When Amara and I got to the police station, we explained our purpose to the officers and were told to wait.
About ten minutes later, a female officer walked us out of the building.
We climbed into a patrol car that drove us to the detention facility.
Marquis was already locked up, though his trial hadn't started yet.
He'd requested to see Amara, and it wasn't hard to guess what he wanted to discuss.
Still, Amara had agreed to come.
I knew Amara too well—she needed this final meeting with Marquis.
That's exactly why I came along today.
The female officer guided us directly into the detention center.
The moment we entered, I stayed by Amara's side as we went to see Marquis.
Just a few days had passed, but the man who'd once carried himself with such arrogant confidence now sported scraggly facial hair and bloodshot, exhausted eyes.
