Chapter 1011 - Endless Horde

The transition through the immense solid stone door revealed a drastic change in the topography and atmosphere of the twenty-ninth floor, replacing the suffocating humidity of the underground lakes with wide corridors carved into dark, striated volcanic rock. As soon as we crossed the threshold, the mana density around us rose noticeably, emitting a subtle hum in the air that seemed to vibrate directly against our skin and accelerate the rhythm of our heartbeats. Maintaining the strict chain formation — with Scarlet in the absolute vanguard, followed by Liriel's assistant, Rai'kanna, Elara, Vespera, Lyannis, Liriel, and me closing the rear — we advanced with firm and measured steps through the galleries stretching out before us. Our accumulated experience had taught us that floors characterized by such a high concentration of pure arcane energy never came without monumental dangers, requiring all our senses to remain permanently sharpened from the very first second of exploration.

It did not take long for our prediction to be confirmed in the most intense way possible. After walking for about twenty minutes without encountering any obstacles, the distant sound of heavy footsteps and guttural growls began to echo through the rocky walls, reverberating from multiple directions at the same time. The noise quickly grew until it transformed into a deafening rumble, similar to an avalanche collapsing down a slope. Before we had time to reorganize our defensive positioning on more open terrain, a colossal horde of humanoid creatures with chitinous carapaces and crimson eyes burst from three converging side tunnels, completely surrounding our group in a fraction of a second. They were beings known as deep scavengers, thick-shelled monsters with disproportionate arms ending in curved claws, famous for attacking in continuous and exhausting waves to wear down the physical resistance of their opponents.

"Immediate defensive wall formation!" I ordered in a firm voice, drawing my sword in a swift movement that cut through the air with a silver gleam. "Don't let them break our center!"

The squad's response was executed with surgical precision that defied the brutality of the enemy siege. Scarlet stepped forward, planting her feet firmly on the volcanic rock floor and delivering a devastating horizontal strike with her enchanted daggers, severing the claws of the first scavenger that attempted to leap over the vanguard. Right behind her, Liriel's assistant conjured a burst of compressed wind that pushed back half a dozen creatures coming from the left flank, while Rai'kanna swung her short spear in a devastating rotating arc, opening a vital space within the mass of monsters pressing against us from the front.

While the front line sustained the initial impact with unwavering bravery, the group's magical core sprang into action with impressive synchronization. Elara and Vespera cast combined fire and lightning spells that illuminated the dark corridor with intense flashes, incinerating dozens of scavengers before they could reach our rear. Lyannis raised a translucent barrier of protective energy around Liriel and herself, ensuring that support and vigor-enhancement spells could be chanted without unwanted interruptions. From my position at the rear, I channeled a controlled fraction of my internal energy through the sword's hilt, advancing with determined steps to intercept the monsters attempting to flank the group from behind, neutralizing each threat with clean and definitive strikes.

The battle transformed into a relentless succession of shockwaves, metal clashing against hard carapaces and magical lightning crackling through the stifling air. The flow of monsters seemed truly endless; every defeated creature gave way to two new beasts emerging from the shadows of the side tunnels with blind ferocity. With every repelled assault, physical exhaustion began to weigh on our muscles, testing the limits of our accumulated endurance after weeks of exploration in the dungeon. I allowed a calm and focused thought to cross my mind amid the roar of battle: the true strength of an elite group is not measured by the absence of exhaustion, but by the ability to maintain tactical discipline and surgical precision when physical effort reaches its absolute limit.

The battle lasted for more than forty minutes of uninterrupted confrontation, accumulating approximately sixty consecutive kills credited to the impeccable coordination of our squad. Seeing that the horde was beginning to show signs of exhaustion and that the volume of monsters was considerably decreasing in the side passages, I delivered one final circular strike with the energized blade, creating a shockwave that swept away the remaining enemies and completely cleared the corridor. A heavy silence, punctuated only by our labored breathing, instantly settled over the environment, which now lay covered in shining particles left behind by the defeated monsters.

"Is everyone all right? Did anyone suffer any serious injuries?" I asked immediately, sheathing my sword and scanning the group to check the condition of each companion.

"Just a little lost breath and armor covered in volcanic dust, but not a single serious scratch thanks to the perfect support from our mages," Scarlet replied with a confident smile, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her gloved hand.

"The physical wear was considerable, but mana control remained stable throughout the entire confrontation," Liriel added, adjusting her cloak and approaching with an expression of deep pride in her eyes. "This horde was designed to exhaust us psychologically, but our unity once again proved to be impenetrable."

With the area temporarily safe, we soon spotted a natural stone alcove ahead that offered excellent protection from the sides, ideal for setting up camp and recovering properly. With the help of the dry firewood stored in the magic bag and a warming spell cast by Lyannis, we lit a welcoming campfire whose flames dispelled the freezing humidity of the volcanic rocks. We sat around the fire to consume hot broths, fresh bread, and slices of meat perfectly preserved by the temporal stasis of our spatial artifact, recovering the vital energy necessary before surrendering ourselves to the deep rest that the tower's simulated night demanded.
