The Charter of Institutional Cooperation between the Obsidian Academy and the Temple of Light was one hundred and forty-seven pages long, written in a formal register that predated three of the four dynasties currently claiming authority in the Mid Realm, and had been sitting on Qin's desk for the better part of a decade.
He turned a page. The paper was old enough to whisper when it moved.
The morning light came through the narrow windows of his office in pale winter bars, falling across the desk, across the stacked scrolls and formation journals and the cold tea that had been hot an hour ago. Outside, the Academy went about its business. Nearly a hundred thousand students moving through corridors and training grounds, oblivious to the weight of the document their headmaster was reading for what might have been the four hundredth time.
