when specifically asked what Doomsday miracle they saw, it was as if a restriction on their bodies was triggered, and they all went mad, speaking gibberish that was utterly incomprehensible.
After this joint crackdown by the Seven Gods Church and Lynd, the Doomsday believers suddenly seemed to vanish, all going into hiding, and even the Seven Gods Church could not find any trace of their existence.
The Seven Gods Church quickly lost interest in the matter, merely instructing the Inquisition to keep an eye out for traces of Doomsday believers while searching for witches and the like. Lynd, however, took the matter very seriously, not only having Baelon and Roso establish a special department to track down Doomsday believers, but also allocating a large sum of money specifically for this task.
However, there had been no new information until now, and it was unexpected that Doomsday believers would appear in King's Landing at such a delicate time.
The reason Lynd was so concerned about the Doomsday believers was that when he learned that those Doomsday missionaries were abducted by pirates and sent to a cave on a cold island, he felt that something was amiss, possibly related to the Iron Islands. He sent the interrogation reports of those Doomsday missionaries to the Iron Islands, asking Asha to see if any Iron Islands people were among the abductors described by the Doomsday missionaries. As a result, one of Asha's subordinates indeed recognized someone among the abductors described by the Doomsday missionaries. That person was a boatswain on a longship of the Iron Fleet, who had already rebelled from the Iron Islands with Victarion and followed Euron.
It was precisely because of this that Lynd believed Euron was behind this Doomsday Faith.
Therefore, when Lynd received intelligence that Doomsday believers had appeared in King's Landing, he immediately prepared to send intelligence, asking the people in King's Landing to first control the Doomsday believers, and he would return to interrogate them personally.
However, before his order could be sent out, he received a new piece of intelligence. This intelligence was sent directly from King's Landing, without passing through Summerhall, and it contained only one item: the winter horn was lost.
