Chapter 108 - Chapter 108: Winter Approaches

Chapter 108: Winter Approaches

POV: Adam

Deep winter transformed Skellige into a frozen fortress.

Blizzards arrived in walls of white that lasted days, sometimes weeks, cutting visibility to arm's length and making outdoor training impossible. The ocean froze solid within a hundred meters of shore, ice thick enough to walk on but too unstable for ships. Communication with the continent ceased entirely—Triss's mirror worked, but even magical connections struggled against the storms' interference.

The isolation should have felt oppressive. Instead, it felt like relief.

"Your form's improving." Thorvald's assessment came during indoor sparring, our practice swords clashing in the great hall's cleared center. "Less hesitation in your transitions. You're trusting the combinations rather than calculating them."

"Months of practice."

"Months of good practice." The giant parried my strike, countered with speed that still surprised me despite familiarity. "Bad practice just reinforces bad habits. You've been trained well."

Our session continued for another hour, my body moving through combinations that had become instinctive—elemental enhancement without conscious direction, tactical positioning without deliberate thought. When elements joined the training, the combinations became devastating.

"The ice coating is new." Thorvald wiped sweat from his forehead despite the hall's chill. "Adds damage and makes the impacts harder to block."

"Water and earth together. The ice bonds to stone, creates something stronger than either separately."

"And the air pressure launch?"

"Replaces needing to throw physically. Means I can send projectiles from any direction, not just where my hands point." I let the Earth Armor dissolve, feeling exhaustion settle into muscles that had been pushed to limits. "Still can't match you in pure swordsmanship, but—"

"But you don't need to." Thorvald's grin showed approval rather than condescension. "Fighting isn't about matching opponents on their terms. It's about forcing them onto yours. You're learning that."

POV: Lambert

The witcher found himself surprisingly content as winter deepened.

Witchers were accustomed to isolation—long months at Kaer Morhen between contracts, winters spent maintaining weapons and brewing potions while snow buried the mountain keep. But Skellige's winter offered something different: community.

"Your deal." Geralt slid cards across the table, their corner game occupying a space near the main hall's fire.

"You're going to lose."

"I've been losing to you for thirty years. No reason to change now."

Lambert studied his hand, calculating odds that witcher mutations made easier to compute. Around them, Skellige warriors conducted their own winter entertainments—arm wrestling contests, drinking competitions, storytelling circles where elderly warriors shared tales of battles long past.

"They've accepted us." Lambert voiced the observation he'd been processing for weeks. "Actually accepted us, not just tolerated. When's the last time that happened?"

"Doesn't happen." Geralt's response carried familiar resignation. "Witchers are tools, used and discarded. That's how it's always been."

"Maybe not always. Maybe things change."

"You're getting philosophical."

"I'm getting old." Lambert played his cards, watched Geralt's expression shift toward defeat. "And I'm starting to wonder if there's more to existence than wandering the Path alone until something finally kills us."

"Dangerous thinking."

"Realistic thinking. We're different now—connected to people who want us around, not just what we can do for them." Lambert gestured toward the far corner, where Adam and Ciri practiced dimensional coordination, her phasing complementing his elemental strikes. "Look at them. They've built something real. Family, almost. We're part of that, whether we intended it or not."

"And when the Hunt returns? When people start dying again?"

"Then we fight. Same as always. But we fight for something, not just against threats." Lambert collected his winnings as Geralt conceded the round. "That's worth having, even if it ends badly."

POV: Ciri

The northern lights danced above Skellige's frozen peaks.

She watched them from the battlements, wrapped in furs that had become second skin over the winter months, feeling Adam's warmth beside her despite layers of insulation.

"Beautiful." The word felt inadequate for the spectacle—green and purple curtains rippling across the night sky, ancient light from sources she couldn't comprehend.

"The druids say they're spirits dancing." Adam's breath misted in the frigid air. "Ancestors celebrating in the afterlife, visible to those still living."

"Do you believe that?"

"I believe they're beautiful regardless of explanation. Sometimes that's enough."

They stood in comfortable silence, the intimacy of shared observation needing no conversation. Below, Kaer Trolde's lights flickered—torches and fires marking a community enduring winter's harshest months together.

"What happens after?" Ciri's question emerged without planning. "After the Hunt. After we defeat them or... don't. What comes next?"

"I don't know." His honesty carried no anxiety. "We've been surviving so long, I haven't thought about living. About normal life, whatever that means."

"Do you want normal?"

"I want you." The words came simple, true. "Everything else is negotiable. We could stay here, build life in Skellige. We could return to the continent, find somewhere peaceful. We could explore dimensions, see worlds no one from this reality has ever visited." He turned to face her, features illuminated by aurora's glow. "Where doesn't matter. Who matters. And who has always been you."

POV: Adam

The kiss that followed felt like answer to questions neither had fully formed.

Not desperate like their early embraces, driven by fear and uncertainty. Not hungry like comfort sought against trauma's weight. This was something quieter—recognition of partnership that had grown through crisis into something stable, permanent, chosen rather than forced.

"I love you." Ciri's words came against his lips. "Not because of prophecy or destiny or whatever cosmic forces think they're controlling. Because you're you, and I'm me, and together we're something neither of us could be alone."

"I know." He held her close, felt their bond pulse with warmth that transcended physical sensation. "I've known for months. Probably longer."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

"Wasn't sure you were ready to hear it. Wasn't sure I was ready to say it." He laughed quietly. "Turns out we were both just being careful with something precious."

"We're not careful people."

"We're learning to be. About important things, at least."

The aurora continued its dance overhead. Winter continued its grip on the islands. Somewhere across dimensions, the Hunt continued gathering strength for return.

But here, in this moment, wrapped in each other against the cold, none of that mattered.
