Chapter 128 - alpha

The corridor was quiet—

until someone noticed the wall.

A portrait.

Old.

Untouched.

Section E slowed.

Then stopped.

"…since when do we have this?" Percy muttered.

Five children stared back.

Small.

Sharp-eyed.

Too aware for their age.

Jay.Adam.Michael.Samuel.Ava.

Ten.Maybe eleven.

And behind them—

Raphael.

Fifteen.

Already watching like nothing escaped him.

But that wasn't what froze them.

It was Shadow.

A massive black panther—

resting beside them.

Not chained.

Not controlled.

Just… there.

Alive.

"…you've got to be kidding me," Aries whispered.

Cin stepped closer.

Eyes narrowing.

"That's not edited."

"No," Yuri said quietly.

"It's real."

The next frame—

smaller.

Messier.

Jay—laughing.

Actually laughing.

Her hand buried in Shadow's fur.

The panther leaning into her like it belonged there.

Adam trying to climb him.

Michael failing.

Samuel pretending he wasn't scared.

Ava sitting calmly like this was normal.

Silence.

Keifer stared the longest.

Not jealous.

Not threatened.

Just… processing.

"You don't need to go to party jay if you dont want."

Raphael says it like a fact.

Like a warning.

Jay doesn't stop walking.

"I know."

"Then don't."

Simple.

Easy.

Wrong.

"They expect me to."

Her voice is flat.

Controlled.

"They expect a lot of things."

Raphael's tone doesn't change.

"You don't follow expectations."

Jay exhales slowly.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Thinking.

"This isn't about expectations."

A pause.

"It's about control."

Raphael's gaze shifts to her.

Interested now.

"If I don't show up," she continues,

"they start talking."

Another step.

"They start assuming."

"And if you do?"

"They remember."

Her voice drops slightly.

"Who they're dealing with."

Silence stretches.

Not empty.

Understanding.

"You don't like it."

Raphael says it quietly.

Not a question.

Jay's lips press slightly.

Barely noticeable.

"I don't need to like it."

Another step.

Closer to the doors.

Closer to noise.

"I just need to own it."

Raphael watches her for a second longer.

Then—

a faint nod.

"Then don't hesitate inside."

Jay almost smiles.

Almost.

"I never do."

Groups left separately.

As planned.

As always.

Section E first.

Keifer.Aries.Percy.Yuri.Cin.Mayo.Edrix.Angelo.

"No connections," Keifer reminded.

They nodded once.

And walked.

Adam, Michael, Samuel—

different route.

"We don't know each other," Adam said.

Michael smirked.

"Never seen you before."

Samuel didn't even look back.

Ava—

stayed behind.

Watching the door close.

Then—

Jay and Raphael.

Together.

Silence.

"You're thinking too much," Raphael said.

"You're talking too little," she replied.

A pause.

Then—

they moved.

The entrance was a long stretch of glass and reflection, guarded by men who didn't move unless necessary.

Black suits.

Still eyes.

Hands that didn't fidget.

They weren't there to stop people.

They were there to remind them—

they could.

When Section E arrived, no one stopped them.

But everyone noticed.

The guards didn't speak.

Didn't question.

Just… stepped aside.

Respect didn't need words here.

Inside, the League came alive.

Music heavy enough to settle into your bones.

Lights dimmed just enough to hide intentions.

People laughing louder than they meant to.

Talking faster than they should.

Glasses clinking.

Bodies moving.

Energy building.

But something was missing.

No smoke.

No haze.

No burn in the air.

Aries noticed it first.

His chest didn't tighten.

His breathing didn't fight him.

For once—

it was easy.

Percy glanced at him, catching it in a second.

Didn't say anything.

Didn't need to.

"Alpha's rule," someone whispered nearby.

And just like that—

it became law.

The doors opened again.

This time—

no one missed it.

The guards straightened.

The music didn't stop.

But the room… shifted.

Jay walked in like she didn't belong to the chaos around her.

Like none of it could touch her.

Black. Clean. Controlled.

Every step measured.

Every movement deliberate.

Raphael walked beside her—

and somehow made the air heavier.

They didn't look at anyone.

And yet—

everyone looked at them.

Conversations lowered.

Laughter softened.

People moved… just slightly out of the way.

Alpha.

Jay's gaze swept the room once.

Cold.

Unreadable.

Perfect.

Then—

for half a second—

it slipped.

Section E.

Percy mid-laugh.

Cin arguing over something stupid.

Mayo dragging someone to dance.

Aries—relaxed.

Keifer—watching her.

Something in her expression broke.

Not fully.

Not visibly.

But enough.

A ghost of a smile.

Gone before it existed.

She turned away instantly.

Leader again.

The League did not welcome people.

It evaluated them.

A long glass corridor stretched ahead, reflecting every movement, every hesitation, every doubt.

And along it—

bodyguards.

Still.

Silent.

Unblinking.

They didn't check invitations.

They checked you.

Section E walked through like they belonged.

Not arrogant.

Not careless.

Just… certain.

No one stopped them.

But everyone noticed.

Inside—

the League came alive.

Music pulsed low and deep, like a heartbeat you couldn't escape.

Lights shifted in gold and shadow.

Laughter rose and fell.

People moved too close, spoke too fast, existed too loudly.

A party.

But controlled.

And then—

someone noticed.

"No smoke?"

Another voice, confused, "Where's the smoking section?"

There wasn't one.

Ashtrays sat empty.

The air was clean.

Saw it instantly.

Said nothing.

Across the room—

Jay wasn't there yet.

But her decision already was.

Near the bar, a group of boys leaned back like they owned the place.

They didn't.

But no one had told them yet.

"She banned smoking?" one scoffed.

"Why?" another added. "Health reasons?"

A third laughed. "Or control issues?"

They smirked.

Confident.

Ignorant.

"Maybe she just doesn't like it," one suggested.

Another shook his head. "No one bans something like this just because they don't like it."

"Then why?"

Silence, just for a second.

"Maybe she can't handle it."

A pause.

"Or maybe," another added, lowering his voice slightly, "it's not about the smoke."

They exchanged glances.

Thinking.

Guessing.

Missing everything.

Then—She Arrived

The doors opened.

The guards shifted first.

Subtly.

Automatically.

Then the room followed.

Jay walked in.

Black.

Sharp.

Untouchable.

Every step measured.

Every movement controlled.

Raphael beside her—

quieter.

Colder.

More dangerous.

They didn't look at anyone.

But the entire room looked at them.

Respect didn't rise.

It locked into place.

Jay's gaze swept the room once.

Cold.

Precise.

Then—

it slipped.

Section E.

Percy laughing too loudly.

Cin arguing.

Mayo dragging someone into chaos.

Aries—calm.

Keifer—watching her.

For half a second—

she forgot.

A flicker of something softer crossed her face.

Almost a smile.

Gone instantly.

She turned away.

Alpha again.

Near the bar—

a lighter clicked.

A cigarette lit.

Mistake.

Two guards moved immediately.

Silent. Efficient.

The cigarette was taken.

Gone.

"No smoking tonight."

The man frowned. "And why not?"

A pause.

Then—

she answered.

"Because I said so."

They hadn't seen her approach.

Not until she was already there.

The man stiffened.

"Is that the only reason?"

Jay tilted her head slightly.

"Yes."

A beat.

"Or would you like me to give you more?"

Silence.

The man looked away first.

Across the room—

Aries exhaled slowly.

And this time—

Jay didn't look at him.

Because if she did—

it would show.

And she couldn't afford that.

The same group of boys didn't learn.

"She's not that intimidating," one muttered, watching her from a distance.

"Please," another smirked, "give me one night. I'll have her smiling, talking, maybe even following."

Laughter.

"We know how to handle girls."

And that—

was enough.

"Handle?"

The word cut through the noise like it had been waiting to be said.

They turned.

Jay stood there.

Close.

Still.

Unreadable.

"How long have you been here?" she asked calmly.

The question caught him off guard.

"…two years."

She nodded once.

"Two years," she repeated.

A step closer.

"I've been here for ten."

Silence.

"I didn't build this place by being something you could 'handle.'"

Another step.

"I built it by making sure people like you didn't last long enough to try."

No anger.

No raised voice.

Just certainty.

"And if you ever think like that again—"

A pause.

"You won't be here long enough to regret it."

No one laughed this time.

Because suddenly—

they understood.

The party didn't stop.

But it moved.

Adjusted.

Changed.

Music softened.

Lights dimmed.

People stepped aside.

The center of the League cleared—slowly, naturally—like the room itself knew what was coming.

Jay turned.

Walked.

Raphael followed.

And with every step—

she changed.

Not visibly.

Not dramatically.

But undeniably.

The softness—gone.

The flickers—gone.

The almost-smiles—buried.

Only control remained.

The Council

The room wasn't larger.

But it felt heavier.

Six members already seated.

Watching.

Waiting.

Rico's father among them.

Silent.

Calculating.

Raphael sat first.

Jay followed.

And the moment she did—

the air shifted.

Completely.

She didn't lean back.

Didn't relax.

Didn't hesitate.

She owned the silence.

"Let's begin."

But they already had.

Because when Jay looked up—

no one saw a girl.

They saw someone who had grown here.

Learned here.

Survived here.

most people didn't even notice it.

But the ones who mattered did.

The lights dimmed further.

Music lowered.

Guards moved—subtly redirecting people.

The party didn't stop.

But it stepped aside.

For the council.

The room at the center of the League wasn't bigger.

It just felt heavier.

Six seats already filled.

Eyes sharp.

Waiting.

Rico's father among them.

Silent.

Observing.

Raphael entered first.

Sat without hesitation.

Jay followed.

And the moment she sat—

everything changed.

She didn't look like the same person.

The softness—gone.

The flickers—gone.

The almost-smiles—gone.

Only control remained.

Black on black.

Stillness on stillness.

Alpha.

"Let's begin," someone said.

"The League is falling behind."

"Outer sectors are weakening."

"Internal ranks aren't stable."

"And we still haven't acted."

"We needed time."

"We waited."

"For what?"

"For things to fix themselves?"

Voices overlap.

Frustration.

Excuses.

Noise.

Jay walks in.

They don't stop.

So she lets them continue.

Lets them show everything.

Three seconds.

Then—

"Enough."

Silence.

Immediate.

Sharp.

"You're not losing control."

Her voice is calm.

Cold.

"You're refusing to take it."

A member leans forward.

"We can't rush into a fight—"

"We already are."

She cuts him off.

Clean.

"You think staying still keeps you safe?"

A pause.

"It doesn't."

The room tightens.

Now they're listening.

"You delayed action."

"You avoided pressure."

"And now you're reacting instead of leading."

"League development is unstable," someone adds quickly.

"Then stabilize it," Jay replies.

No hesitation.

"No structure. No control. No fear."

Her gaze lifts.

"That's your failure."

Silence again.

He doesn't respond.

Jay stands.

Slow.

Deliberate.

And the room shifts.

"We don't wait anymore."

Simple.

Final.

A pause.

Heavy.

"We move first."

Tension spikes.

Immediate.

"That's risky."

"We're not ready."

"We don't have full control—"

"Then take it."

Her voice doesn't rise.

It cuts.

"You don't prepare for power."

"You use it."

No one interrupts now.

No one dares.

"We initiate pressure on the rival league."

Clear.

Direct.

Unavoidable.

"Outer sectors—prepare for conflict."

"Internal ranks—lock them down."

"No weakness."

"No hesitation."

A member exhales sharply.

"This could cost us everything."

Jay looks at him.

Steady.

Cold.

"So will doing nothing."

Silence drops again.

He looks away first.

Her gaze moves across all of them.

Slow.

Measured.

"You wanted direction."

A pause.

"Here it is."

She leans forward slightly.

And somehow—

that feels heavier than anything else.

"We vote."

No long speech.

No convincing.

No softness.

One by one—

they agree.

Not because they want to.

Because they have to.

Jay sits back.

Calm again.

Untouchable again.

And just like that—

the League chooses war.

Because she told them to.
