Leo jumped, goosebumps rising all over his body. He leaped forward, blurting out a curse, and turned around to look behind him.
Only then did he realize that Kenji, who should have fallen into the water, was standing perfectly intact behind him.
Behind Kenji, Beedrill hovered quietly nearby.
"Whoa, you scared me to death! When did you get behind me?" Leo patted his chest, letting out a long sigh of relief.
Kenji smiled and turned to look at Beedrill behind him. "Thanks, Beedrill."
"Hiss..."
If not for Beedrill's quick reaction, he would have been soaked.
It was winter, after all. Falling into the water would not be pleasant.
On the other side, Kenji's Gyarados, along with Mia and her Gyarados, swam back to shore.
"Kenji. Are you okay?" Mia jumped carefully off her Gyarados, looking concerned.
Kenji shook his head, signaling he was fine.
"Roar..."
Gyarados let out a low growl, an apologetic look on its fierce face, seeming to say sorry.
Kenji walked over, patting the trident crest on Gyarados's head, and said softly, "It's okay. It wasn't your fault."
And it was true. Falling into the water wasn't Gyarados's fault at all. Kenji could only blame himself for being a rookie, getting too excited, losing his balance, and slipping.
Gyarados had been swimming very steadily.
