"Uh... you... I can't believe you live next door."
Having walked one-in-front-of-the-other with Yu Yachen all the way, Ch'en Huijie looked awkwardly at the white-haired girl next door.
"You live alone?" Yu Yachen suddenly asked.
"Yeah. I don't want to rely on my uncle for everything, so I moved out," Ch'en replied.
"That's good. Me too. It's quieter."
"I heard you moved from Columbia. Your parents didn't come with you?"
Ch'en remembered that the apartment next door was always quiet. Part of the reason she'd never realized her classmate was her neighbor was because the girl was a total shut-in.
"No. It was my decision."
The white-haired girl turned to look at Ch'en. She smiled faintly, her blank expression finally shifting.
"If my parents knew about some things, they would be sad, wouldn't they?"
"Uh... what do you mean?" Ch'en was confused.
"Nothing. Forget I said it."
Yu Yachen took out her key and opened the door.
"Nice to be your neighbor, Ch'en Huijie."
"Yeah. You too."
She's really a weirdo.
Low-key, solitary, but impossible to ignore. From a normal person's perspective, it was impossible to understand her.
After that, Yu Yachen didn't interact with Ch'en much. Even though they were deskmates, the girl spoke to no one.
She showed no interest in any class activities.
Ch'en had often felt the urge to talk to her. The girl had a face that could get away with murder. But her cold attitude always stopped Ch'en.
This continued until the second semester of their first year.
"..."
The P.E. teacher's whistle echoed. Under the hot sun, the students, having finished their laps, collapsed by the track like boneless sardines.
With one exception.
"Hmph."
Ch'en Huijie let out a breath, not a single drop of sweat on her brow. She walked unhurriedly to the shade to get water.
She wanted to attend the Victorian Royal Guard Academy. This level of exercise was nothing. She glanced at her collapsed classmates.
Speaking of which, I haven't seen Yu Yachen. Did she skip class?
It was free time. Ch'en put down her water bottle and headed for the toilets.
Pushing open the bathroom door, she was hit with the smell of disinfectant. The sound of a running faucet... a white-haired girl was meticulously washing her hands.
Ch'en recognized her. She was washing her gloved hands. Yu Yachen glanced up, her eyes meeting Ch'en's in the mirror, before indifferently looking away.
Ch'en paid her no mind, but then her eyes caught sight of someone lying in the furthest stall... a male student with bleached-blond hair. He was an upperclassman.
Bullying? Ch'en frowned.
The boy was black and blue, his uniform rumpled and stained with blood. His eyes were full of tears.
"Yu Yachen! What did you do?" Ch'en immediately demanded.
"Long story short, he's been harassing me for two weeks."
Faced with the accusation, the white-haired girl simply turned off the faucet and shook the water from her gloves.
"Besides... you just fell, right?"
Yu Yachen turned to the beaten-up boy.
"Y-Yes! I fell! I fell all by myself! Please, don't tell the teachers!" the upperclassman cried out.
Ch'en's pupils contracted. She blocked Yu Yachen's path.
"What did you do? I'm telling the principal everything."
"Classmate, you seem to have misunderstood. I am the victim here."
Yu Yachen, though stopped, didn't seem annoyed. She just explained slowly.
"It was just self-defense. After all, I'm just a girl. It's normal to be bullied, right?"
"..."
Ch'en looked at the bruised boy on the floor, then at the unharmed Yu Yachen.
Who's bullying whom? Don't you have any self-awareness?
Just as Ch'en was rendered speechless, Yu Yachen suddenly leaned in, their noses almost touching. The sudden move made Ch'en jump back.
"Don't be nervous."
Yu Yachen stepped forward, her hand moving toward Ch'en's waist.
Ch'en's body went rigid. Her ears turned red, and she instinctively backed away, grabbing the other girl's wrist. "Wh-What are you doing!"
"Don't move."
Yu Yachen looked at her, expressionless. A pale-pink Stand suddenly appeared. Invisible hands, unseen by ordinary people, instantly pinned Ch'en's arms.
Ch'en's eyes widened. She couldn't move. "What are you doing?! This is a school!"
Before she could finish, the white-haired girl's hand continued to her waist. Her slender fingers lightly brushed Ch'en's sensitive side. The blue-haired girl's face flushed crimson.
"You!"
"Thanks."
A moment later, Yu Yachen let go. The water on her gloves was gone, wiped clean on Ch'en's uniform.
"Next time, bring me a tissue, classmate."
Before leaving, she stared at Ch'en, slightly puzzled.
"By the way, what was your name again?"
"?"
The blush on Ch'en's face faded, replaced by pure confusion. She watched the white-haired girl leave—she had even used the tip of her toe to hook the door open.
Looking at the wet spot on her uniform, it took a long moment for Ch'en to realize what had just happened.
A humiliating rage, nearly making her faint, surged up. Ch'en's face turned red again—this time, from anger.
If they weren't at school, Ch'en wanted to scream at that slowly departing figure:
"Yu Yachen! Damn you to hell!"
