Damien was quiet for a moment after mentioning Vanessa. He leaned back a little, his hand still resting on the counter, while holding mine as well.
"We dated for a long time," he said. "Things were rough then. I was involved in things I shouldn't have been, and she was always there.
She wasn't scared of anything I did. She liked the rush of it. She liked the attention. And for a while, I thought we wanted the same things."
I kept watching him. A part of me listened a little bit too intently to see his reaction and maybe to know if I could identify traces of regret or remorse.
Call it female jealousy or whatever, but I wanted to know if this Vanessa was so important to him even though they were supposedly over.
