Chapter 975 - The Checkpoint

The ascent from the ash plains of the twentieth floor demanded almost superhuman resilience from our bodies. As we surpassed the intermediate levels of this new cycle, the tower's internal architecture began to narrow drastically. The immense pocket dimensions that housed forests and deserts gave way to an imposing labyrinth of vertical corridors made of a bluish metallic ore that glowed with rhythmic pulses of pure energy.

There was no longer any artificial wind or climatic simulations; only the heavy silence of a colossal machine working at maximum capacity to contain our ascent.

With every flight of stairs we overcame, the weight of demonic mana seemed to condense around us like an invisible armor of lead. Our breathing was short and coordinated, and the need to maintain an active guard against possible ambushes by metal gargoyles demanded absolute mental focus.

However, the instant we crossed the transition portal marking the boundary of the twenty-fifth floor, all the oppressive pressure crushing our mana channels abruptly dissipated.

The environment that opened before us was a monumental chamber of cathedral-like proportions. The ceiling, infinitely high, disappeared into a mist of golden particles that floated serenely through the purified air. The floor was not made of stone or rough metal, but of perfectly aligned blocks of white rock that seemed to radiate a soft and comforting warmth into the soles of our travel boots.

At the exact center of this immaculate hall rested an immense circular structure composed of concentric rings of gold and platinum that floated and slowly rotated around a monumental translucent blue crystal.

"It is the true checkpoint," whispered Liriel's assistant, letting her research clipboard hang to the side as she observed the structure with eyes shining with scientific fascination. "The energy signature of this crystal... is identical to what the researcher adventurer described in his theoretical manuscripts. It is not merely a temporary resting point like the previous sanctuaries; it is a permanent dimensional anchoring point."

"The mana flow here is perfectly stable," commented Lyannis, approaching the edge of the circular platform and extending her hands to feel the warm breeze emanating from the rotating rings. "The influence of the tower's demonic miasma is completely nonexistent within this hall. It is as if we were in a pocket dimension protected by the very laws of energy conservation of the outside world."

I approached the control pedestal that projected from the base of the immense blue crystal. The marble surface of the pedestal displayed a circular groove whose diameter corresponded exactly to the size of the passage rune we had acquired after defeating the Silicon Colossus on the twentieth floor.

With my left hand slightly trembling due to the residual tension from the previous battles, I removed the gray stone rune from my tactical belt and positioned it over the groove.

The instant the rune touched the marble, the concentric gold and platinum rings accelerated their rotation harmoniously, emitting a low-frequency musical sound that resonated comfortingly in our chests. The central blue crystal shone with magnificent intensity, projecting a vertical beam of light that pierced through the golden mist of the ceiling and connected directly with the spatial coordinates of the outside world, establishing a stable bridge through the fabric of space.

"The communication and transportation channel is officially active," I declared, feeling the subtle vibration of the sky-blue mana in my right arm synchronize with the frequency of the mystical anchor. "From this moment on, this floor is permanently recorded in our soul registry. We can return to the Isolated Lands to resupply, and when we decide to return to the tower, this crystal will pull us directly back to this twenty-fifth floor, without the need to face the trials of the previous levels again."

A collective sigh of relief and tactical pride echoed through the monumental hall. Scarlet sat heavily on the edge of the marble platform, resting her heavy sword against the golden pillar while undoing the straps of her left gauntlet to massage her tired fingers.

"We really did it, Takumi," she said with a tired but extremely bright smile. "Twenty-five floors of pure tactical hell, gigantic monsters, and changing traps... and we overcame every single one without losing a single line of our formation."

"Our cooperation was impeccable," praised Liriel, closing her sacred prayer book with a soft sound and sitting beside Scarlet to offer her a flask of purified water. "Even when the weight of demonic mana tried to suppress my healing spells, the intelligence and agility of each of you prevented the enemy from finding any opening in our defensive lines."

While the group settled around the checkpoint to enjoy that moment of absolute peace, I walked to the edge of the circular platform and looked down into the dark abyss through which we had climbed. The feeling of victory was real, but my mind could not help delving into broader reflections about the meaning of our journey up to that point.

That colossal tower was not merely a physical challenge designed by the Demon King; it was a distorted mirror of my own origins and the childhood memories that I believed were stored only within me. By transforming those memories of dungeon games into a fortress of relentless rules, my opponent had tried to isolate me in a labyrinth of nostalgia and despair.

However, when I looked back and saw Liriel, Scarlet, Rai'kanna, and all the others sharing that triumph, I realized that the true strength of our Alliance did not lie in my individual ability to decipher the system, but in the humanity and genuine bonds that united us.

"The creator of this tower believed that the rules of the game were absolute," I thought, feeling a profound wave of warmth and conviction solidify in my heart. "He thought that by creating mathematical barriers and healing suppressions, he would force us to give up or fail because of our biological limitations. But he forgot that human intelligence is not limited to following established rules; we adapt, create new solutions, and transform difficulty itself into a catalyst for our collective evolution. We are not chess pieces on his mystical data board; we are the players who are about to rewrite the ending of this story."

"You have that look of someone planning the next ten steps of our campaign, hero," commented Rai'kanna, silently approaching with light steps across the marble floor and offering me a light travel ration.

I accepted the food with a grateful nod, allowing myself a sincere smile. "I'm just appreciating the scenery, Rai'kanna. For the first time since we entered this needle, we are not racing against time or fighting for our own survival every millisecond. This checkpoint is our first definitive strategic victory against the Demon King's system."

"And what will we do now?" asked Vespera, who had descended from one of the floating platinum rings where she had been observing the mechanical rotation of the structure. "We have the active rune and the path to the outside world is open before us. Should we continue the ascent immediately or..."

"We will return temporarily," I replied with tactical firmness, looking at the entire group that was now gathering around the control pedestal. "Our physical provisions and alchemical potions are at the limit of safe use, and our bodies need real rest beneath the true sky, far from the influence of demonic mana. Furthermore, the kings of our Alliance and the troops on the northern front need to know that the checkpoint system truly works. This information will completely change the morale of our armies on the continent."

All the members of the group agreed with firm nods. The decision to strategically retreat in order to strengthen ourselves was not a sign of weakness, but the ultimate demonstration of our tactical maturity. We knew that the true war was still far from over, but we had just planted our first flag of conquest in the heart of the enemy monument.

"Stay together around the central crystal," I instructed, positioning myself at the center of the marble platform while extending my hand to channel the return beam of light. "We will go home to prepare for the second phase of our expedition. The path to the top will be long, but we have already proven that we are capable of overcoming any rule this place tries to impose upon us."

With their hands joined and their spirits lifted by the certainty of a duty fulfilled, the squad watched as the blue crystal emitted a golden and comforting glow that gently enveloped our bodies. Within milliseconds, the colossal marble chamber of the twenty-fifth floor faded from our sight, replaced by the welcoming promise of the outside world that awaited us to celebrate our first and glorious conquest in the heart of the Demon King's Tower.
