Chapter 358 - Torture Cell

The silence that stretched between them was no longer the heavy calm of a finished dungoen; it was the suffocating, motionless pressure that precedes an absolute catastrophe.

Aefia slowly lifted her head. The shadows covering her face partly, revealing garnet eyes that burned with a cold, terrifying luminosity. All traces of the quiet, domestic mother who had laughed over strawberry cake only hours ago were completely gone.

In her place stood the unyielding Guardian of Death, a survivor of war whose quiet fury could flatten realms.

"I accept," Aefia said, her voice dropping into a flat, icy register that sent a shiver down Francesca's spine.

Francesca let out a breathless, tearful sigh of relief, taking a small step forward. "Sofia... oh, thank goodness—"

"I accept, but under one explicit condition," Aefia interrupted smoothly, sliding Spectrum back into its sheath with a crisp snip. She took a slow, deliberate step toward the missing Guardian, her dark green cloak fluttering behind her like a shroud.

"If a single hair on Lyra's head is touched—if they so much as breathe in her direction—I will tear the Torture Cell apart brick by brick. And if anyone in that sanctum attempts to lay a hand on me..." Aefia paused, stopping inches from Francesca, her garnet eyes piercing right through her.

"...I will not hesitate to draw blood. I will execute every high councilor sitting in those gilded chairs before they even finish reading their demands."

Aefia leaned down a bit, looking deep into Francesca's eyes. "I know I will make many hate me if I said it out loud... But... 'they should have known my personality better', is all I can say. And then I will just... Cut."

Francesca's face paled, her hands wringing frantically. "Sofia, please, you must understand! The High Council doesn't want an all-out war with you—they simply wish to discuss your heritage! If you enter with your blade drawn, you will only validate their fears—"

"I don't care about their fears," Aefia cut her off, her tone sharp and completely devoid of mercy. "There are no negotiations left, Francesca. In fact, why don't we streamline this entire process?"

A bitter smirk curved Aefia's lips.

"Why don't I make the first move? I walk into their sanctum, locate the leader of the Torture Cell, and plunge my blade straight through her heart. That way, this entire pathetic 'invitation' resolves itself immediately. No pending threats, no leverage, and no one threatening my daughter ever again. That seems like a far better choice for me regardless."

Francesca gasped, her pale blue eyes widening in genuine terror.

She knew Aefia's history. She knew this was no empty boast—this was a woman who had executed usurpers, ended planar horrors, and bled through continent-spanning campaigns without flinching. If Aefia decided to assassinate the High Council, the void would drown in blood.

"No! Please, do not do that!" Francesca pleaded desperately, raising her hands in surrender. "I... I will personally guarantee Lyra's safety! I will anchor my own domain over her home while you are away! No one from the Torture Cell will step foot on the southern coast—I swear it on Seraphina's memory!"

Aefia stared at her for a long, grueling moment, judging the sincerity behind the missing Guardian's tears. Finally, with a sharp, dismissive exhale, Aefia patted the inner pocket of her cloak, re-centering herself around the warmth of the crayon drawing resting against her heart.

"Take me to them," Aefia commanded quietly.

Francesca nodded hastily, bowing her head in relief. She raised her slender, white-gloved hand, weaving a complex sequence of azure and silver light into the dead air. Space tore open like wet parchment, revealing a towering rift that pulsed with forbidden magic.

Without a single second of hesitation, Aefia stepped into the shimmering void.

The light of the dungeon vanished instantly, replaced by the imposing, sterile grandeur of the Torture Cell's hidden palace. Towering holographic pillars reached up toward a sky choked with dark clouds, and massive stone archways lined a hall built entirely by the thorns of the rose bushes nearby.

Aefia stood at the center of the grand marble foyer, her dark green cloak settling around her boots, her hand resting comfortably on the hilt of her sword.

Francesca stepped up beside Aefia, her long white-and-blue hair fluttering as the dimensional portal dissolved into thin air behind them. The grand hall of the Torture Cell palace smelled faintly of damp earth, royal flowers, and a faint trace of animalistic stench.

"Sovereign Sofia," Francesca murmured softly, her silver-gloved hand hovering near Aefia's sleeve without quite touching it. "Before we step any further into the inner sanctum, there are a few things you must keep in mind. Your position here is extremely delicate. Please... do not provoke the guards, and do not speak harshly to the servants."

Aefia didn't turn her head, her garnet eyes coldly tracking the distant arches draped in thick, writhing rose vines. "I am not here to make friends, Francesca."

"I know," Francesca whispered frantically, her voice hushed as they began walking down the endless marble corridor.

"But the people who reside within these walls operate under strict, absolute hierarchy. If you display open hostility before you even reach the High Council, they will treat it as a declaration of war. You are in their territory now, Sofia. A single misstep could give them the pretext they need to execute their contingencies."

Aefia let out a low, almost imperceptible scoff, her left hand remaining casually draped over the pommel of Spectrum. She kept her pace measured and unhurried, her dark green cloak sweeping rhythmically over the stone floorboards.

As they passed through the grand colonnade, figures began to emerge from the shadows. Sentinel guards clad in matte-black armor and servants carrying gilded trays paused in their duties, their gazes snapping directly toward Aefia.

First, a ripple of sheer, unadulterated surprise washed over their faces as they recognized the silver-edged black hair and the unmistakable garnet eyes.

Then, almost instantaneously, that surprise curdled into something far darker—a profound, bitter look of deep betrayal.

The guards tightened their grips on their halberds, their knuckles turning white, while the servants lowered their eyes with cold, rigid contempt.

It was a look reserved for someone who had once walked these very halls, someone who had belonged to their inner circle, only to turn around and shatter their world from the inside out.

Aefia noticed the lingering hostility, but her expression remained completely impassive.

She didn't grant them so much as a second glance, keeping her eyes fixed straight ahead on the towering double doors of the throne room in the distance.

Beside her, Francesca kept her arms folded neatly behind her back, her posture radiating an ethereal composure. But beneath her smooth exterior, the Guardian of Peace was secretly drowning in a tempest of anxious thoughts.

I thought I could maintain control, Francesca thought to herself, her pale blue eyes flickering subtly toward Aefia's side profile. I truly believed I could stand before Seraphina's daughter with absolute poise... but I was wrong.

When Francesca had first learned of Aefia's existence, a wave of genuine, overwhelming excitement had washed over her. The thought of Seraphina's bloodline continuing, of a tiny girl carrying that legendary lineage into a peaceful era, had briefly filled her hollow heart with warmth.

Yet, when she had finally confronted Aefia in that sealed dungeon, the sheer, ruthless terror that erupted from the young Guardian of Death had thoroughly terrified her. The raw, terrifying fury in Aefia's eyes when Lyra was mentioned was something Francesca had never anticipated—not even from Seraphina at her most unyielding.

I completely exposed my fear to her, Francesca lamented silently, her chest tightening with regret. I panicked. I let my composure shatter, and in doing so, I ruined my image in front of the Third Aethalgard.

To Francesca, Aefia wasn't just a former crown princess or a retired warrior; she held the title of the Third Aethalgard—a force of nature whose alignment could tip the balance of existence itself.

Francesca had desperately wanted to secure Aefia as a true, unshakeable ally for the trials that lay ahead in the higher realms.

Instead, she had backed the young mother into a corner, forcing her to reveal a side so terrifyingly lethal that any hope of easy camaraderie had been burned to ash.

As they reached the base of the grand marble stairs leading to the throne room, Francesca took a deep, steadying breath, her eyes locking onto the heavy, thorn-encrusted doors.

It doesn't matter now, Francesca realized with a sudden, chilling clarity. Regardless of what happens inside that chamber... Sofia is not someone I can afford to cross ever again.

Francesca knew how the tides of war turned.

She knew Aefia's terrifying record of turning impossible odds into total, absolute slaughters. Typically speaking, if Aefia survived this confrontation and won this round against this High Council—which Francesca secretly knew she would—Aefia would ascend to a position far higher and more dangerous than the Leader of the Torture Cell herself.

Defying Aefia now, or playing two-faced games with her family's safety, wouldn't just be a strategic mistake.

It would be equivalent to walking up to the Guardian of Death and willingly offering her own neck to the blade in the near future.

Her hand came up to rest against the large double doors. A sigh escaping her mouth as she hung her head low.

"We have arrived," Francesca spoke aloud, her voice regaining a fraction of its former, silver-bell calm as she gestured toward the massive doors. "The High Council awaits you, Sofia."

The heavy, thorn-encrusted doors groaned as they parted, revealing a vast, dimly lit sanctuary that reeked of dark magic, crushed velvet, and suffocating authority.

Standing at the threshold, Aefia didn't flinch. She stepped forward with slow, deliberate grace, her dark green cloak sweeping behind her like a shroud, her gloved hand resting comfortably over the pommel of Spectrum.

At the far end of the grand hall, resting atop an elevated marble dais, sat a throne crafted entirely from polished metallic black and woven gold. Seated upon it was a woman of striking, fatal beauty—the Torture Cell leader.

Her moon-silver hair cascaded down her back like liquid night, and resting atop her brow was a crown forged of clear white diamonds, tipped with jagged, gold stones that caught the dim light like fresh embers. Her fingers ended in long, holographic claw-like nails that tapped rhythmically against the golden armrest.

As her sharp, golden eyes locked onto Aefia, a slow, predatory smirk curved her lips.

Flanking either side of the dais were six high councilors—devils in human disguise, clad in opulent robes that barely concealed the dark, writhing miasma pulsing beneath their skin. They watched Aefia's approach with cold, ravenous amusement.

So this is the leader that has been lurking in this unreachable domain, Aefia thought to herself, her garnet eyes coolly evaluating the threat of the room in a single sweep. A king on a throne built of thorned roses... how delightfully cliche.

Aefia stopped at the base of the dais, standing straight and unyielding, her posture radiating an absolute refusal to submit.

The Supreme Sovereign leaned back, resting her chin on her clawed hand, her golden eyes glinting with mock disapproval.

"Sovereign Sofia," her voice echoed through the hall, smooth and heavy like honey laced with poison. "You stand before the High Council of the Torture Cell. It is customary for visitors—especially uninvited guests—to drop to their knees and bow."

Aefia let out a low hum. A soft smile curved her lips as her garnet eyes flashed with icy defiance.

"I am the Guardian of Death and the Third Aethalgard," Aefia replied, her voice ringing out clear and even through the silent hall. "By the laws of Domain and Realm alignments... it is you who should be dropping to your knees before me."

A silence loud enough to hear thread snapping somewhere distant settled upon them. The High Council gripped their weapons while looking at their Sovereign for confirmation. The woman merely chuckled—a low, melodic sound that carried no warmth.

"Arrogant child," the Sovereign purred.

Without warning, the woman rose from her black-and-gold throne. In a blur of dark motion that defied human perception, she vanished from the top of the dais and materialized directly in front of Aefia.

Before Aefia could draw her blade, the Sovereign slammed a heavy, clawed hand onto Aefia's shoulder. The sheer, crushing pressure of her passive domain drove down like an anvil, forcing Aefia's left knee to strike the marble floor with a heavy, echoing thud.

She leaned down, her face inches from Aefia's ear, her clawed fingers digging into the fabric of Aefia's green cloak.

"I do not like repeating myself, little Guardian," she whispered dangerously. "Here, you obey."

Aefia didn't scream. She didn't even wince.

Instead, while kneeling on the cold floor, Aefia's garnet eyes narrowed into pitch-black slits.

Before the Sovereign could retract her hand, Aefia reached up with blinding speed. Her own fingernails extended instantly, slicing cleanly across the back of the Sovereign's wrist.

Slash.

A thin, dark line of blood burst across the Sovereign's pale skin.

The Sovereign froze, her golden eyes widening in genuine shock as she hastily pulled her hand back, taking a sharp step away from the kneeling young woman.

Aefia slowly rose back to her feet, casually dusting off her dark green cloak as if nothing had happened. She lifted her head, looking the leader of the Torture Cell dead in the eye with an expression of icy, polite mock-apology.

"Before stepping through those doors, I set an explicit term with your employee, Francesca," Aefia spoke, her voice smooth, steady, and terrifyingly calm.

"If anyone in this sanctum attempted to harm me, I would not hesitate to draw blood. Consider that cut a down payment on your disrespect... and please, do not mind it."

The Sovereign stared at the thin, stinging cut on her wrist. Slowly, a wide grin broke across her face, her eyes flashing with a mixture of dark delight and sudden, sharp realization. She brought her wounded wrist up to her lips, softly licking away the drop of dark blood.

The Guardian of Death... the Sovereign thought to herself, her heart racing with an intoxicating rush of adrenaline.

From the rumors, they described her as a ruthless monster. To think... this fierce, venomous creature was once hailed as the 'bright future of the empire.' I am almost jealous.

She took a step forward, her golden eyes locked and reflecting Aefia's unyielding form—taking in the dark hair, the silver-edges, and the absolute absence of fear in those garnet eyes.

Handling this fierce little poison butterfly is going to take far more than simple coaxing or installing fear, the Sovereign realized, her gaze darkening as she subtly licked the sting of the Death magic lingering in her wound.

Oh well... This shall be fun.
