The area that has become one of the many battlefields in this war was completely unrecognizable.
The once thriving woodland at the border of the Land of Fire had none of its previous natural beauty as it had now turned into a desolate warzone.
The once towering trees had been reduced to smoldering husks, their trunks splintered by the effects of explosive tags and fire jutsu.
The once-rich soil was now torn apart, cratered and uneven, soaked with muddy water and blood alike.
Smoke drifted lazily through the wreckage, carrying the scent of charred wood and burnt flesh.
Ash coated everything.
Through all these, the distant cries of wounded shinobi mixed with the endless patter of rain, a cruel reminder that the fighting never truly stopped.
Even when it looked like the clashes had died down for a brief moment, the aftereffects of war still lingered in the air, its presence thick and suffocating.
A couple distance from the battlefield, makeshift camps dotted this area of the forest, hastily constructed barricades of earth and wood providing what little shelter they could.
Shinobi moved in tight teams of threes, fours and fives wary of enemy ambushes as they moved around the camp with eyes hollow from exhaustion.
The medics worked tirelessly beneath the cover of tents, their hands stained crimson as they fought battles of their own against death itself.
Somewhere in the distance, another explosion rocked the earth, shaking loose what little foliage remained.
That was a sign of another battle.
Another fight for territory, intel or reasons that had long since lost their meaning.
The Land of Fire that was once home to lush greenery and warmth was becoming something else entirely.
Now, it was a graveyard waiting to be filled.
Thunder rumbled in the sky, though it was quickly drowned out by the sounds of jutsus exploding upon clash.
Somewhere in the area, a group of shinobi of the Land of Fire moved with speed as their forms blurred between broken trees and jagged rocks, using the ruined battlefield to their advantage.
Their opponents, a group of shinobi fitted in Iwa apparel, were relentless as they used their jutsus to their advantage, turning the ground beneath them into deadly weapons whenever they got the chance.
Iwagakure was a land of stones as far as the eyes could see with little to no vegetation or water body, hence their increased proficiency in Earth Style Release.
A masked Konoha Shinobi moved with expert stealth as he snuck up on one of the Iwa Shinobi pursuing the group of Konoha shinobi.
His kunai slashed across the Iwa-nin throat and disappeared before the body even hit the ground.
The group didn't seem to notice their teammate's death and remained in hot pursuit. One looked to the side and signalled to the shinobi beside him who nodded and went through a series of hand seals.
"Earth Release: Stone Pillar Prison!"
Thick walls of stone erupted from the ground, in an attempt to cage in the group of Konoha shinobi, and before they could react, an explosion from above rained jagged rock shards upon them.
"Scatter!"
They didn't need to be told that as they all immediately shot out of the way randomly.
One shinobi wasn't fast enough and the debris struck him, and before his scream, a boulder crushed him, cutting it short.
A Konoha nin who was quick enough to escape came to a halt atop a tree branch, his hands flashing through seals.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu!"
A massive swirling orb of flames shot out of his mouth and roared toward the enemy, the orb illuminated the battlefield with an orange glow, but before it could make contact an Iwa-nin countered immediately.
"Earth Release: Earth Wall!"
A thick barrier of earth rose just in time, absorbing the brunt of the flames.
But the Konoha nin was already anticipating that as two more shinobi lunged forward from behind the smoke screen created by the explosion.
The Iwa-nins barely had time to react before one of them was impaled through the chest with a sword, coughing up blood as he fell backward.
"You bastar-!" Before he could complete his sentence, an explosion tag was placed on his jacket by Konoha-nin who stepped on him and jumped away.
As he did, he formed a one handed seal.
"Katsu."
BOOM
The explosion shook the earth but that wasn't enough to make the other pause to access the situation as doing so would be giving their opponents the opening to attack.
And so the battle raged on.
On another area of the battlefield, a Konoha sensor-nin crouched behind cover, whispering into his radio. "Squad Three, hold your position! Reinforcements are coming from the east!"
But his warning came too late.
The ground beneath him trembled.
"Earth Release: Subterranean Spike!"
Jagged spikes of earth shot up from below, piercing through him and another shinobi beside him.
Their bodies jerked as they hung lifelessly, their blood running down the spikes to form a puddle beneath them.
A figure clad in a dark red flak jacket flickered onto the roof of the shelter, an Iwa-nin with a cold, calculating gaze.
"Konoha rats… you're always so predictable."
Before he could finish his taunt, a blur descended upon him.
The masked Konoha-nin from earlier struck like a viper, his kunai flashing toward the Iwa jonin's throat but the enemy was just as skilled; he twisted at the last second, raising his forearm to block as metal met metal with sparks flying as they clashed.
Without so much as exchanging a word with each other, they clashed again, their battle becoming a blur of high-speed exchanges, neither willing to give an inch.
The two moved with deadly precision and intent to kill, their bodies turning to mere blurs as they clashed.
Kunai met kunai, sparks flying with each deflection as they tested each other's skills, neither gaining an upper hand.
They clashed before separating, creating a gap between themselves as they came to a pause
The Iwa-nin, clicked his tongue in irritation before slamming his hands into the ground.
"Earth Release: Earth Spear Avalanche!"
The ground trembled violently as a massive section of earth tore itself free, breaking into a wave of jagged spears cascading toward the masked Konoha jonin.
But he was already moving. With a flicker, his form flickered out of existence just as the wave of spears swept over.
A split second later, he reappeared behind the Iwa jonin, kunai thrusting forward in a ruthless strike toward the enemy's spine but the Iwa jonin reacted in time.
"Earth Release: Petrified Skin!"
His skin darkened as the kunai skidded off with a metallic screech.
Using the opening, the Iwa jonin spun, delivering a brutal backhand to the masked jonin's face sending him skidding across the battlefield.
The masked jonin barely caught his footing before flipping back onto a broken tree stump. He exhaled slowly, his grip on his kunai tightening.
This opponent wasn't just your average shinobi. 'A Jonin. An experienced one at that.' He thought and rubbed his chin. 'But so am I.'
The Iwa jonin smirked, wiping a streak of blood from his chin. "Damn Konoha scum. You're quite fast," he admitted. "But that won't matter. The earth itself is my weapon."
Slamming his foot down, he activated another jutsu.
"Earth Release: Landslide Burial!"
A surge of chakra pulsed through the ground. Suddenly, the earth beneath the tree the Konoha-nin was standing on turned into a sinkhole of shifting debris meant to swallow him alive.
For a moment, it seemed like he had no escape.
But then-
"Fire Release: Blazing Step!"
Flames erupted beneath his feet, propelling him into the air just as the ground caved in. Using the momentum to twist midair, he formed a quick set of seals before exhaling.
"Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Fire!"
A volley of small fireballs shot toward the Iwa jonin in unpredictable, erratic arcs.
The Iwa-nin narrowed his eyes before reacting with a series of hand seals following which he slammed his hand on the ground.
"Earth Release: Moving Earth Core!"
The ground beneath him sank suddenly, pulling him down just enough for the flames to sail harmlessly over his head.
But the masked nin seemed to already be predicting this as the moment the Iwa jonin resurfaced, he was there, kunai already in motion.
"Got you."
The kunai buried itself just below the Iwa jonin's ribs, piercing through his side.
"Guh! You bastard." The Iwa-nin groaned and swung his fist at the Konoha-nin who dodged and jumped away.
The Iwa-nin clutched his side as blood oozed from the wound, staining his flak jacket as pain tore through his body.
He staggered, but years of battlefield experience kept him from collapsing outright.
He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to jump away despite the agony, but the Konoha jonin was quickly on him with another strike.
The masked shinobi aimed a strike at the Iwanin mid air which he deflected but the movement caused a reaction, eliciting a strangled gasp from his enemy.
And without hesitation, he pivoted, his other hand flashing forward with a second strike aimed at the Iwa jonin's throat.
The veteran fighter barely had time to react, jerking his body away at the last second but the kunai slashed across his neck, not deep enough to kill but enough to tear through skin on his neck.
His breath hitched.
He knew it.
He was done.
The masked shinobi wasted no time and quickly followed up with a brutal kick to the wounded man's chest.
The force sent the Iwa jonin stumbling backward before his body finally gave in, crumpling onto the soaked earth.
For a moment, there was only silence between them, save for the sound of the rain pattering against the battlefield ground.
The Iwa jonin's breathing grew shallow, his vision blurring as his strength ebbed away.
With his last bit of willpower, he exhaled one final, bitter breath.
"Tch… Konoha…Sc-"
Then, he stilled.
The masked Konoha jonin flicked the blood off his kunai before sheathing it.
There was no satisfaction in the kill, only the grim acceptance that one less enemy meant one less threat to his village.
But the battle wasn't over.
Far from it.
Turning sharply, his gaze swept across the ruined forest, where chaos continued to unfold all over the place.
…
…
Near the remnants of a broken bridge, a squad of Konoha shinobi were locked in a brutal engagement with an advancing Iwa unit.
A Konoha nin barely dodged an incoming boulder launched by an enemy shinobi, rolling to the side before retaliating with a kunai throw.
The weapon was fitted with an explosive tag which struck its mark, embedding itself into an Iwa shinobi's shoulder before detonating in a loud explosion tearing the Iwa nin to bits and pieces as his flesh, bones and blood splattered across the field.
Not far from them, a pair of Konoha medics were desperately tending to the wounded under the fragile cover of a shattered tree.
Their hands worked swiftly, sealing gaping wounds with threads and healing it up with what little chakra they could spare, their faces tight with determination despite the overwhelming pressure.
Further back, an Iwa squadron was preparing to break through the defensive line Konoha-nin had set up, their leader barking out orders.
"Push forward! Don't let them regroup!"
A group of Konoha shinobi moved to intercept, but the Iwa-nin were already forming hand seals.
"Earth Release: Stone Lance Barrage!"
Countless sharpened rock spears erupted from the ground, hurtling toward the group of Konoha-nin like deadly spears.
…
…
The battlefield was an unending storm of jutsu, clash of steel, and blood.
And the war was nowhere nearing its conclusion.
