The transition from night to dawn on the arcane ceiling of the twenty-third level occurred with flawless gradation. The small lights that imitated distant constellations gradually gave way to a soft orange hue, which soon transformed into the warm and welcoming golden glow of the early morning hours. Inside the Safe Point, the air remained warm and incredibly pleasant, completely isolated from the humidity covering the vegetation outside the runic perimeter.
The squad's awakening was marked by an atmosphere of absolute restoration. The decision to grant all my companions an uninterrupted night of sleep showed its results in the way they moved. There was not the slightest trace of muscular stiffness, nor the heavy look characteristic of someone waking up after fragmented guard shifts. Vitality and readiness were evident in every simple gesture of the group.
"The quality of rest in this runic area is simply phenomenal," Vespera commented, folding her sleeping bag with agile movements and storing it in her backpack. "I feel as if my magical energy reserve has expanded and been completely purified during the night."
"The Safe Point's passive regeneration effect, combined with the absence of interruptions during sleep, accelerated the cellular recovery of all of us by almost 40%," explained Liriel's assistant, adjusting her glasses and checking the parameter readings on her measurement panel. "The group's fatigue levels have returned to zero."
"And the aroma of breakfast is already making it clear that our day will begin flawlessly," Scarlet said with a light smile, watching Lyannis handle the iron frying pan over the portable stove.
Lyannis had prepared a hearty and extremely practical meal to begin the new journey. Using slices of good-quality dried meat, homemade barley biscuits, and small cooked tubers that we had brought preserved, she arranged balanced portions for each member of the group. To accompany them, she served cups of warm aromatic herbal tea, which helped warm the stomach and awaken the senses.
"Eat without rushing, but stay focused on organization," Lyannis instructed, distributing the portions with her usual care. "The energy from this breakfast will sustain us during the first hours of continuous marching on the next level."
I sat on the clean marble floor beside Liriel and Elara, accepting my portion and appreciating the rich flavor of the food. The atmosphere around us overflowed with a silent and profound sense of camaraderie.
"Your solitary watch tonight gave us the vigor we needed to face what lies ahead, Takumi," Liriel said in a gentle tone, looking at me with sincere gratitude. "I feel completely ready to give my best in the barriers and support spells."
"That is the role of the vanguard and of a commander," I replied firmly and calmly, taking a sip of the warm tea. "Taking care of the group's well-being during rest is just as crucial as leading the attack when the battle begins. Knowing that all of you are at your maximum capacity is my greatest guarantee of success."
After the meal ended, dismantling the camp was carried out with surgical speed. The tent was packed away, the provisions were properly secured in the cargo backpacks, and the weapons underwent one final and rigorous safety inspection. Rai'kanna adjusted the sheathes of her twin blades at her waist, while Elara tested the tension of her heavy bowstring.
"Equipment checked and backpacks secured," Scarlet reported, taking her position at my left side. "The group is 100% operational and ready to resume the march."
"Excellent," I declared, standing up and drawing my runic sword for a brief moment to check the energy flow through the blade before sheathing it again. "Let us cross the barrier's boundary and advance toward the exit of this floor."
We left the protected perimeter of the Safe Point and stepped once again onto the soft grass of the forest on the twenty-third level. The morning air carried the pleasant fragrance of the silver-trunked trees. We walked in a steady marching formation for about twenty minutes, going around the rocky elevations until we reached the end of the great wooded gallery.
Ahead of us, embedded in the mountain rock, stood the monumental passage leading to the twenty-fourth floor: an immense gray stone portal without door panels, whose frame was covered with vines bearing dark leaves. From inside that opening, it was possible to perceive a subtle but undeniable change in the quality of the air and the ambient pressure.
As we crossed the threshold of the portal and began ascending the staircase leading to the next level, the serene atmosphere of the previous biome gradually began to dissipate. The air became denser, slightly stifling, and filled with a distinct aroma of mold, packed earth, and a visibly heavier arcane vibration. The welcoming silence that had accompanied us at the Safe Point gave way to a distant and continuous echo, composed of small cracks of rock and the muffled sound of movement in the shadows.
As we stepped onto the floor of the twenty-fourth level, the scenery revealed a drastic change in the tower's geography. We were leaving behind the open and sunlit forests to enter a vast network of rocky ravines and narrow corridors of dark stone. The ceiling of the floor was significantly lower, illuminated only by veins of greenish luminescent ore cutting through the rock walls, creating dense and angular shadows at every turn of the terrain.
"The density of magical energy on this level has increased considerably," Liriel's assistant reported, pointing her arcane compass toward the rocky walls. "The frequency of the environment is hostile, and the amount of free mana in the air is saturated. This usually attracts and strengthens monsters of an aggressive nature."
"Visibility is limited, and the sharp curves of these corridors create countless blind spots," Scarlet observed, slightly lowering her center of gravity while keeping her hand on the hilt of her longsword. "The terrain favors short-range ambushes."
"Rai'kanna, Elara, keep extra attention on the elevated points of the walls," I ordered, taking the direct vanguard with my runic sword drawn. "From this point onward, the presence of common creatures and organized hordes will be exponentially greater. There is no room for dispersal."
"The smell of beasts is very strong here," Rai'kanna warned, wrinkling her nose and touching the hilt of her twin blades. "There are multiple groups moving through the upper passages of the ravine. They know we are in their territory."
"Let them come," Elara said, drawing an arrow from the quiver and placing it on the bowstring with absolute calm. "Our shots are sharper than ever."
As I led the squad through the first meters of that dark and rocky corridor, I allowed a calm and focused reflection to organize my mind. The transition from an environment of absolute peace, such as the Safe Point, to a territory saturated with threats is the moment when a group's discipline is truly put to the test. It is easy to maintain control when the surroundings are favorable and the air is light, but the mark of an elite Alliance lies in its ability to carry inner serenity into the chaos of battle. The perfect rest we had the previous night did not merely heal the body's fatigue, but also shielded our spirit. No matter how dark and narrow the corridors of the twenty-fourth floor were, the light of our cohesion and our focus on strategy remained unshakable.
"Fast movement ahead!" Rai'kanna warned, pointing toward the bend in the ravine fifty meters ahead.
Two groups of quadrupedal creatures with rocky bodies and sharp teeth emerged from the shadows of the wall, emitting guttural growls and advancing toward us in a coordinated charge.
"Containment formation and continuous advance!" I ordered in a firm and calm voice, stepping three paces ahead of Scarlet with my runic sword glowing silver. "We will clear the path without interrupting our march. The twenty-fourth floor has begun!"
With the squad completely revitalized, focused, and aligned with its tactical doctrine, we faced the first horde of that new level, beginning the crossing with absolute confidence in our strength.
