Chapter 87 - Lessons of Restraint

LUCIAN POV

The meditation caves existed in a part of the Direwilds even the boldest wolves avoided.

I understood why the moment we arrived.

The air itself felt wrong—too thin, too cold, pressing against my lungs like a physical weight. Ancient ice clung to the cave mouths, formations that had never melted even in the height of summer. And beneath it all, a sensation I couldn't name. Something that made my wolf want to tuck tail and run.

"This place," Ronan said, his voice echoing off frozen stone, "is where Direwolves come to break themselves."

I pulled my gaze from the nearest cave, its entrance a gaping maw of shadow and frost. "Break themselves?"

"To rebuild stronger." He moved past me, boots crunching on permafrost that never thawed. "When a Direwolf's rage threatens to consume them, when their wolf fights too hard for dominance, they come here. Meditate through pain until they remember how to be still."

"I don't understand. What does pain have to—"
