The next day, Robb Stark summoned his Northern and Riverlands vassals. In front of everyone, he solemnly introduced his fiancée and future Queen—Jeyne Westerling.
As Robb's voice fell, a short, stout man with a black beard angrily said, "King Stark, you say she is your future wife? Have you forgotten your marriage pact with House Frey? This is a broken oath!"
Robb said in a deep voice, "I haven't forgotten, Black Walder."
He extended a hand and tightly clasped one of Jeyne's hands, continuing, "But the fact is, I will give House Frey… a very sincere compensation."
Black Walder glared fiercely at Jeyne, who stood beside Robb. His name was Walder Frey, and he was called "Black Walder" to distinguish him from other relatives named Walder Frey.
He spoke, "The ladies of House Frey don't mind their fiancés carousing outside. If you've had your fill, I'm willing to do you the favor and deal with this trouble for you."
The dozen or so Freys behind Black Walder burst into laughter. They weren't mocking; they were happy because they had found a way to solve the problem.
"Enough!"
Robb said coldly, "This is the King's command. I do not wish to hear any more words offending my wife."
Black Walder stood up abruptly and angrily said, "Wife? Why don't we know? Without the Seven Gods' witness and blessing, this woman cannot be considered a legitimate wife."
Robb suppressed his anger and said word by word, "I will hold the wedding immediately."
Black Walder said very irritably, "King Stark, the ladies of House Frey don't mind marrying a widower either!"
Robb stared at Black Walder and said coldly, "I warned you, Walder Frey."
Black Walder glared back without backing down, and the atmosphere in the hall grew tense.
Robb's attendant, Olyvar Frey, reached out and pulled Black Walder's thick arm, but was rebuked, "Get lost! You fool!"
He turned to Robb and angrily said, "Robb Stark, this is an insult to House Frey! The Twins sent almost all their forces because of the marriage pact, and Lord Frey's heir died fighting for you!"
Robb stared at Black Walder for a moment, then waved his hand and said, "I will talk to you about this once you calm down. Olyvar, take him out first."
"Get out!" Black Walder pushed Olyvar away.
He drew the one-handed war hammer from his waist: "Westerling whore, I'm going to smash your head!"
Clang, clang, clang, clang… Robb's vassals and guards immediately drew their swords. Black Walder and the surrounding Freys were surrounded by them.
Robb's cold voice rang out: "According to law, drawing a sword in front of the King without permission is a capital offense, Black Walder."
Olyvar Frey quickly interjected, "King Robb, please forgive him…"
Olyvar's plea was roughly interrupted by Black Walder: "Robb Stark, I can give you my head, but I demand that you banish the whore by your side!"
Robb gritted his teeth and said, "Greatjon."
The tall and robust Jon Umber responded loudly, "At your command, King Robb."
"Jon Umber, in the name of the King of the North and the King of the Trident, I command you to…"
Before Robb could finish, Jeyne suddenly pulled him. She shook her head slightly and softly said, "Robb, I'm fine. Please forgive him."
Robb and Jeyne looked at each other for a moment. He paused, his blue eyes shifting to Black Walder, and said, "Jeyne's kindness saved your life. You may withdraw, Black Walder."
"This is an insult to me!"
Black Walder was not appeased. He glanced at the other Walders around him and said, "Follow me!"
With that, he grabbed Olyvar and strode out with the others.

Robb clenched his fist, his sharp gaze sweeping over his vassals, and said, "Does anyone else have an objection to my fiancée's identity?"
Wendel Manderly stepped forward. He was the second son of the Earl of White Harbor, with a round face, bald head, and a large beard, and he was extremely corpulent.
