Chapter 24 - Skye in Crisis!

After leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Xu Dan didn't head straight after Skye.

He wasn't sure if the "eyes" of S.H.I.E.L.D. were still following him.

So instead, he stopped by an upscale restaurant and had dinner with Liva.Only after that leisurely meal did he finally take out his phone and check Skye's location.

Then he told Liva to return to the company, while he quietly began his pursuit—alone.

Originally, Skye hadn't been far.But by now, that girl had already driven her van tens of thousands of miles away—and she'd barely stopped to rest!

Still, that was fine.If she drove herself all the way to some desolate wilderness… all the better.

Of course, Xu Dan wasn't about to do anything illegal—he wasn't that kind of fool.

Skye was driving a modified van—already slow by nature—and weighed down with extra electronics, it crawled like a tortoise.Xu Dan, on the other hand, was behind the wheel of a luxury sports car.His base speed alone completely crushed hers.

Even if she had a three-hour head start, it wouldn't matter.

But a woman's stamina wasn't limitless. After hours of nonstop flight, Skye's nerves and body were stretched to the breaking point.By now, she was completely exhausted.

Watching the blinking red dot on his car's GPS, Xu Dan couldn't help the smile that curved his lips.

The red dot had stopped moving.

GPS wasn't accurate down to the millimeter, of course. If the signal stopped, it didn't mean Skye had passed out motionless—it likely meant she'd pulled over to rest or eat.

A perfect chance to strike.

He eased the car out of the city, then suddenly hit the gas—the engine roared, and he shot forward like lightning.

Xu Dan's driving skills weren't quite professional-racer level, but he was still tearing up the road like a champ.

That came from his earlier physical enhancement. The process hadn't only improved his reflexes—it had sharpened his mind and expanded his perception.Even at high speed, everything around him seemed to move in slow motion, half-speed at most.

With that kind of focus, his driving skill had improved by sheer instinct.

Before sunset, Xu Dan finally reached a small town.

Compared to the bustling chaos of New York, this place was a quiet paradise.

But something felt off.

It was dusk—there should've been people out and about.Yet the streets were empty. Not a single soul in sight.

What the hell…?

The town wasn't poor; everything was tidy and well-kept.Except—there were tracks.

On the concrete road, thin layers of dust had been pressed into clear tire marks.

In a town like this, there shouldn't be commercial traffic—no convoys or delivery fleets. The tracks suggested several cars had recently sped through here, one after another.

Xu Dan's brow furrowed. He glanced at the GPS again—Skye's red dot was close, still somewhere within the town limits.

Could she be in trouble?

He rolled down the window and carefully drove toward her location.

Soon, he spotted the back end of a black SUV.Rounding the corner, he saw three of them—identical black off-road vehicles.

And just beyond them—Skye's modified van.

The van's rear doors hung open, and its electronic equipment was scattered across the ground.

"Skye's in trouble!"

Xu Dan's pulse spiked.

That girl named Skye was his target.Who had the guts to snatch away his prey?

He got out of the car slowly, eyes narrowing, and strode toward the three SUVs.

They were empty—no one inside. It looked like everyone had gone after Skye.

"In that case," Xu Dan muttered, "you boys won't be needing your batteries anymore."

His strength now was extraordinary—no weaker than Captain America himself.

He grabbed the hood of the first SUV and wrenched it open with brute force.Staring at the grimy guts inside, he grimaced, too lazy to fiddle with the wiring.

Instead, he tore a plank from a nearby wooden fence—and with a few sharp thrusts, smashed all three car batteries into scrap.

Satisfied, he closed the hoods neatly back into place.

Then he turned toward Skye's van.

There were signs of a struggle, but no blood. That meant it wasn't a murder—it was a capture attempt, like his own.

That won't do. I have to find her first.

Just then, from somewhere ahead came a gut-wrenching male scream—the kind of shriek that made every man's soul shrivel.

"Over there!"

"AAAHHH!!"

The man clutched his crotch and crumpled to the ground like a boiled shrimp.

At his feet lay a long wooden stick. The other end of that stick was firmly gripped by a young woman—

Skye.

Another man rushed forward, eyes going wide as he saw his companion's pain.A chill ran through his own groin.

"Shit! Kill that bitch!" he roared.

He drew a black pistol from his jacket—

"Jesk! Wait! You can't shoot her—she still owes us over fifty grand!" another man shouted, grabbing his arm.

"What, we're just gonna let that crazy slut run circles around us all day? We've been chasing her for over an hour in this goddamn dump!"

Before today, Jesk had never imagined a single woman could be this hard to catch.Everyone hated her guts by now—but they still couldn't pin her down!

"No, no, listen," the older man hissed, sweating. "I wanna kill her even more than you do. Not just kill her—I wanna have her first!"

"Fine," Jesk sneered. "Then you can have her corpse after I'm done!"

He pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The shot missed—only kicked up gravel at Skye's feet.

The older man exhaled in relief and quickly grabbed Jesk's arm again."Calm down, man! I'm the one who lent her the money—if you kill her, I'll have to answer to the boss! Better to take her alive, let her work it off. Then we all get something out of it, right? Don't worry, I already called the guys in the cars. They're flanking her from behind. We'll have that bitch in no time!"

Jesk's lips curled into a cold smile. He glanced at his fallen buddy, still writhing in pain.

"Heh. I don't care about your profits. I just want her to pay for my brother's loss."

"Yeah, yeah," the other man snickered. "Let her make it up to him real good!"

"Bullshit!" Jesk barked. "If she so much as touches him, I'll cut her into pieces and feed her to the dogs!"

"Uh… what?"

The truth was, Skye hadn't taken a loan from loan sharks at all. She'd just borrowed a little cash in a hurry—a few thousand dollars, maybe three grand total.

Barely a month's salary for most people.

But somehow, what had started as a simple short-term loan had turned into a nightmare of usury.
