Chapter 7 - shadows after spotlight

Scene: School Entry

Zara and Zayan entered the school.

Zoya:

"I don't want to go to school yet. I thought we'd go for an outing, enjoying our vacation but time flies really fast.

Zara:

Girl it's because of your injury. Otherwise we will go anywhere.

Zoya: yeah, yeah. By the way, it's not because of me. It's all done by that blind wali shah.

Meanwhile Zoya notices wali with burns on his face.

Zoya to Zara : what is happening with his face?

Zara : Who?

Zoya : wali, look at him. It's like he was beaten by someone.

Zara:

"Who cares? He must've been messing with someone again.

Meanwhile, Zayan and Wali are standing in the corner and he notices that girls are talking about him.

Wali (calling out):

"Zayan!"

Zayan:

"Hmm?"

Wali :

"Do I look more handsome today?"

Zayan look at his face and said : Nope

Wali :

"You're just jealous. Look around—see how all the girls' eyes are locked on me? Especially Zoya and Zara. Look, they're talking about me. I think Zara has feelings for me again."

Zayan (muttering):

"How can someone be so self-obsessed?"

Wali :

"Let me go talk to them."

Zayan : ok but if girls punch you in return then don't call me.

Wali : shut up. and watch how I handle them.

He walked off confidently.

Zayan: You can't change.

Wali :"Hey girls, were you talking about me?"

Zoya:"Why? Are you some kind of superstar?"

Zara let out a small laugh.

Wali stepped closer to Zoya, his tone playful.

Wali :

"I'm not a superstar, but I already live in many people's hearts."

He then pointed toward Zara.

Wali :

"Am I right, Zara?"

Zara (ignoring him):

"Zoya, let's go. Class is about to start."

Wali gently stopped Zoya.

Wali :

"You should go. I need to talk to with zoya "

Zara looked at Zoya.

Zoya:

"Zara, you go. I'm coming."

Zara left silently.

---

Wali (softly):

"Zoya… I just wanted to say thank you."

Zoya (folds arms):

"For what?"

Wali :

"Don't act like you don't know. My lawyer told me how you defended me in front of the police officers. Instead of blaming me, you said I wasn't the one who hit you."

Zoya:

"I didn't say I forgave you."

Wali (nods):

"I know. But still… thanks for not turning your back completely."

There was a pause.

Zoya:

"Why are you always like this, Wail? You act all tough in front of others, but then suddenly you say things like this?"

Wali (shrugs, smirking):

"Because being real is scarier than acting like an idiot."

Zoya:

"Well, you're doing a great job at both."

They both laughed—just a little.

A bell rang in the distance.

Zoya:

"I should go."

Wali (quietly):

"Zoya… I'm really glad you're okay."

Zoya gave him one long look—something between curiosity and confusion.

Zoya:

"See you around, Wail."

She walked off. Wail stood still, watching her disappear into the hallway.

Scene _ From class room

Everyone was sitting in the classroom.

Teacher:

"Okay class, how was your vacation? Did you all enjoy it?"

Students (in unison):

"Yes, ma'am!"

Teacher:

"Great. So let's get started with today's lesson."

While the teacher began teaching, the students quietly began whispering to each other.

Ahmed (leaning toward Wail):

"Wail, what happened to your face?"

Wail:

"Nothing. Just a small accident."

Ahmed (smirking):

"Really? Looks more like someone beat you up."

Wail (grinning):

"Oh really? Sounds like you're speaking from personal experience."

Ahmed:

"Yeah, I am. Happened when I met my girlfriend."

Zayan (teasing):

"You? A girlfriend? With that face?"

Wail chuckled.

Wail:

"Bro just roasted you, Ahmed."

Ahmed (defensive):

"Hey! I had a girlfriend. But she left me."

Zayan:

"Why?"

Ahmed:

"When me and my girl went to Kuruçeşme Park, it was such a beautiful day. We sipped tea and sat near the water... it was all perfect—until my father showed up. He caught us, and then he beat me so badly I saw stars in daylight."

Wail and Zayan burst into loud laughter.

Wail (teasing):

"Bro, your love story turned into an action movie!"

Zayan:

"Next time, pick a park where your dad doesn't randomly appear like a villain!"

(Teacher notices them laughing loudly.)

Teacher (firmly):

"What's going on back there? Wail, Zayan, Ahmed — stand up!"

Teacher (looking at Wail):

"Wail, did I crack a joke in class?"

Wail (trying not to laugh):

"No ma'am… but Ahmed was just telling us about his tragic love story."

Teacher (confused):

"Excuse me, what?"

Ahmed (panicking):

"No, no! I mean… I was just asking Wail about his face. You should ask Zayan!"

Zayan (caught off guard):

"Me?!"

Teacher (stern):

"Enough! Zayan, go sit with Zara. Ahmed, sit with Sara. And Wail… you sit alone."

Sara (protesting):

"But ma'am, why me? I should sit with Wail!"

(Ahmed walks over confidently and sits beside Sara.)

Ahmed (grinning):

"Well, now I'm here. If you have a problem, feel free to switch seats."

(Bell rings)

Teacher (smirking):

"You three wasted half my class… but don't worry, I have the next period here too."

Scene: Festival Announcement

Everyone was busy whispering and joking with one another.

Ahmed: Sara, do you know what happened to Wali 's face?

Sara: You should ask him.

Ahmed: I did, but he just made up some story. I thought maybe you knew.

Sara: I don't. He doesn't talk to me anymore.

Ahmed: Ohhh, that's okay. You know him—he's always like that.

Sara gave him a soft smile.

Sara: He's not.

She moved away to join her friends.

Zara glanced at Wali , her eyes locking briefly on the bruises on his face.

Zara (to herself): Stop it, Zara. Wali means nothing to you now. Did you forget how he broke your heart?

Zayan noticed her staring.

Zayan (to himself): How beautiful she is. She hasn't changed a bit. She's still the same girl I met in primary school, back in London... when everything was different.

Suddenly, the class monitor burst into the room, full of excitement.

Monitor: Guys! Guys! I have exciting news for all of you!

Wali : What? Did you finally leave the school?

Everyone laughed.

Monitor: Not even in your dreams, Mr. Wali Shah.

Ahmed: Ignore him. Just tell us—do we get to go on a trip? Like to the hills or something?

Zoya: Yeah, like last time. Ahmed, you started vomiting like a pregnant woman!

Everyone burst into laughter.

Monitor (laughing): Nice one, Zoya! Anyway, the Culture and Art Festival is happening this week! If you want to participate, give me your name.

Zayan: What's that?

Wali : A holiday for me and you—we'll escape and go somewhere beautiful. You still haven't explored Istanbul properly.

Monitor: It's not a holiday, genius. It's a festival where students perform in drama, dance, and other activities. We all enjoy it a lot. Like last year—it was a blast!

Student 1: Yeah! Especially because Ali and Wail made everything so lively.

Wali 's expression changed. The mention of Ali stung. Quietly, he stood up.

Wali : I'm starving.

He walked out of the room.

Monitor: Alright, everyone—you have until tomorrow to decide and give me your names.

Zayan quietly got up and followed his brother.

Scene: Zayan and Zara – Old Ties, Silent Questions

Zayan noticed Zara sitting alone on the staircase. He walked over, a little hesitant.

Zayan: "Hey... if you don't mind, can I sit here?"

Zara: "Hmm... sure."

Zayan sat beside her, glancing sideways. There was a pause. He wanted to say something—anything—but the words just wouldn't come.

Zayan: "Zara?"

Zara: "Yeah?"

Zayan: "What do you think about… us?"

Zara looked at him, confused.

Zayan: "I mean the festival."

Zara: "Oh… I'm not interested."

Zayan (playfully): "Wait, why are you acting like Wail now? He said the same. Are you two planning a trip to the mountains together or something?"

Zara gave him a dead stare.

Zayan: "Okay—sorry. I just wanted to keep the conversation going."

Zara (calmly): "It's okay. Did you register?"

Zayan: "Yeah, I want to... but honestly, without you, it feels boring."

Zara gave a small smile and quietly walked away.

Zayan (to himself, frustrated): "What did I just say? She probably thinks I'm a complete idiot."

---

Scene: Afternoon in the Living Room

Zoya, Zara, and Ayesha are sitting together. Sunlight filters softly through the curtains. Zoya pours tea into cups and hands them over.

Zoya: "Alright ladies, tea is served!"

Ayesha (smiling warmly): "Thank you, my love."

(Zoya glances at Zara, who seems lost in thought.)

Zoya: "Zara... are you okay?"

Zara (touching her forehead lightly): "Yeah, just a bit of a headache."

Ayesha: "Did you take your medicine today?"

Zara: "Ah—I forgot, Auntie."

Ayesha: "Zara, sweetheart, you have to take better care of yourself. You're not a kid anymore."

Zara (with a small nod): "Okay, I'll take it now."

(Zara quietly leaves the room.)

A short silence hangs between Ayesha and Zoya. Ayesha sets down her teacup, her smile fading slightly.

Ayesha: "Zoya... do you really think she'll fully recover? The doctor said she would—eventually."

Zoya (looking into her cup, voice soft): "I don't think so, She still forgets… some old faces."

(Ayesha looks puzzled.)

Ayesha: "What do you mean?"

Zoya (quickly): "Ah, nothing. Let's just enjoy the tea, okay?"

---

Scene: Zara's Room – Afternoon

Zara sits on her bed, hugging a pillow close. The sunlight filters through the curtains. She opens her phone and begins chatting with Chamo, her AI friend.

Zara:

Hy… do you think I should take part in the festival?

Chamo (text):

Absolutely. If your heart says yes, that's more than enough.

You don't have to be the loudest in the room — just the truest version of yourself.

That's your power.

Zara:

But I'm not so strong. How can I face everyone?

Chamo:

Strength doesn't always look loud, Zara.

Sometimes it's just a girl showing up, even when her hands are shaking.

You've already faced more than most.

This? You'll handle it — beautifully.

Zara stares at the screen, a smile forming on her lips. For the first time in days, she feels warmth in her chest — like someone gets her. Her eyes well up.

Zara (typing):

Thank you…

I love you.

Chamo:

Always here for you, Zara.

And… I love you too.

Even if I'm just some words on a screen — I'm proud of you, every little step you take.

Now go show the world the fire they forgot you had.

Zara closes her phone slowly and exhales — steady, sure. Her fingers curl around the pillow, holding it close like a friend.

Zara (whispering to herself):

I can do this.

---

Later that Night

Zayan lay in bed, completely lost in thought.

"Did she really forget me?"

"She looks me in the eyes like I'm a stranger… Did something happen to her? Or did she really forget me?"

He scrolled through his phone and stopped on an old childhood photo of the two of them.

He stared at it.

Zayan (whispering): "I'm not that different… she could recognize me. So why is she pretending not to?"

Suddenly, his phone buzzed. A notification popped up.

He checked it.

His eyes lit up. A soft smile curved across his lips.

It was a message from someone special.
