"I didn't even realize I'd become this powerful…" Kaoru Tsubasa sighed, staring at the glowing property panel before him.
Not long after, he arrived at the East Blue aboard his ship. Earlier, he'd sent one of his physical clones ahead to secretly observe Monkey D. Luffy—so he already knew Luffy's whereabouts the moment he reviewed those memories.
According to what his clone had seen, Luffy was currently drifting inside a wooden barrel.
Kaoru couldn't help but shake his head. "You're setting out to become a pirate… and that's your ship? A barrel?"
Amused, he directed his vessel toward the nearest merchant ship to where Luffy's barrel was floating.
On the merchant ship, a short, chubby man in a white shirt stammered nervously, "Th-this person is the most—"
Before he could finish, a large, overweight woman wielding a spiked mace interrupted sharply.
Kaoru recognized both of them immediately. The timid man was Coby, a boy who dreamed of becoming a Marine Admiral. The woman was Alvida, the first pirate Luffy would ever defeat.
And the cheerful boy wearing a red vest and a straw hat beside Coby—there was no mistaking it—Monkey D. Luffy himself.
"The ugliest old hag!"
Luffy's words made Coby's jaw drop. It was something the boy had always wanted to say but never dared.
As the words left his mouth, Alvida's expression darkened like a storm cloud. No one—especially not a weak cabin boy—had ever insulted her to her face. Even her crew froze in terror.
"Please don't drag us down with you, Coby…" one muttered under his breath.
But Luffy? He simply burst into laughter. "Hahahahaha!"
Kaoru chuckled quietly as he hovered in the air above them.
"What did you say, brat?!" Alvida roared, her mace trembling with rage.
Coby clenched his fists. "I'm going to become a Marine—and I'll arrest scum like you!"
That declaration finally broke through his fear.
"Well said, kid," Kaoru said, descending from the sky with a calm smile.
"Eh?!" Coby's eyes went wide at the sight of a man literally floating down. "Th-thank you, sir!"
"Whoa!" Luffy's jaw dropped. "You can fly? That's awesome! Are you a Devil Fruit user like me?"
Kaoru laughed. "Nope. I'm not a Devil Fruit user."
Luffy grinned, circling him with wide-eyed curiosity.
Alvida, however, was fuming. "Who the hell are you, anyway?!"
"Me?" Kaoru tilted his head. "I don't think I owe you that answer."
"Why, you—!" she roared, swinging her massive mace straight at him.
Kaoru pulled Luffy in front of him without hesitation. "You're up."
The weapon slammed into Luffy's head with a loud thud.
Coby screamed, "No! Mr. Luffy!"
But Luffy just smiled his carefree grin. "That won't work on me."
"What?!"
"I'm a rubber man!"
"Gomu Gomu no… Pistol!"
Luffy's fist stretched back, then snapped forward like a slingshot—sending Alvida flying off the ship with a crash.
Her crew stared in stunned silence. Coby gawked. Kaoru smirked.
"This is definitely a pirate's world," he murmured.
"Hey, what's your name?" Luffy asked, brushing himself off.
"Kaoru Tsubasa," he replied. "You can just call me Kaoru."
"Kaoru, huh? Be my crew member!"
"Your crew?" Kaoru smiled faintly, touching down on the deck.
"Yeah! I'm the man who'll become the Pirate King!" Luffy declared, spreading his arms with that familiar, fearless grin.
Alvida's crew gasped. Even Coby froze.
"Pirate King? Roger's treasure? You're aiming for that?" Kaoru asked.
"Yep! But first, I need a navigator, a cook, and a musician!" Luffy said, counting on his fingers.
Kaoru chuckled. "Alright then. I'll join you."
"Really?! Awesome!" Luffy jumped with excitement.
Kaoru reached into his coat, pulling out a bounty poster and slapping it onto the deck.
"My name is Kaoru Tsubasa. They call me the Speed Sword Ghost. My bounty is fifty-three billion berries." He smiled faintly. "Please take care of me, Captain."
"Fifty-three billion?!" Coby almost fainted.
Luffy scratched his cheek. "Cool! I don't have a bounty yet, but someday mine'll be higher than yours!"
Coby stammered, "Mr. Luffy! D-do you realize what that means? Even the Four Emperors' bounties aren't that high!"
Luffy blinked. "Eh, really? Doesn't matter."
Kaoru sighed. "He definitely didn't get any of that."
Soon after, Luffy and Coby stole a small boat and set off toward the next island. Kaoru, not wanting to squeeze onto their tiny vessel, flew leisurely above them.
"Mr. Luffy," Coby asked as he rowed, "if you want to find One Piece, you'll have to go to the Grand Line—the Pirate's Graveyard, right?"
"The Grand Line isn't that scary," Kaoru said, gliding down beside them.
Coby nodded quickly. "Of course you'd say that, Mr. Kaoru—you're a pirate with a bounty of fifty-three billion berries!"
Luffy looked at his straw hat, determination shining in his eyes. "I don't care if it's dangerous—even if I die, I'll go. That's why I need strong crewmates!"
He looked up. "What about that 'Pirate Hunter' guy?"
"Zoro?" Kaoru asked.
"I heard he's been captured by the Marines," Coby said nervously. "He's being held at a base near Shells Town."
"What? So weak?" Luffy pouted.
Kaoru shook his head. "No. He was arrested for saving a little girl. That's the kind of man he is."
Luffy grinned. "He sounds like a good guy! Let's go get him!"
Coby blinked. "R-really? I thought he was some monster!"
"You're too naive, kid," Kaoru said gently.
"Alright! Set sail for Shells Town!" Luffy cheered, raising his hands.
When they finally arrived, the town was small—its most striking feature being the massive Marine base that loomed like a fortress.
"Where's that Zoro guy?" Luffy asked aloud.
At the mention of the name, the townspeople instantly backed away, avoiding eye contact.
"Looks like we shouldn't talk about him here," Coby whispered.
"They're scared of getting dragged into trouble," Kaoru explained. "This town's under Captain Morgan's thumb. Zoro's the only one who dared to defy him."
"Then we'll go see for ourselves," Luffy said, already walking toward the Marine base.
"Kirby, didn't you say you wanted to join the Marines?" Kaoru teased.
"Y-yeah!" Coby's voice trembled. "Maybe Zoro's being held there!"
Soon they reached the gates, emblazoned with the word MARINE in bold blue letters.
"This is it!" Coby's eyes welled with tears. "I'm finally here!"
But Luffy and Kaoru ignored him and climbed up the wall—Luffy with his bare hands, Kaoru floating effortlessly beside him.
"Man, your power's so convenient!" Luffy grumbled.
Kaoru smirked. "I'll make you one later."
"Really?! That's awesome—whoa!" Luffy almost fell off.
"Mr. Luffy, Mr. Kaoru, what are you two doing up there?!" Coby called from below.
"Is that Zoro?" Luffy asked, peering over the wall.
"Yeah, I think so," Kaoru replied.
Coby climbed up after them—and froze.
There, tied to a wooden post in the courtyard, stood a man wearing green pants, a white shirt, and a green bandana—Roronoa Zoro, the Pirate Hunter.
