Chapter 39 - Problems Arising

He reached out and clasped the offered hand.

"Partners," Satou said.

The watching goblins and orcs erupted — not the overwhelming enthusiasm of a crowd with nothing to lose, but something genuine. The first real acknowledgment that this strange arrangement might actually be worth something.

Later that night, after the celebration had wound down and most of the settlement had gone quiet, Satou made his way back through the orc village alone.

There was something he'd been putting off.

During the chaos of the duel day, several orc warriors had died in skirmishes with human patrols that had pushed too close to Iron Fang territory. The bodies had been prepared for traditional funeral rites. Urgak, after a conversation with Satou about the nature of Spatial Consumption and what it actually did, had given permission — not easily, and not without conditions.

"They died as warriors," Urgak had said, his new High Orc voice carrying weight that his previous voice hadn't quite managed. "If their essence can make this alliance stronger, they would have wanted that. But you tell me what you are doing. No deception between partners."

Satou had told him. All of it. The absorption of skills, the accumulation of abilities from every creature consumed, what it meant that he carried pieces of the alpha wolf and the goblin leader and the human mages inside him now.

Urgak had been quiet for a long time after that.

Then: "Do it. But you honor them by using what you take."

Now, standing before three orc bodies laid out with the care their tribe had given them, Satou activated Spatial Consumption.

The void materialized above the first body — expanding to encompass it fully. Within seconds, the corpse was gone, absorbed into impossible space.

DING!

[You have consumed: Orc Warrior (Level 12)][Skills Acquired:]

[Skill Acquired: Orc's Might (Passive)]Effect: Increases physical strength and endurance significantly. Muscles develop more efficiently, allowing greater power output.

[Skill Acquired: Thick Skin (Passive)]Effect: Skin becomes tougher and more resistant to cuts and abrasions. Provides minor protection against slashing damage.

[Skill Acquired: Battle Fury (Active)]Effect: When health drops below 30%, temporarily gain increased strength, speed, and pain resistance. Duration: 60 seconds. Cooldown: 10 minutes.

The second warrior reinforced what the first had given him — the skills deepening rather than duplicating, as if multiple sources of the same ability stacked its foundation.

The third body was different. This orc had been a shaman.

DING!

[You have consumed: Orc Shaman (Level 15)][Skills Acquired:]

[Skill Acquired: Spirit Sense (Active)]Effect: Can perceive and communicate with nature spirits. Allows for basic shamanic rituals and blessings.

[Skill Acquired: Elemental Affinity — Earth (Passive)]Effect: Natural attunement to earth-based magic. All earth manipulation abilities cost 20% less mana and are 30% more effective. Stacks with existing Earth Manipulation (Intermediate).

[Skill Acquired: Ancestral Knowledge (Passive)]Effect: Can access fragmented memories and wisdom from consumed beings. Information manifests as intuitive knowledge rather than explicit recollection.

[Level Up!][Current Level: 17][Mana capacity increased: 18 → 20][All stats increased.]

Satou held still as the skills settled. The Elemental Affinity was immediately, strangely present — like his Earth Manipulation had snapped into sharper focus. The resistance he'd always felt at the edge of the skill's range, the concentration required to hold structures together, softened. Not gone. But noticeably less.

'Building the village just got significantly easier.'

He pulled up his status screen.

The list had grown considerably. Each skill was a life absorbed — a creature consumed, something taken and made part of him.

Satou looked at it for a long moment.

'What am I becoming?'

He'd started as a human. Been reborn as a goblin. And now he carried pieces of wolves, orcs, rats, snakes, beetles, human mages, and the accumulated combat experience of everything that had tried to kill him and failed. The question wasn't rhetorical — he genuinely wasn't sure how to answer it.

But then he thought of Jessica and Kelvin's faces. Of Grimnir's gruff, dependable presence. Of Lyra's precision, Brak's stubbornness, Mira's quiet watchfulness. Of eighteen goblins who had been nothing but frightened prey two weeks ago and were now building something.

'It doesn't matter what I'm becoming. It matters why.'

He turned away from the spot where the orc bodies had been and walked back toward the construction site.

Far to the north, in a fortress carved from black stone, a figure sat on a throne of bones and layered shadow.

The Demon Lord Malthar had held his territory for three centuries through the simple method of destroying anything that looked like it might eventually threaten him. His network of informants was extensive and reliable, which was why the report he'd just received annoyed him rather than surprised him.

"A goblin," he said. His voice had the quality of stone grinding against stone. "A single goblin has formed an alliance between his tribe and the Iron Fang orcs."

"Yes, my lord," the cowled informant replied. "And he has an ability that artificially triggers evolution. He's been creating Hobgoblins. He evolved the Iron Fang chieftain into a High Orc directly."

"Evolution doesn't work that way," Malthar said flatly. "It requires specific conditions. Combat experience. Consumption of magical energy accumulated over time."

"The reports are consistent across three separate sources, my lord."

Silence.

"This goblin — what do they call him?"

"Satou, my lord."

Malthar was quiet for a longer moment, his ancient mind working through implications.

"Interesting," he said finally. "A goblin with abilities that shouldn't exist, building an alliance between traditional enemies, establishing a settlement in the southern forest." He leaned back. "Send no one yet. Let's see what he builds. If he succeeds, he becomes an asset worth claiming. If he fails, the problem resolves itself."

The cruel smile crossed his features — the expression of someone who had played very long games for a very long time.

"Either way, he has my attention. And very few creatures who earn my attention live comfortably afterward."

In the human capital of Eldoria, a council meeting was drawing to a close.

General Markus spread a map across the table. "The situation in the southern territories has developed beyond scattered tribes. Intelligence indicates an organized alliance between a goblin tribe and the Iron Fang orcs. There are verified reports of earth manipulation sophisticated enough to construct buildings, and an ability to trigger evolution artificially."

"Still just goblins and orcs," a councilor said. "Monsters. We've dealt with their kind before."

"The attack patterns have changed," Markus said. "They're not just surviving. They're building. If we don't assess this properly—"

"Increase patrols in the region," Councilor Thera decided. "Monitor. If it becomes a genuine problem, we address it decisively. For now, we have more pressing matters."

The council moved on.

Markus stayed looking at the map. At the circled area in the southern forest. At the patrol reports that had come back incomplete because the patrols hadn't come back at all.

Something is different about this one, he thought. Someone is different.

He rolled the map and kept it.

Back in the southern forest, unaware of the attention now pointed at him from multiple directions, Satou stood on a hill overlooking the construction site.

Six structures in three days. At this pace, with Elemental Affinity halving his effective mana cost, twenty structures in a week was realistic. A proper defensive perimeter in a month.

"Big brother!"

Jessica and Kelvin came up the hill at a run, their Hobgoblin legs covering the slope quickly.

"Urgak wants to know if you're ready for namings tomorrow," Jessica said. "He has five warriors who've proven themselves. They're eager."

"And Grimnir found signs of deer herds to the east," Kelvin added. "He wants to organize a hunting party — mixed goblin and orc teams."

Satou thought about it. Thirteen mana currently. Recovering at the updated rate. By morning he'd have enough for five more orc namings. And a joint hunting party was exactly the kind of shared work that built trust faster than any formal agreement.

"Tell Urgak yes — namings after breakfast. Tell Grimnir to organize the hunt. It's time we stopped rationing and started building properly."

The siblings saluted — a gesture they'd picked up from the orc warriors somewhere along the way — and ran back down the hill.

Satou turned back to the construction site below. Six buildings catching the last of the evening light.

A village taking shape.

Something worth protecting.
