Chapter 62: Goro! The Professional Trainer Exam!

"Hey, Kenji?"

Kenji paused, turning his head. A tall, sturdy-looking guy had sat down next to him at some point.

"You are...?" Kenji's mind raced, but he couldn't find a single memory of this person.

The guy was a bit tan and had a simple, goofy look to him. He scratched his head. "Hi, I'm Goro. I've seen you online."

Hearing this, Kenji was even more confused.

Goro didn't waste time. He pulled out his phone, tapped it a few times, and handed it to Kenji.

Kenji took it and saw that it was a video posted by the Windswept Pokémon Battle Club.

The video was quite long. It must have included other matches besides the one featuring his Gyarados.

"When you introduced yourself yesterday, I thought you looked familiar. It wasn't until I got back that I realized you were that guy," Goro said enthusiastically.

Kenji had just finished an eight-kilometer run and had no extra energy to shoot the breeze with this guy. They chatted on and off.

It turned out Goro was from Summit Province, just like him.

He wasn't from Edgecliff City, though, but from Crestview City.

...

For the next few days, Kenji would just collapse onto his villa's sofa the moment he got back, completely unwilling to move. He even got too lazy to cook, resorting to instant-prep meals.

While Kenji was busy with his orientation, Ekans and Larvitar hadn't been idle.

He had to admit, Gyarados was a fantastic drill instructor. Perhaps thanks to its experience teaching Magikarp, it supervised Ekans and Larvitar's training with practiced ease.

It had the two little ones whipped into shape, completely obedient.

Larvitar was the easy one. Its naturally timid personality meant it had no intention of resisting Gyarados's teaching and cooperated fully.

While its level was steadily increasing, Kenji had also tried to have Gyarados teach it Dragon Dance.

Unfortunately, limited by its B-Rank potential, its aptitude wasn't that high. After so many days, it still hadn't managed to learn the move.

Kenji was finally experiencing the meaning of "it's easy to go from frugal to lavish, but hard to go from lavish to frugal."

After getting used to Beedrill's learning speed of mastering a new move every day or two... watching a normal Pokémon learn a move could only be described as a turtle's pace.

In reality, Larvitar's potential was already top-tier among average Pokémon.

It just goes to show: without comparison, there is no pain.

Compared to Larvitar, Ekans was much more high-maintenance.

Every day, the moment Kenji got home, Ekans would zip over and burrow into his arms. It wouldn't be satisfied until it got a long session of comforting and praise.

But thankfully, while it complained and whined a lot, with Gyarados supervising, Ekans was diligent in its training.

In half a month, it had successfully raised its level to 12, pulling ahead of Larvitar, which was still only level 8.

Gyarados had also gained a level, reaching level 34.

As for Beedrill... its training speed could no longer be described as "shooting up like a rocket."

It had jumped two full levels, reaching level 54.

At this rate—two levels in two weeks—Beedrill would break through the Elite-level and hit the Gym Leader-level in just another month and a half!

This day, upon returning home, Kenji flopped face-first onto the sofa with a thud.

Hearing the door open, a black shadow shot out of the training room, climbed onto the sofa, and wrapped itself around Kenji's neck, nuzzling his face with its cool, scaly head.

The orientation was finally over.

All he could say was that while the physical constitution of humans in this world couldn't compare to Pokémon, it was far stronger than that of humans in his previous life.

He'd heard that the former Elite Four member from the Northeast wasn't an Ice-type master, but a Fighting-type master. His physical strength was so immense that he could fight on par with Fighting-type Pokémon without using moves.

After lying on the sofa for a while, Kenji slowly dragged himself up. He first took a shower, then prepared dinner for his four Pokémon before starting a cup of instant noodles for himself.

While waiting for the noodles to cook, Kenji opened his phone and glanced at his class schedule.

Orientation was over. Tomorrow, classes would officially begin.

Tomorrow... was also the day of his Professional Trainer exam.

He felt a surge of excitement at the thought of finally unlocking the system's remaining functions.

The exam was scheduled for 9 AM the next day.

Kenji arrived at the exam center, his ID card and the student ID he'd received tucked in his pocket.

He entered the building and took the elevator.

As soon as he got off on the seventh floor, a staff member was there waiting.

After verifying his identity, the staff member led Kenji to a small room.

The room was tiny, containing only a single desk and a chair. The desk's surface was an electronic display. All he had to do was scan his ID to begin.

Kenji sat down, picked up the stylus, and after scanning his ID, began the test.

The exam had a time limit of 120 minutes. The questions weren't too difficult, so Kenji only spent a little over an hour before he chose to submit.

After submitting, he left the room, retrieved his phone and Pokéballs from the staff member, and was then led toward the battlefields.

The battle area wasn't large, with a total of four fields. All of them were empty.

One of the examiners, who had been sitting to the side resting, saw Kenji approaching and stood up to greet him.

After the familiar process of scanning his ID and student card to confirm his identity, the examiner randomly selected three Pokéballs from a nearby rack.

Kenji also walked to his position on one of the battlefields.

Once the examiner was in his designated trainer's box, the referee raised a green flag and announced the rules: "This will be a 3v3 battle. Each side has one opportunity to switch their Pokémon. The match ends when all Pokémon on one side are unable to battle."

As the referee finished, he decisively swung the green flag down.

"Battle, begin!!"

"Go! Gyarados!!"

"Go!"

Both trainers threw their Pokéballs at the same time.

With its signature roar, Gyarados's massive body landed on the field.

On the opposite side, a yellow, humanoid Pokémon appeared, holding a pendulum on a string.

Hypno?

Kenji blinked.

This guy... forget his past life, even in this world, this Pokémon was an evergreen staple in... certain questionable comics. It was surprisingly popular.
