The dawn simulated by the crystals on the ceiling broke through the dimness of the alcove where we had spent the night, dissipating the orange reflections of the embers that were slowly dying in the campfire. The rest had been deeply restorative, returning the vigor necessary to our muscles after the violent confrontation against the endless horde of scavengers the previous day. We dismantled the camp with our usual agility, checked the flawless condition of the provisions in the magic bag, and reorganized our strict marching formation, with Scarlet leading the vanguard, followed by Liriel's assistant, Rai'kanna, Elara, Vespera, Lyannis, Liriel, and me closing the rear. As soon as we set foot once again in the volcanic rock corridors, we noticed that the terrain around us was undergoing a radical transformation, replacing the dark and dry walls with dense, lush, and mysterious underground vegetation that stretched across colossal expanses.
We were entering the most complex and labyrinthine section of the twenty-ninth floor, a vast underground ecosystem composed of dense forests of gigantic fungi, luminous vines that emitted a greenish glow, and silver-barked trees whose thick canopies completely blocked the view above. The density of the air changed instantly, becoming humid, rich in oxygen, and permeated by an earthy aroma reminiscent of the interior of a tropical jungle untouched by time. The greatest challenge of that sector did not lie solely in the brute strength of the monsters inhabiting the vegetation, but in the confusing architecture of the paths that crossed and divided into dozens of parallel routes, forming a true natural labyrinth deliberately designed to disorient any reckless group of adventurers.
"The terrain here is highly treacherous," Elara observed, crouching slightly to examine the ground covered in bioluminescent moss before raising her gaze toward the branches of the trees ahead. "The dense vegetation walls block the proper propagation of echoes and absorb part of our tracking magic, which means we will have to rely much more on visual orientation and marching instinct than on conventional arcane compasses."
"This makes things much more fun than walking through monotonous stone corridors," Rai'kanna commented with an open and relaxed smile, lightly swinging the short spear in her hands as she walked around the thick trunk of a colossal fungus. "I would much rather hunt monsters in the middle of a jungle than keep guessing where each fork in a closed dungeon leads. At least we have room for me to move around here."
"The enthusiasm is admirable, Rai'kanna, but overconfidence in a living labyrinth is usually the fastest shortcut to disaster," Liriel pondered in a gentle tone of voice, although her eyes remained completely focused on the mana readings she was receiving through her staff. "Maintaining the group's cohesion and the strict distance between us is the only guarantee that we will not be separated if some creature decides to ambush us from behind the vegetation."
As we advanced along the winding paths of the underground forest, the feeling of being watched became increasingly tangible. The apparent calm of the jungle was merely a disguise for the stealthy presence of predators adapted to perfect camouflage among the leaves and gleaming trunks. I allowed a serene and reflective thought to occupy my mind for a few moments. Leadership in the depths of a natural labyrinth required a delicate balance between analytical patience and absolute readiness for combat, because the jungle forgives neither haste nor carelessness. Every ancient tree and every bush swaying with invisible air currents reminded me that the squad's survival depended on every decision made within fractions of a second.
After three consecutive days wandering through the labyrinthine passages, facing dozens of skirmishes against wild beasts and gigantic carnivorous plants that attempted to entangle us with their thorny tentacles, we began to notice significant changes in the mana density around us. The greenish glow of the vines became more intense, converging toward the center of an immense circular clearing surrounded by natural walls of petrified trunks. We immediately understood that we had finally located the core of that sector, the sanctuary where the floor boss awaited to protect the access portal to the next level of the tower.
"We've reached the lair," I announced quietly, making a discreet gesture with my hand for everyone to stop immediately and adopt a semicircular combat formation around the entrance to the clearing. "Let's advance with extreme caution and assess the opponent before launching our first coordinated attack."
As soon as we passed through the curtain of thick vines isolating the central area, the colossal creature revealed itself in all its monstrous grandeur. It was a gigantic arboreal guardian, a living golem made of ancient wood and moss-covered stone standing more than six meters tall, whose eyes glowed with a threatening greenish hue. Its massive arms resembled centuries-old trunks ending in claws of intertwined roots, while its body exuded poisonous spores that slightly clouded the air around it.
The colossus emitted a deep rumble that shook the leaves of the trees and advanced awkwardly, but with surprising speed for its size, delivering a double strike with its wooden fists directly toward our position.
"Lateral breakthrough formation!" I ordered in a firm voice, jumping to the left while channeling energy into my sword.
The squad's coordinated response was impeccable. Scarlet and Liriel's assistant agilely dodged to the sides, opening space for Rai'kanna and Elara to unleash combined spells of pure fire against the monster's rooted legs. The flames instantly engulfed the golem's base, producing loud cracks and shattering part of the dry wood supporting it. Vespera and Lyannis conjured wind barriers to contain the cloud of poisonous spores the creature was attempting to expel, ensuring that the air around us remained breathable and safe for everyone.
Taking advantage of the arboreal guardian's momentary instability, I advanced like lightning through the debris, infusing my sword's blade with a maximum charge of internal energy. I spun my body in a perfect arc and delivered a devastating vertical blow that cut through the monster's main trunk from top to bottom with absolute ease. The golem instantly froze, its arms raised in the air, before shattering into thousands of incandescent splinters that dissipated across the grass of the clearing. With a dry thud, the floor's ornate key fell onto the grass, bringing another stage of our glorious journey toward the top to a triumphant end.
