Elise was struggling to control the storm of emotions inside her.
She thought that sleeping in a room together would be a good starting point. She hadn't expected any real progress with Rhett tonight.
And this man wouldn't even share a bed with her.
Elise didn't move.
Rhett paid her no attention, simply closing his eyes as if to sleep.
Elise stood beside the couch for a long, long time, just looking down at him.
In that moment, an infinite, crushing sense of grievance welled up in her heart, threatening to drown her.
She spoke, her voice rough with unshed tears. "Rhett," she whispered, "is it impossible for us... to ever go back to the way we were?"
This was the second time she'd asked him this question.
Rhett didn't open his eyes.
His voice was as low and detached as ever. "We were always like this before, Elise. You're the one who forgot."
His answer hadn't changed. Not one bit.
Elise closed her eyes. A single, hot tear traced a path down her cheek.
