Chapter 4 - [Horror#4] Wailing windows

The floor creaked continuously as Adam moved forward, snapping his head left and right to look for any abnormalities. His teeth clattered, and low mumbles came from his mouth.

'Damn! Damn! This place seriously gives me the creeps.'

Jostling along the way, he kept rubbing his arms to keep them a little warm. Passing in front of a few rooms, he noticed an unusually modest room ahead, with another corridor extending to his left. That probably led to another corner that circled back to the room from which he came.

Getting a little closer to the room, he noted that halfway through the corridor to his left, there was a stairway descending downstairs.

"Finally!"

As his words echoed through the hallway, he quietened and looked back at the modest door in front of him and entered through to the other side.

Flashing some light around, he saw a decimated bathroom alongside a giant bathtub on the right, with a bathing cubicle just next to it made of half-transparent glass.

There was a wardrobe in front of him and a toilet to his left.

Opening the wardrobe, there were a few dirty, but dry bathrobes inside.

"These will have to do."

Saying so, he draped three of them on top of his clothes. The sight looked a bit humorous, as when he was wearing the second one, he almost tripped and fell while stretching his arms.

Looking down, there was a faint layer of water where he stepped.

Peering to his right, he went towards the cubicle and tried turning the shower's knob on, but there wasn't a single drop of water.

'Sigh... Well, nothing ever goes as planned... at least I got something to keep me warm.'

Turning around and walking back out of the bathroom, he looked around and went towards the stairway.

Walking while checking out the rooms in sight, he reached the stairs and faced the stairs going up.

"The storeroom can be either on the top floor or downstairs... Hmm... let's just get down before I start hearing stuff again."

'If it's not downstairs... well fu*k it then, I'll just hide in some closet, no need for a weapon if nothing can find me.'

Stepping down the stairs, just as he was going to take his second step, he heard a faint high-pitched sound coming from the room next to the stairway.

Feeling something stuck in his mouth, he gulped silently. Crouching down and covering the mobile's flash, he stepped towards the room with sneaky steps.

The door was open, and faint winds were blowing from inside. He squinted his eyes and took a peek inside the room.

The room was lightly illuminated by the moonlight, and a window was creaking while the wind continued blowing inside.

Relaxing his tense body, he stood up and moved towards the window and saw the window screeching while flailing with the wind.

Adam gently pushed the window close, and the sound stopped.

'Motherf*cker!'

Huffing out his held breath, his brows wrinkled in displeasure, and a scowling expression crossed his face.

"I hope someone pisses on the grave of the owner of this place."

Stopping himself from cursing this place more, he turned back and walked out of the room and moved to the stairway.

Walking down, he reached the ground floor and saw a dilapidated courtyard with dense wild shrubs dotting the entire place in front of him.

Adam had a clear view of the entire building when he walked past the corridor and stepped into the courtyard.

The place was undoubtedly beautiful, with the mansion exuding a noble feel to it, although some of it was lowered due to the wear and tear that could be seen on the walls and the climbers curving their way through the cracks in the walls.

That made the place truly look like a horror mansion.

'heh... I just had to jinx it.'

While thinking in his head, he had a wry smile on his lips.

"Well... I need to stay safe till daytime and then find my way out of the forest... it wouldn't be that bad, would it?"

Grimacing, he tried forgetting that train of thought.

"Anyways... let's look around."

Adam walked back to the hallway, although it couldn't be called that anymore because of there being no walls to the right, instead only pillars supporting the upper floors.

On his left, there were rooms, just like the upper floor, with worn-out doors. The rooms stretched in a rectangle around the courtyard and joined back at the stairs.

After checking out some of the rooms, while finding nothing unusual other than more ruined stuff, he pondered silently.

'I just saw an entrance in the front, but one of the huge a*s double-door is broken and jammed into the other right next to it... It'd be hard to move it.'

Frowning at that thought, he continued thinking.

'There must be a back door opposite to where I came from, and from the looks of it, the storage isn't down here.'

Walking out of another room, he stepped closer to the tangled shrubs and looked at the moon; milky clouds were moving slowly but silently through the night sky.

Just then, his gaze fell on a window he'd just passed through when he stepped out of the room he woke from.

There seemed to be slight murkiness to the window pane from the looks of it.

As far as he remembered, the glass was old but clear enough to see through to the other side.

Just then, the murkiness in the window moved, and there seemed to be a slight patch of darkness moving forward towards it from the opposite side. It stopped moving when it was just about to touch it.

Adam was startled, but he didn't make any sudden movements. Gently tiptoing to the edges of a pillar, he hid behind it.

He had already closed the flash a few minutes ago when he reached the courtyard, and the moonlight was bright enough to look around.

Pointing the still recording camera towards the window by peeking from the corner of the pillar, he zoomed in on the image and saw the two blurs clearly in the camera.

They seemed to be flickering like fog at the edges. After a couple of seconds, he could clearly see that they had the faint outline of heads, more accurately, he just saw the heads of... whatever those things were.

His pupils dilated, and cold sweat matted his back instantly. He had to bite down on his tongue to not let out any sound.

Adam's heart was beating violently, and everything seemed to have slowed down.

Earlier, when he was upstairs, it could've been just him being paranoid or hallucinating, but... this time, there was nothing of the sort going on.

Remembering the earlier scenes, a chill shot down his spine, and he shivered akin to a drowned cat.

'Fu*k! Fu*k! That sh*t earlier wasn't my brain doing tricks.'
