Chapter 33 - Esther: A Reason to Look Good

The sound of the door still echoed in my ears. For a moment, I almost wished I hadn't slammed it. Almost. My chest still burned from his command, the way my body moved before my mind could stop it.

I let out a soft sigh and turned my attention to the table in front of me, the bowl of apples catching my eye. 

"They're even larger than the ones I picked today," I said, looking at the bright red apple in my hand.

I turned the apple over in my hands, running my thumb along its glossy skin. I didn't want to admit it, but I recognized the careful way they'd been chosen— no bruises, no imperfections. He'd chosen each one carefully. On purpose.

My eyes suddenly flickered over to the large window in front of me. Freedom was right in front of me, just on the other side of that glass. It would only take a simple leap, and I was free... except that my legs stayed glued in place.
