Chapter 20: Building the Queendom
Winter settled over the northern territory like a harsh master demanding tribute in blood and endurance, and Paul discovered that ruling was harder than fighting in ways that no vision could have prepared him for.
"Fighting has rules. Kill or be killed, win or lose, live or die. Governance is just... endless decisions where every choice makes someone angry."
Three months collapsed into a blur of administrative necessity and strategic planning. Paul and Lagertha divided responsibilities with the efficiency of people who'd learned to trust each other's competencies—she handled warrior training and external threats while he managed internal economy and the kind of intelligence gathering that kept small territories alive in a world of expanding kingdoms.
The system store became Paul's secret weapon in ways that transcended combat. While Lagertha drilled shield-maidens in the frozen training yard, Paul revolutionized their economy through careful applications of supernatural commerce.

Refined iron flowed to local blacksmiths, transforming their crude weapons into instruments that could stand against anything produced in the great forges of Kattegat. Quality textiles from distant lands established trade relationships that brought silver flowing into their territory. Preserved foods meant their people could survive winter sieges that would starve other settlements into submission.
"Forty percent increase in territorial wealth in three months. Not bad for a man who arrived here knowing nothing about Viking economics."
Paul used Success Rate Analysis for everything—which fields would yield the best crops, which traders were trustworthy, which warriors showed genuine loyalty versus opportunistic allegiance. The constant application of supernatural insight to mundane problems made him indispensable as an administrator while freeing Lagertha to focus on what she did best.
"Which fields yield the best crops this spring?" Paul asked the system during a particularly tedious meeting with local farmers.

The farmers looked at him with something approaching worship when his recommendations consistently produced better harvests than their traditional methods. Paul felt like a fraud taking credit for agricultural wisdom that came from a supernatural interface, but results spoke louder than methodology in a world where winter meant starvation for the unprepared.
Their partnership deepened through shared governance in ways that mere romance couldn't have achieved. They governed as equals, fought as partners, and slept in the same bed while planning solutions to problems that would determine whether their people lived or died.
"This is what partnership actually means. Not just attraction or convenience, but building something together that neither could create alone."
The tests came in the form of three neighboring jarls who viewed Lagertha's new territory with the particular interest that wolves showed toward wounded deer. Orm controlled lands to the east, Sigurd commanded a small fleet that raided coastal settlements, and Thorstein ruled mountains to the north with the brutal pragmatism of someone who'd learned that weakness invited death.
Paul's Daily Visions revealed each threat before it materialized.
The eastern farms burned in his dreams three days before Orm's raiders crossed the border. Paul positioned warriors in careful ambush, turning what should have been easy plunder into a massacre that sent survivors limping home with stories of supernatural foresight that made their enemies untouchable.
Sigurd's ships appeared on the horizon exactly when Paul's visions had predicted, only to find shore defenses that seemed designed specifically to counter their attack patterns. Arrows flew from positions that anticipated their landing sites, spike traps waited where they'd planned to beach their vessels, and warriors struck from directions that turned tactical advantage into catastrophic vulnerability.
Thorstein's winter assault came with the confidence of someone who'd calculated that snow and cold would make defense impossible. But Paul had stockpiled supplies in quantities that defied normal planning, positioned reserves in locations that seemed random until the attack revealed their strategic perfection, and waited out the siege with resources that stretched longer than any reasonable preparation should have allowed.
Three victories in three months, each achieved with minimal losses and maximum psychological impact. Word spread through the northern territories like wildfire—"Lagertha's seer sees all enemies coming. Her lands are protected by gods who whisper the future in his ear."
"Not gods. Just really good data analysis and the ability to see tomorrow's headlines before they're written."
The rivals stopped testing them after Thorstein's failed siege. Paul's precognition had made their territory seem invincible, which was almost as valuable as actually being invincible and considerably more sustainable.
But the most significant evolution came in the training yard, where Paul began coaching Lagertha's warriors using enhanced perception that turned combat instruction into supernatural education.
Paul activated Odin's Whisper during sparring sessions, using those two minutes of perfect awareness to identify and correct flaws in real-time.
"Your right side drops when you swing high!" Paul called to Astrid as she engaged another shield-maiden, his voice carrying the authority of someone who could see the opening before her opponent did. "Compensate with footwork, not just arm position!"
The warriors improved with startling rapidity. Having someone who could see their mistakes before they made them was like training with a coach who'd already witnessed every possible error and knew exactly how to prevent it. Paul's instruction created fighters who moved with confidence born of corrected technique and tactical awareness that bordered on prescient.
Bjorn trained extensively with Paul, their relationship shifting from suspicious tolerance to something approaching brotherhood. The young warrior had inherited his mother's tactical intelligence and his father's aggressive instincts, but Paul's coaching refined those natural gifts into something that made even veteran fighters take notice.
"You're getting good at this," Paul observed after a particularly successful sparring session. "The teaching, I mean."
"You're getting good at learning," Paul replied, watching Bjorn execute a combination that would have impressed seasoned raiders. "Your mother was right—you have instincts that can't be taught, just refined."
"So you're my stepfather now?" Bjorn asked with the particular directness of youth confronting adult complexities.
"Technically?" Paul said, uncertain how Viking family structures handled such arrangements.
"This is weird."
"Extremely."
But despite the awkwardness, Paul could see respect growing in Bjorn's eyes—not the automatic deference children showed authority figures, but the earned regard that came from demonstrated competence and genuine investment in his development.
Lagertha watched Paul work with her warriors and her son, and Paul could see understanding crystallizing in her expression. He wasn't trying to rule through her or establish his own power base at her expense. He was building HER queendom with her, using his abilities to strengthen her position rather than undermine it.
"Trust. Real trust, earned through consistency and results rather than demanded through titles or tradition."
The marriage ceremony came at midwinter, conducted before the gods with the private intimacy of two people who'd already committed to each other in every way that mattered. The formal vows simply acknowledged what their partnership had already proven—they were stronger together than either could be alone.

Spring arrived with a messenger from Kattegat bearing Ragnar's summons for summer campaign planning. Paul read the formal invitation with mixed emotions—pride at returning as an equal rather than a follower, apprehension about reentangling himself in Ragnar's increasingly complex political web, and anticipation at finally showing his former patron what he'd built.
"Time to go back. Time to show Ragnar what happens when someone chooses Lagertha over him."
That night, as they prepared for departure, Lagertha found Paul standing at their hall's entrance, looking south toward Kattegat with an expression she couldn't quite read.
"Second thoughts?" she asked quietly.
"About us? Never." Paul turned to meet her eyes. "About going back? Constantly. But showing Ragnar what we've accomplished feels... necessary."
"Vindictive?"
"Absolutely. But I've learned to embrace my petty impulses when they align with strategic necessity."
Lagertha's laugh carried the warmth of someone who'd found a partner whose flaws complemented her strengths rather than competing with them.

They would ride to Kattegat at the head of fifty warriors, and Paul would take vicious satisfaction in Ragnar's expression when he understood what he'd thrown away and what Paul had claimed.
"Forward is still the only direction that matters. But now we're moving from a position of strength."
