I pushed the half-eaten food around my plate for a while before finally setting the fork down. The house was quiet again, that kind of silence that presses down on your chest until you can barely breathe. Milo stood a few feet away, pretending not to watch me, but I could feel his eyes tracking my every movement.
"I'm done," I said softly, pushing the chair back. "I think I will just go lie down."
He gave a small nod. "Miss Reyes…"
I stopped halfway to the stairs and turned toward him. His jaw qas stil tight, like he was forcing the words out.
"I thought we were starting to build some trust," he said. "After what happened… I thought maybe you would see I am not the enemy. And then you ran." His voice dropped lower. "You made me look like a fool in front of him, something that has never happened."
