The initial charge of the rock beasts against our vanguard was merely the prelude to the true trial that the twenty-fourth level had in store. As we advanced through the narrow gorge of the canyon, the hostile ecosystem of the floor revealed its most aggressive nature. The dark rock corridors, cut through by greenish veins of luminescent ore, seemed to funnel the passage into strategic bottlenecks, turning every sharp bend into a perfect point for massive assaults by native monsters.
The pressure did not let up. Unlike the forest floors, where the broad vegetation allowed for evasive maneuvers and dispersion, the rugged terrain of the twenty-fourth level forced us to maintain an extremely compact and disciplined formation. During three uninterrupted hours of continuous marching, the metallic sound of blades colliding against rigid carcasses, the sharp whistle of arrows cutting through the dense air, and the cracks of containment spells became the only rhythm of our march.
"Third pack of basalt gargoyles launching themselves from the upper right wall!" Rai'kanna warned, spinning on her own axis and intercepting the descent of the first creature with a double slash from her blades at the base of the beast's neck.
"Vanguard, cover the left!" I ordered in a firm and calm voice, taking two steps forward and swinging the runic sword in an upward arc. The sacred blade, bathed in a silver aura, pierced through the stone protection of the monster attempting to flank our position, reducing it to a cloud of arcane dust before it even touched the ground.
Scarlet positioned herself shoulder to shoulder with me, delivering a deep horizontal strike with her longsword against two creatures advancing along the ground. The tempered steel blade shattered the targets' ore protections in a shower of incandescent sparks, while Lyannis, keeping the rear completely protected, brought down the heavy head of her battle axe against the last aggressor attempting to close our escape route.
"The respawn frequency of these hordes is three times faster than that of the previous levels," reported Liriel's assistant, maintaining a steady pace in the center of the formation while taking notes with a firm hand despite the cold sweat running down her forehead. "The core of this floor is draining mana from the environment to multiply the containment units in the narrow corridors."
"That explains the continuous physical strain," Elara commented, drawing another arrow from her quiver and firing without even hesitating, striking the eye of a creature watching the group from the top of a rocky ridge. "There is no room for pauses between one battle and another."
After that group was neutralized, the march continued through another winding section of the canyon. The combination of the humid, stuffy air, the metallic smell of ore, and the constant physical demand was beginning to take its toll, even on a perfectly trained and rested team. Although the previous night's sleep had restored our biological vitality, the prolonged effort of three hours of incessant engagements caused sweat to run down the faces of the squad, requiring their breathing to be strictly controlled with every step.
Liriel kept the gem of her sacred staff emitting a continuous flow of low-intensity purifying light, sufficient to relieve the sensation of heaviness in the chest caused by the floor's saturated air. Vespera used subtle gusts of wind to circulate the air through the stuffiest sections of the cave, allowing the group to maintain stable pulmonary ventilation.
"Physical exhaustion is inevitable under this kind of pressure," Scarlet observed, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her leather glove without slowing her steps, "but our posture has not yielded a single inch. The vanguard line remains completely solid."
"And the rear guard will remain unshaken until the end of this route," Lyannis stated, adjusting her grip on the handle of her axe with an expression of unbreakable determination.
Faced with the visible strain that the continuous crossing was imposing on the group, I allowed a focused and calm thought to organize my tactical reasoning. The true trial of an elite squad does not lie in executing a perfect plan under ideal conditions, but in the ability to maintain emotional control and motor discipline when physical exhaustion attempts to cloud the mind. The twenty-fourth floor had been designed to erode explorers' patience, using oppressive terrain and endless waves of common enemies to induce the group into making simple mistakes through fatigue. When the muscles grow heavy and breathing accelerates, what keeps the Alliance cohesive is not the absence of fatigue, but blind confidence in the efficiency of the planning and in the unconditional presence of the companion beside them. Mastering exhaustion before it masters the strategy is the true turning point in the tower's ascent.
"Maintain a steady breathing rhythm and keep your focus on the signs of the terrain," I declared, looking back for a brief second and meeting the firm gazes of each of my companions. "We are in the final stage of this canyon. The density of vegetation beginning to appear in the cracks of the rock indicates that the exit is near."
"He's right," Rai'kanna confirmed, sniffing the air coming from the bend ahead. "The stuffy smell of ore is fading. There is a cleaner current of air coming from that monumental opening."
We advanced through the final three hundred meters of the rocky gorge, overcoming one last attempt at a blockade by a smaller group of basalt monsters. With clean dodges and strikes from Scarlet and me, we dismantled the attackers' final defense within seconds.
As we crossed the last sharp bend of the canyon, the rocky wall opened majestically, revealing the end of the twenty-fourth floor. Before us, embedded in the mountain rock and illuminated by a beam of clear light descending from a high ceiling, stood a monumental staircase of carved stone. The wide and imposing steps rose in a perfectly straight line toward the platform of the twenty-fifth level.
"We've reached the staircase to the twenty-fifth floor!" Liriel's assistant announced, taking a deep, relieved breath as she recorded the arrival milestone in the report. "Exactly three hours of combat and navigation since leaving the Safe Point."
"The trial of the twenty-fourth floor has been overcome with absolute success," Liriel declared, firmly resting her staff against the first stone step and smiling proudly at the group.
"Excellent work, everyone," I praised, sheathing my runic sword and observing the upright and proud posture of each member of the squad. "Even under the strain of uninterrupted combat, none of you hesitated. Regroup the formation, take a sip of pure water, and begin climbing the steps. The twenty-fifth floor awaits us."
With morale intact, physical exhaustion properly controlled, and determination renewed by overcoming the canyon, our squad took its first steps onto the monumental staircase, advancing firmly toward the supreme challenge of the twenty-fifth level of the tower.
