Chapter 128 - Chapter 128: Bloody Battle of the Positions

Chapter 128: Bloody Battle of the Positions

Orbital bombardment hammered down from the void, each strike erasing thousands of the Ork horde massed below. Ground-based war bases answered with hydrogen bombs that vaporized millions in blinding detonations. The exchange never ceased, deafening thunder rolling across the entire planet in an endless drumbeat of annihilation.

The Legion unleashed sustained firepower on a scale they had never attempted before. The war situation demanded nothing less. Violent chains of explosions reduced countless Orks to ash and dust, the shockwaves rippling outward across contaminated wastelands.

Ground bombardment tactics were carried out simultaneously across all positions, the data repository reorganized and compiled statistics in real time, numbers climbing at a horrifying pace. Bright studied the tactical display, tracking the numerous Ork advance routes, then reported to Omega with barely concealed tension.

"Lord Primarch, there are too many Orks advancing toward our positions. Even just the scattered warbands reaching our perimeter already number in the millions."

He gestured at the streaming data. "The longer this drags on, the more will arrive. We're projecting over ten million concentrated at our positions."

The implication hung heavy in the command center. Once large numbers of Orks reached the war base directly, orbital bombardment and nuclear weapons became unusable; they would kill as many of their own as the enemy. That left only one option: bloody, close-quarters battle. The kind that ground armies into nothing.

Everyone in the command center turned toward Omega. Below them, Alpharius was already leading his warriors in a fierce ground engagement.

Omega understood the tactical nightmare clearly. The sheer number of Orks meant that even under constant orbital and nuclear bombardment, massive warbands would reach the war bases. This would continue for some time. And the bases could not be relocated.

This was going to be a positional defensive battle of attrition. He thought of Rogal Dorn for a moment, then gave his orders.

"Immediate orders to the Legions Mechanicum forces: reinforce and renovate all war bases. Make them taller and thicker. I want ten times the current number of energy defense shields installed around each position."

Even as he spoke, Omega mentally recalled war fortresses from past campaigns, the massive strongholds he had encountered in the Solar System. He quickly drafted the most defensible positions possible based on his current war base designs, incorporating every lesson he had learned.

Time ground forward.

Millions of Orks surged across the surface, braving the missile and artillery fire that rained down without mercy. They clashed with the human army at the war base perimeters with savage determination.

Electromagnetic cannons and ion guns fired without pause across the defensive lines, their discharge creating a near-continuous roar of unleashed energy.

The towering God-Machines of the Titan Legions advanced alongside Mind Control Legion units, the Faith Guard regiments, and both Space Marines and the mortal Armsmen. Together they formed an iron torrent of military might that met the Orkish assault head-on.

The warlike Orks, piloting their ramshackle but surprisingly resilient meks, charged forward with gleeful enthusiasm. The two armies collided across hundreds of kilometers of contested ground outside the war base. Corpses from both sides fell continuously, piling high across the killing fields. One human regiment after another charged forward, fought with desperate courage, and vanished like foam on the vast battlefield.

The brutality and rapid pace of the war forced Omega to delegate global command authority to the data think-tank network operating from the space bridge.

Then he teleported directly to the surface.

Omega materialized on the battlefield in a flash of spatial displacement energy. His Terminator-pattern warplate hummed with power as he drew his blade, a power sword filled with high-density white jade-colored energy. He charged straight into the maelstrom where millions of Orks and humans clashed.

Around him, the battlefield raged. Countless Ork Boyz and Deff Dreads traded fire with human forces, while the massive Gargants towered above it all, their weapons blazing.

His sword became a blur. Hundreds of Ork Boyz fell with each pass, their bodies joining the corpses already piled high across the ground. A casual flick of his wrist bisected several Deff Dreads entirely, their ramshackle construction no match for a Primarch's strength.

Upon seeing Omega arrive, several Alpha Legion company commanders moved closer to his position, forming a protective cordon and clearing the way.

With Omega as its spearhead, a massive human-mechanical army hundreds of thousands strong crashed into the Ork masses like a hammer.

Ork meks, each over ten meters tall, were shredded like parchment beneath his blade. Omega carved through the meat-grinder battlefield with terrible efficiency.

Within minutes, tens of thousands of Orks in the surrounding area lay dead. Then more than a dozen Ork Warbosses charged in, piloting super-Gargants over thirty meters tall.

Warlord-class Titans stepped forward to intercept them, each footfall shaking the ground. Behind them, heavy electromagnetic and ion cannons fired repeatedly at the Orkish meks and scrap-built war engines. The entire battlefield became engulfed in flames and smoke.

A massive Ork Warboss mek hurtled toward Omega. He sidestepped with precise timing.

After deflecting several blows, Omega flashed forward and delivered a devastating left fist, gravity hammer technology channeled through the strike, slamming it into the opponent's thigh joint.

BOOM!

The impact shattered the leg completely. The Ork Warboss had barely taken a step when cracking sounds echoed through its frame, movements becoming sluggish and full of openings. Omega surged forward and thrust his power sword deep into the Warboss's chest.

CRASH!

As one of the super-Gargants collapsed, Omega was already charging at the next target, tearing apart one Ork mek after another like a devastating engine of war.

His ability to teleport at will gave him an overwhelming advantage. He calculated spatial positions with precision, often materializing directly at a Gargant's chest or cockpit. By the time the Ork pilot noticed his presence, an impossibly sharp power sword had already pierced its vitals.

With unpredictable, space-flickering movement, Omega coordinated with the Titans beside him to systematically destroy every super-Gargant on the battlefield.

But the Ork army seemed endless, hundreds of thousands more Orks charged straight at Omega's position.

The next moment, thousands of Ork Boyz at the forefront were blasted into the air, and countless spear strikes carved into the greenskin masses.

The war continued without end, as if there were no limit to the enemies that needed killing. Omega lost count of how many Orks he had slain.

Ten days later

The Mechanicus army finished reinforcing the energy defenses around every war base. The Omega forces halted their advance and withdrew to conduct positional defense operations. The Ork army surged forward in a mighty green wave.

Looking toward the horizon in any direction revealed countless greenskin armies. The number of Orks seemed completely unchanged. Explosions echoed everywhere. Omega contacted Bright directly for a status update.

The moment Bright reported that over 500 million Orks had been annihilated, a powerful energy shockwave swept across from a distance.

The blast wave traveled across hundreds of kilometers of corpse-littered battlefield, washing over countless greenskins still standing. In the distance, explosions became clearly visible, hurling innumerable Orks into the air.

At the war base positions, the human army seized the opportunity immediately, a massive volume of shells and explosives killed Orks by the thousands.

Because the war bases had been thoroughly fortified and reinforced, they weathered the blast without significant damage. Omega knew immediately that Bright had conducted long-range orbital bombardment to relieve pressure on his position.

"Alleviate pressure on the other war bases as well. Reduce their numbers as much as possible."

"Yes, Primarch!" Upon receiving the clear order, Bright in orbit began systematic bombing operations. After each wave of strikes, countless Orks fell, becoming easy prey for the Alpha Legion forces. All ten war bases exploited the situation to eliminate large numbers efficiently.

Twenty days later

The war base perimeter was buried in Ork corpses. The bodies covered hundreds of kilometers in every direction, piled tens of meters high. Mountains of greenskin dead hundreds of meters tall rose across the landscape at irregular intervals. Smoke and fire burned everywhere.

Even though Omega had installed tenfold energy shields to defend each war base position, one or two shields were breached by enemy fire during particularly intense assaults.

More concerning, the height of the corpse mountains far exceeded initial projections. The war bases were reinforced and thickened again while the battle raged.

Two months later

After intensive bombing operations, the Ork army on Planet Effie had been reduced from over one billion to just over three hundred million.

The past two months had been dominated almost entirely by orbital bombardment and hydrogen strikes. With the Ork numbers significantly reduced and pressure eased, the countless missiles stockpiled at the ten war bases came to play a significant role in bombardment tactics.

Another three months later

After expending hundreds of millions of missiles and a large number of nuclear warheads, combined with fierce defensive battles at all ten war bases, the Ork army across the entire planet had finally been reduced to less than one hundred million. The planet was cratered and scarred beyond recognition.

Omega stood atop the reinforced and thickened walls of his war base, surrounded by Ork corpses piled over fifty meters high. The sight shook him.

The bases had deliberately burned many of the corpses to prevent the Orks from using their height to compromise defensive positions.

The three fleets had carried a total of 250 million missiles and a large stockpile of nuclear bombs initially. They had fought until the sky darkened and the earth descended into chaos.

Omega had never cared about the environmental impact. All that mattered was killing every last Ork.

He paused, surveying the scarred landscape carefully. 'I used to think that hundreds of millions of missiles were significant ammunition reserves. Now I understand that no amount of ordnance is truly sufficient for warfare at this scale.'

Facing an army of 100 million Orks still remaining, the Alpha Legion drew on their previous combat experience.

However, after the large-scale bombing campaign, the Orks' air defense capabilities were no longer as formidable as they had been initially. Aerial and missile bombardment continued with devastating effectiveness.
