Blanche's POV
Lucia's voice carried a sharp edge, and I rushed to clarify, "No, Lucia, that's not what I meant."
Lucia quickly picked up on my shy nature and found the perfect excuse. "You saved my life at that bridge, so tonight, I'm making dinner for you at my house. Think of it as my way of saying thanks."
I let out a breath and nodded, "Okay then."
When I agreed, Lucia gently wrapped her fingers around my cold hand. "Come on, get in the car."
I walked around to the passenger side and slipped in.
Lucia took the driver's seat, but she was crawling along at maybe thirty or forty mph.
The road stretched ahead perfectly straight and clear, with an eighty mph speed limit, yet Lucia drove like she was navigating a school zone.
Lucia wasn't some inexperienced driver—she'd been behind the wheel for almost as long as I'd been breathing.
Tonight though, something seemed wrong with her.
