Chapter 109 - Chapter 109: Yennefer's Arrival

Chapter 109: Yennefer's Arrival

POV: Geralt

The portal opened without warning.

One moment, Kaer Trolde's great hall held the usual winter evening gathering—warriors drinking, stories being told, fires crackling against the cold. The next, reality tore along an invisible seam, and a woman stepped through who made the temperature drop further despite the flames.

Yennefer of Vengerberg.

Geralt's response was visceral, immediate—years of history compressed into a heartbeat's reaction that mixed longing, wariness, and something uncomfortably close to fear.

"Geralt." Her voice carried the same velvet edge he remembered. "You look... older."

"You don't."

"Magic has its advantages." Her violet eyes swept the hall, cataloging threats and opportunities with the efficiency of someone who'd survived court intrigue since before Skellige's oldest warrior was born. "I'm not here for you, though. Where's the girl?"

"Which girl?"

"Don't be tedious. Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon. The one with Elder Blood strong enough to reshape dimensions. The one every power on the continent is suddenly very interested in." Yennefer moved past him, black dress somehow pristine despite the portal's passage. "I need to speak with her."

POV: Adam

The sorceress radiated power like a forge radiated heat.

I'd felt strong magic before—the druids, the Hunt riders, even Ciri when her Elder Blood surged—but Yennefer existed on a different scale entirely. Her presence bent ambient energy toward herself, as if reality acknowledged her dominance and arranged itself accordingly.

[ Threat Level: Extreme (if hostile) ]

"You're the elemental." Her assessment came cold, clinical. "The one who fought Eredin directly and survived. Impressive, for someone so young."

"I'm Adam."

"Names don't interest me. Capabilities do." She circled me slowly, and I felt her magical senses probing—not attacking, but examining, cataloging what I could do. "Three elements at Master tier, fire unlocked but undeveloped, spiritual awareness beyond your apparent training level. How did you achieve this?"

"Practice."

"Don't lie to me, boy. I've watched mages train for decades. Your progression rate is... anomalous." Her violet eyes met mine, and I felt pressure against my consciousness—attempts to read thoughts I refused to share. "What are you?"

"I'm Ciri's protector. Everything else is irrelevant."

The probing stopped. Something flickered in her expression—surprise, perhaps, or grudging respect.

"Loyal. That's... useful."

—Scene Break—

POV: Ciri

She recognized Yennefer from descriptions, though they'd never met directly.

Geralt's former lover. Her mother's friend, reportedly. One of the most powerful sorceresses alive, and definitely one of the most dangerous. The woman who'd promised Pavetta to watch over her daughter and failed spectacularly—until now.

"You knew my mother." Ciri kept her voice neutral, emotions carefully controlled. "You promised to protect me."

"I did. And I failed." Yennefer's acknowledgment held no apology—just statement of fact. "Circumstances... complicated my ability to fulfill that promise. The Lodge's politics, Geralt's choices, my own mistakes. None of that excuses the failure, but perhaps it explains it."

"And now?"

"Now I'm here to make amends. To teach you what I should have taught years ago. To give you tools for survival that go beyond raw power." Yennefer's posture shifted subtly—still commanding, but less aggressive. "The Lodge wants to control you. Some members would cage you 'for your protection' while using your abilities for political advantage. I want to make you strong enough that no one can cage you, including the Lodge."

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't. Trust is earned, not granted." The sorceress's smile held no warmth but considerable honesty. "Test me. Question my motives. Watch for betrayal at every step. But let me teach you while you're watching. Let me give you knowledge that could save your life."

—Scene Break—

POV: Adam

The negotiation stretched for hours.

Yennefer wanted complete access to Ciri's training—control over magical education, authority to direct her development. Ciri wanted knowledge without obligation—lessons that didn't come with political strings, teaching that remained autonomous.

"You're asking for trust without evidence." Yennefer's frustration grew as her initial offers were rejected. "I'm offering resources the Lodge has spent centuries accumulating—"

"And the Lodge's resources come with the Lodge's expectations." Ciri's counter remained firm. "I'll learn from you. I'll accept your teaching. But I won't join the Lodge, won't attend their meetings as obligation, won't let my abilities be weaponized for political games I don't understand."

"That's naive. Politics affects everyone whether they participate or not."

"Then I'll participate on my terms, when I choose, with allies I've selected. Not because a sorceress showed up and demanded compliance."

Geralt watched the exchange with expression I couldn't read. His history with Yennefer complicated his judgment—I could see the conflict in how he positioned himself, close enough to intervene but not close enough to suggest alliance with either side.

"Fine." Yennefer's capitulation came abrupt, as if she'd calculated remaining obstinate would cost more than it gained. "Teach you, yes. Provide resources, yes. Political obligations, none—for now. But understand that eventually, you'll need to engage with powers beyond your small circle. When that day comes, I expect you to remember who helped you prepare."

"I remember everyone who's helped. And everyone who's tried to use me." Ciri's voice carried the steel she'd developed over months of survival. "Stay and teach. Help me grow stronger. But don't mistake my acceptance for submission. I'm not a tool to be wielded."

"No." Yennefer's assessment shifted to something approaching respect. "You're definitely not. Your mother would be proud."

—Scene Break—

POV: Geralt

He found Yennefer later, after arrangements had been made for her quarters and the immediate tension had faded.

"You've changed." The words came before he could stop them.

"Have I?" She stood at a window, watching snow fall through darkness. "Or have I simply revealed what was always present?"

"The Yen I knew would have pushed harder. Demanded more. Manipulated until she got what she wanted."

"The Yen you knew didn't understand how badly manipulation can backfire." She didn't turn to face him. "I've made mistakes, Geralt. With you, with myself, with people who deserved better than my schemes. Ciri deserves better than my schemes."

"Then why come?"

"Because I made a promise. Because Pavetta trusted me, and I failed her daughter for years. Because somewhere beneath all my plotting and ambition, I actually care whether that girl survives." Finally, she turned. "And because Adam watches me like I'm threat to be neutralized. Which means Ciri has protection I can't corrupt, even if I wanted to."

"He doesn't trust you."

"He shouldn't. Neither should she, or you, or anyone else who's learned what Lodge sorceresses are capable of." Yennefer's smile held bitter self-awareness. "But distrust can coexist with usefulness. They can use my knowledge while watching for betrayal. I can teach while accepting their suspicion. Everyone gets something, no one gets everything. That's politics, Geralt. That's how the world actually works."

"I hate it."

"I know." Her hand found his briefly—contact more intimate than anything they'd shared in years. "I know. But some of us don't have the luxury of hating it from outside. Some of us have to swim in the filth and try not to drown."
