The next day, Jimmy meets Mandy at 4:00 AM in front of the girls' dorm.
"Where did you get that thing?", Mandy asks as soon as she sees Jimmy on a skateboard, pushing toward her.
"I got it yesterday! Anyway, are you okay? Did you sleep well? Did you eat properly yesterday?", stopping in front of her, Jimmy asks while picking up the skateboard by the deck.
"Yes to everything you asked! Relax, I'm determined to get rid of this bulimia", Mandy replies with a sigh.
"Alright! By the way, here", Jimmy then pulls a stack of papers from his backpack and hands them to her; in these pages were both of their diets, with what they could or couldn't eat, recipes, schedules, and even the cheat days marked.
"Does it come with an instruction manual? It's hard to understand", glancing briefly at that stack of pages full of information, Mandy asks jokingly, feeling a bit lost, to be honest.
Although he knew she was joking, Jimmy moves closer to Mandy and starts explaining each paragraph over her shoulder, which makes her blush because of the proximity.
Then, after guiding her through everything written on those papers, they both head to the football field, where Jimmy begins coaching her in training.
An hour later, the two have breakfast together, both completely sweaty and exhausted, before heading back to their respective dorms.
After a cold shower, Jimmy gets ready and heads to class, with his backpack on and riding his skateboard.
And so the day passes without any problems, and at 2:30 PM, the bell signaling the end of the last class of the day rings.
So, as soon as Jimmy finishes changing in the boys' locker room of the gym and steps onto the court, the loudspeakers on the walls sound with a message: "Attention! Student James Hopkins must report to the administration reception; there is a package addressed to him."
It was the second day of his second month at this school, so this package was most likely the one thousand dollars of allowance agreed upon with his stepfather.
Arriving quickly at the main building, Jimmy grabs his skateboard in a fluid motion before going up the stairs, skipping a few steps, and entering the building.
Upon arriving at the administration office on the second floor of the building, Jimmy sees Miss Danvers standing behind the reception desk. He then approaches and says, "Miss Danvers, I was called to pick up a package."
"Here! Now stop wasting my time and get out of here", noticing Jimmy, Miss Danvers grabs a thick envelope in front of her and hands it to him while speaking in a cold, disdainful manner, shooing him away as if he were an animal.
Taking the envelope, Jimmy puts it in his backpack before muttering with a smile from someone who was thinking about doing something stupid, "Get out of here? All right!"
He then hops on his skateboard and pushes hard, gaining a lot of speed in a short distance.
Then, when Miss Danvers notices what he is doing and starts running after him in a mix of surprise, anger, and indignation, Jimmy heads straight toward the railing that faces the first section of the stairs below.
As he gets close to the railing, Jimmy jumps it with a Heelflip, flying high while Miss Danvers's screams draw everyone's attention to him.
With everyone moving out of the way so they wouldn't be hit, Jimmy lands, bending his knees to soften the impact, successfully executing the trick.
"HOPKINS! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD?", from the railing on the second floor, facing the administration office, Miss Danvers yells at Jimmy, seething with anger.
"Nobody got hurt, so relax!", despite knowing he had screwed up and was in trouble, Jimmy calmly comments while smoothly cruising through the entrance hall, everyone around staring at the scene in shock and interest.
"I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR VOICE, DETENTION NOW!", Miss Danvers continues, her voice warping with anger, which soon draws the attention of the hall monitors, teachers, and the principal himself.
"Fair enough", Jimmy murmurs, shrugging. The reality is that he felt like doing it and simply did, without thinking about the possible consequences of his actions at the moment.
Leaving his office after hearing Miss Danvers' shouting, Dr. Crabblesnitch asks upon reaching her side, "What's going on here?"
Stopping in the middle of the hall and grabbing his skateboard, Jimmy responds loud enough for Headmaster Crabblesnitch to hear from the second floor, the silence that had formed in the hall helping in this regard: "I jumped from the second floor with my skateboard and landed a Heelflip in midair before landing here successfully."
"He put everyone down there at risk by doing that, headmaster!", Miss Danvers explains to the headmaster in a soft tone, completely different from how she had been speaking just a few seconds ago.
"Why did you do that, Hopkins?", Dr. Crabblesnitch turns to Jimmy and asks. At that point, most of the people in the building had gathered around the hall to see how the scene would unfold.
"Because I felt like it and I thought I could do it, which turned out to be true!", Jimmy says, shrugging.
"You still remember that this school is your last chance, right?", frowning upon hearing what Jimmy had just said, Dr. Crabblesnitch asks, wanting to know if he remembered that important detail.
"I do, and I'm taking it very seriously!", Jimmy replies seriously.
"It doesn't seem like it, you're becoming a bum", Dr. Crabblesnitch comments accusatorily, not caring whether they were having an audience or not.
"Bum? Where did you get that from, sir? Because, as far as I know, all the teachers can contest that statement for me!", Jimmy asks with a furrowed brow, not understanding where the headmaster got that idiotic statement from.
"That skateboard, that's why!", Dr. Crabblesnitch says, pointing at the skateboard in Jimmy's hand, which makes the boy burst out laughing loudly.
"I see, skateboarding is something for bums, right?", with the smile of someone who had just heard something funny, Jimmy comments upon understanding the headmaster's outdated and prejudiced way of thinking.
"That's right!", Dr. Crabblesnitch says, confirming what Jimmy had already imagined.
"Know that skateboarding is a sport like any other! I'm sure it will be in the Olympics one day! Now, as for me, the reality is that I'm better than your best student, sir! It's not a skateboard that's going to make me a bum or change my grades, which, by the way, are perfect, in case you want to check with your staff", Jimmy retorts coldly, making the students murmur among themselves, most of them surprised by his courage to confront the headmaster.
Upon receiving a confirming nod from every teacher he looked at, Dr. Crabblesnitch says after a few seconds of reflection, "All right, Hopkins! A sport, huh? You've already been put in detention, so that will be all; you'll spend this afternoon working."
"That's fine by me", Jimmy says with a calm expression; he had pulled off that trick without thinking and would accept the punishment without complaining.
What he had done was wrong because it could have hurt a lot of people, so a punishment was well deserved, and Jimmy agreed with that.
Dr. Crabblesnitch then says aloud, "An inspector, take him to detention!"
Then, as soon as an inspector approaches Jimmy and tries to snatch the skateboard from his hand, our protagonist pulls it away and growls at the man while pointing at him as a warning, "If you try to take my skateboard again, I'll break your nose!"
"I said to take him to detention, not to take his skateboard! And Hopkins, I'll let you keep that thing, but I don't want to see you riding it inside the campus buildings anymore", upon seeing this, Dr. Crabblesnitch scolds his employee before turning to Jimmy and warning him that this was the first and last time he would do something like that.
"And outside?", Jimmy asks, wanting to know if he had permission to skateboard around the campus.
"Outside, you can do whatever you want. As long as your grades stay the way they are, I won't forbid you from practicing this 'sport'", Dr. Crabblesnitch says before returning to his office.
With everything settled, the crowd begins to disperse, gossiping among themselves, while Jimmy, now escorted by one of the inspectors, becomes the subject of all those conversations.
[Explanation of why Jimmy did this stupid thing: the straightforward explanation is that I thought it would be cool to show him jumping on a skateboard from the second floor of the school, and I only thought about the consequences of that after I had already written it. Now, narratively, Jimmy is still a teenager despite being much more mature, so he's going to do dumb shit without thinking from time to time.]
