Chapter 148: Meeting Mia Again
After all, the National League Championship was a mixed bag, basically gathering the top trainers from the entire National League.
Most of Kenji's Pokémon were still stuck at the Elite level.
However, because they all possessed equipment and insanely high base stats, their true strength was roughly between Gym Leader-level and early Elite Four-level.
Take Gyarados, for example. If given the chance to stack Dragon Dance, it could defeat even a peak Gym Leader-level Aggron whose strength rivaled early Elite Four-level.
Using this level of power in the National Collegiate League, where most participants only had Elite-level Pokémon, was no different from an Elite trainer participating in a Baby Cup.
The villa's private training ground was sufficient for daily training.
Even if it wasn't enough, the villa complex where Kenji lived had a large, free training center equipped with top-tier facilities identical to those used at Metropolis Academy.
Kenji settled down and trained for a few days. While he was training, a call suddenly came from the complex's security gate, claiming a girl was looking for him.
...
"Wow, what a big villa," Mia exclaimed, carrying a small backpack and looking around curiously.
"If we're comparing size, who can compare to your house?" Kenji said casually.
"No way, my villa is much smaller than yours," Mia pouted.
Kenji looked puzzled. "Isn't the entire Edgecliff Gym basically your house?"
"What if my dad gets fired one day? Then it won't be," Mia shrugged.
This girl certainly thought far ahead.
Mia made herself at home, plopping down on the leather sofa in the living room and stretching lazily.
"When did you get back to Edgecliff? Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Kenji sat opposite Mia and asked.
"Just got back today. The plane ride was exhausting. If I'd known, I would have ridden Pidgeot back."
Mia complained while rubbing her shoulder.
"By the way, can I see all the Pokémon you've caught?" Suddenly, Mia sat up straight on the sofa, leaning toward Kenji with a face full of curiosity.
"Why not?" Kenji found Mia's question amusing.
"The National Collegiate League is coming up soon. I'm from Imperial Academy, you know. Aren't you afraid I'll leak your team info?" Mia stuck out her tongue teasingly.
Kenji looked completely unbothered. "Not afraid."
Exposing his Pokémon's strength would likely only bring despair to the other academies.
"Are you participating in this year's National Collegiate League?"
Mia sighed, a hint of disappointment in her eyes. "No. There are too many amazing people at a top school like Imperial Academy."
This outcome didn't surprise Kenji too much.
"But that's perfect. I can focus on cheering for you from the audience," Mia said, putting away her disappointment and joking with a grin.
Kenji's mouth twitched, his expression turning strange. "You, an Imperial Academy student, cheering for someone from Metropolis Academy... isn't that inappropriate?"
Mia hummed twice, looking indifferent. "What's inappropriate about it?"
While talking, Kenji led Mia to the training grounds.
"Wow, long time no see, Beedrill."
"Whoa, your Gyarados has gotten so huge!!"
They first visited the training ground where Gyarados and Beedrill were. Both were Kenji's earliest partners and had met Mia before, so they remembered her.
Seeing their trainer bring Mia over, they stopped what they were doing and looked over.
"Say hello to Mia," Kenji said with a smile.
"Hiss..." Beedrill waved a stinger, counting as a greeting.
Gyarados also let out a low growl.
Mia greeted the two Pokémon, then took a Pokéball from her belt and threw it.
"Come out!! Gyarados!!"
"ROOOAR!!!—"
Red light flew from the Pokéball, and a massive blue creature emerged—another Gyarados.
It was the Magikarp Kenji had given Mia.
After nearly half a year of training, it had evolved into a Gyarados.
Gyarados
Level: LV.25
Ability: Intimidate
Potential: A-
"ROOOAR!!!—"
As soon as it appeared, Mia's Gyarados roared, looking ferocious. But before it could maintain its intimidating pose for more than two seconds, it suddenly felt a chill down its spine.
When it saw the young man beside its trainer, its heart sank, and a bad premonition welled up.
Slowly and stiffly turning its head, it saw a Gyarados much, much larger than itself looking down at it.
"Roar..."
Mia's Gyarados shrank down, the ferocity on its face softening into an ingratiating grin as it let out a fawning growl. Unpleasant memories resurfaced in its mind.
Although both were Gyarados, Mia's was clearly a size smaller than Kenji's.
"Let's go. I'll take you to see the other training grounds," Kenji said.
Seeing the two humans about to leave, Mia's Gyarados turned to follow, but the next instant, it was frozen in place by a Leer from Kenji's Gyarados, not daring to move.
Mia glanced at her Gyarados. She was happy to let it learn from Kenji's Gyarados, so she left it there and walked out of the training ground.
In the second training ground, Ninetales and Bellossom were training.
"Ninetales! She's even more beautiful than in the videos!!!"
Mia's eyes lit up as she exclaimed.
Ninetales seemed to have sensed a stranger's arrival through her psychic powers and had reverted to her original form early on.
Clearly, Mia had already watched the videos of Ninetales's Contest performance.
"And your Bellossom is so cute too."
"Can I touch them?" Mia looked at Kenji eagerly.
Kenji nodded.
Mia carefully approached Ninetales, stroking her fur, then hugged Bellossom, nuzzling her cheek.
...
After seeing all of Kenji's Pokémon, Mia released her own team to introduce them to Kenji.
Mia had six Pokémon in total: Togekiss, Pidgeot, Gyarados, Noibat, Charmeleon, and Swablu.
