Chapter 86 - Training Under Shadows

Dawn came too quickly.

I stood at the mountain's edge, watching the first light paint the Direwilds in shades of gold and crimson, and tried not to think about how those colors matched the blood I'd scrubbed from my hands last night.

"Stop thinking." Ronan's voice cut through the morning cold. "Thinking won't help you today."

I turned to find him already in fighting stance, his massive frame silhouetted against the rising sun. No armor. No weapons. Just scarred skin and golden eyes that promised pain.

"What am I supposed to do if not think?"

"Feel." He gestured toward the ancient pine beside us—easily three hundred years old, trunk thick as a man was tall. "Hit it."

I blinked. "Hit the tree?"

"That's what I said."

"Father, I'll—"

"Hit. The. Tree." Each word came out deliberate, commanding. "Full strength. Don't hold back."

Every instinct screamed against it. I'd seen what my full strength did to vampire skulls, to necks, to rib cages. A tree wouldn't stand a chance.
