A long, heavy pause hung in the air.
Then, a low voice finally came through the line. "Okay."
Rhett glanced toward the closed door of the study, where Elise waited on the other side.
He let out a slow, controlled breath. "I'll send the driver for you tomorrow morning."
Kelsey was caught off guard. She hadn't expected him to agree so easily.
Just as she was about to say something, another voice, feminine, clear.. filtered through the phone from Rhett's end.
He paused, then spoke to Kelsey again, as if answering a question she hadn't asked. "I'm still at the old house. What's the matter?"
But before Kelsey could process that, the feminine voice grew louder, accompanied by a soft knock and the sound of a door opening.
"Rhett? My parents only arranged one guest room for us…"
Elise's voice, bright and unmistakable, traveled perfectly down the line and straight into Kelsey's ear.
The next second, the call went dead.
