Val has ended up in the hospital so many times since I met him that it's starting to scare me.
He's escaped death so many times that… what if one day his luck runs out?
The thought sits heavy in my chest as I stare down at my hands.
We've all been sitting here in the waiting area for hours now, and no one's said much.
The silence is suffocating.
Salvatore is sitting across from me, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, and his hands folded together in front of his mouth as if he's praying.
Nonna's been in tears since we left the house.
Francesca hasn't left her side for even a second. She's holding her close, gently rubbing her back, whispering quiet reassurances I can't hear.
Rafa is sitting right next to me.
I don't even need to look at him to know how anxious he is.
The rapid bouncing of his knee says everything.
