Atop a building in Kikyō Castle, Gekkō Hayate was cornered by Baki.
"Isn't this... Chunin Examiner? What are you doing here?" Baki asked, feigning ignorance.
Hayate didn't dare waste time. He drew the katana from his back, his expression serious.
"It seems I'll have to fight. Cough... cough..."
He had uncovered a secret belonging to the Hidden Sand Village, and they wouldn't let him leave alive.
But even if he died, he had to relay this information back to Konoha.
"Konoha Style: Crescent Moon Dance!"
Hayate split into three figures, attacking Baki from different directions.
This was essentially a combined assault using two Shadow Clones, striking the opponent's vital points from the left, top, and right.
Unfortunately, he was only a Special Jōnin, while the opponent's status in Sunagakure was comparable to Kakashi's during Tsunade's era in Konoha.
Although it couldn't be said that Baki's strength matched Kakashi's, he was definitely an Elite Jōnin.
He stood his ground, not even dodging. Hayate's blade struck his shoulder, tearing through a layer of skin and flesh but failing to penetrate deeper—it even got stuck.
"This is the Konoha Style: Crescent Moon Dance," Baki said with mild admiration. "To master this technique at such a young age, your village truly hides dragons and crouching tigers. Your swordsmanship is excellent..."
"However, blocking a tangible blade is one thing—my Wind Blade is unstoppable!"
He grabbed Hayate's sword with one hand to prevent him from retreating, while raising two fingers with the other as chakra surged at his fingertips.
As a swordsman, Gekkō Hayate saw no reason to abandon his weapon.
Even sensing danger approaching, he stubbornly tried to free his stuck katana.
Just as Baki's attack was about to land, a long snake shot out from the side, coiling around Baki's arm and pulling him away.
It was Anko Mitarashi's Hidden Shadow Snake Hands!
Baki's Wind Blade went astray, slicing into a nearby rooftop.
Swish, swish, swish!
A flurry of chaotic wind blades shredded the rooftop to pieces.
A large tree suddenly grew behind Baki, its vines snaking out and binding him tightly to the trunk.
This was Kurenai Yuhi's Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Killing.
But instead of Kurenai appearing, Yugao Uzuki stepped forward — and there were three of her.
Also using the Crescent Moon Dance, Yugao's technique was slightly inferior to Hayate's, but Baki was trapped in Genjutsu, his body left defenseless.
Three blades slashed into Baki almost simultaneously, blood spraying as he jolted awake in agony.
At that moment, Anko again used Hidden Shadow Snake Hands to yank both Yugao and Hayate away from Baki.
Since Baki had no active defense this time, their blades weren't stuck, allowing them to retrieve them easily.
"Ahhhh!" Baki let out an enraged roar. His chakra burst outward, a fierce whirlwind spiraling around him.
The gusts were so violent they resembled a level-ten typhoon, mixed with a black mist that obscured everyone's vision.
When the whirlwind finally dissipated, Baki's figure had vanished.
"Damn it, he got away!" Hayate cursed under his breath, then turned to Yugao, surprised. "Yugao, why are you here?"
"Hayate!!" Yugao rushed forward, wanting to embrace him.
She had been terrified—truly believing she'd never see him again.
"Cough... cough... cough..."
A violent fit of coughing pushed Yugao away; Hayate almost coughed up his lungs.
"Hayate, are you alright?!" Yugao's expression changed drastically as she moved to support him.
But suddenly, Hayate's body stiffened. He drew his sword and slashed at Yugao.
Yugao froze, stunned by disbelief.
Hidden Shadow Snake Hands!
Thankfully, Anko and Kurenai had already closed in.
Anko immediately shot another snake to pull Yugao back, shouting angrily, "Hayate, what the hell are you doing?!"
"He's not himself! Retreat, now!" Kurenai's expression was grim as she blocked Hayate's next attack with a kunai.
Seeing Yugao still in shock, Anko grabbed her and pulled her away quickly.
But strangely, Hayate's movements were completely unlike his usual form. Despite wielding a katana, he was easily knocked to the ground by Kurenai's quick kunai strikes.
"This feeling..." Kurenai murmured, frowning. Something was off — a sensation she couldn't quite put into words.
Meanwhile, in a dark corner some distance away, Yakushi Kabuto supported a bloodied Baki.
The area was already concealed by one of Kabuto's anti-perception barriers.
Baki, pale-faced and furious, muttered, "I didn't expect Konoha's reinforcements to arrive so quickly. A miscalculation! What now? They've discovered our plan—we'll have to stop..."
"It's too early to say that," Kabuto interrupted, glancing toward the distant scene of Hayate attacking Yugao and Kurenai.
His expression twisted slightly. "This is odd. Is someone else secretly helping us?"
Baki frowned, shaking his head. "I can confirm it's not my people."
"It shouldn't be from the Sound Village either," Kabuto said, smirking faintly. "Regardless... the waters have been muddied."
He continued calmly, "Returning to the topic, the Konoha Chunin Exams are already set. The various Daimyō, high-ranking officials, and wealthy merchants are either on their way or preparing to depart. Konoha can't cancel the exams now."
"What do you mean?" Baki asked, confused.
Kabuto smiled. "It means that even if Konoha suspects something, the exams must go on. The officials and wealthy merchants have already placed their bets; Konoha wouldn't dare offend them by revoking Gaara's eligibility."
"Furthermore, they don't know our exact plan. Aside from adding more guards, they can't do much. So, things will continue as they were before. The overall situation hasn't changed."
He added with a smirk, "Besides, Gekkō Hayate doesn't have concrete evidence of tonight's events, does he? At most, it's just his word."
"You just have to deny everything. Leave the rest to Lord Kazekage — he should have experience handling such matters."
Baki stared at Kabuto for a long moment, then sighed. "As expected of Orochimaru's right-hand man. Fine, we'll proceed as planned. But I have one condition..."
On the other side, Hayate was quickly restrained by Kurenai.
After a short while, he regained consciousness.
"Cough... cough... Sorry," Hayate said weakly.
"I was being controlled just now. It felt a bit like a Yamanaka Clan secret technique — but also a bit like Genjutsu. It seems there's another hidden enemy!"
"I noticed," Kurenai replied, frowning. "I also thought it was similar to a Yamanaka technique, but not exactly. And the Yamanaka wouldn't attack their own allies. I couldn't sense anyone else nearby either."
"Hayate!" Yugao finally spoke up, stepping forward.
But before she could say anything more, footsteps echoed nearby — it was Baki, leading a squad of Sunagakure ninja.
"No good! Let's go!" Hayate's expression darkened as he stood up. Kurenai and Yugao exchanged uneasy glances.
"Konoha ninja, what are you doing here? It seems there was a battle?" Baki asked with feigned concern.
"We're stationed nearby and rushed over when we heard the commotion. Hidden Sand and Konoha are allies — please, let us know if you need help."
His tone and demeanor left them momentarily speechless.
Looking closely, Baki wore the same clothes as before — but there were no wounds, no blood, and his face showed no signs of injury.
The Konoha shinobi exchanged glances, uncertainty flickering in their eyes.
So... what exactly happened?
Was the person who fought Hayate earlier not the real Baki?
Or...
Are there two Bakis in Sunagakure?
