Chapter 11 - Not The Right Time

Since Demi did not believe his theory that her fiance was one among the six individuals, Jamie chose to end that topic and brought up something else that was on his mind.

"So the reason I came here..." He began and saw her drop that frown and look at him with curiosity once again.

"Are you fine?" He asked with a look of concern now appearing on his face.

After that woman, Maya Brie, had barged into their room, announcing that Demi should break the engagement off, Jamie had not gotten involved since he knew his friend was capable of handling brats like her.

However, this did not mean that everything that had taken place yesterday had not affected her.

He had, in fact, hoped to have this conversation with his best friend last night but she had fallen asleep on the way back and hence he had to put this matter aside until now.

He had brought her up to her room and laid her in bed last night and then gone back to continue drinking with the remaining members of his band downstairs.

This was also to ensure that they did not make too much noise, to avoid waking Demi up from her sleep.

Their drinking contest had continued until late in the night and only in the early hours of the morning did they fall asleep.

Jamie, who had a high tolerance for liquor was just fine when he woke up the next morning, though he had downed many bottles only a few hours ago.

The first thing he had done after waking up was rush to Demi and check on how she was doing after everything that had happened.

That was why he had shown up here and was finally having that conversation with her.

"I need to stop drinking on an empty stomach." Demi responded, implying that other than feeling queasy thanks to the liquor from last night, she was doing just fine.

"You know that is not what I'm asking about!" Jamie rolled his eyes in exasperation.

He was asking about the incident concerning her fiancé and that woman named Maya Brie.

However, the answer he received had nothing related to them so he was annoyed when he saw her deflecting his question.

Knowing that she could not avoid this conversation, Demi sighed and nodded her head.

"I'm fine.... He can be with whoever he wants." She added to assure him that she truly did not mind that her fiance had another woman by his side.

What she did mind, though, was the fact that this woman had shown up in her presence and spouted nothing but nonsense with that "holier than thou" attitude of hers.

The actress was close to an engaged man and yet was pretending to be high and mighty before her, the rightful fiancee.

This was the only reason she had even thought of contacting that man and hence had dropped him a text, asking him to control his woman.

She had even sent him the location of the club so that his men could come and take her away.

It was not the first time that some strange woman had bragged about being close to him but it most certainly was the first time someone had tried to order her around in that way.

Therefore, she had asked him to rein his women in and ensure that they do not offend her before she lost her calm.

"Like I even want to stay engaged to him!" She scoffed when she thought of the unnecessary nonsense she had heard from the actress.

Hearing these words, Jamie frowned at her and leaned closer to her face.

"Then why won't you just break this engagement off?" He held her shoulders and shook them, trying to shake some sense into her thick skull.

Demi felt her stomach churn once again thanks to his rapid movements and smacked him across the face to put an end to his stupidity.

Grabbing his throbbing cheek, Jamie pouted at his best friend who never hesitated to strike him.

"It's not the right time." She replied while pressing her stomach to calm the waves he had created earlier.

These vague and mysterious words he had heard too many times in the past but never could make sense of them.

"Then what's the right time to end things with him?" Jamie retorted, feeling indignant for his friend's sake.

"I don't even know why the two of you got engaged when you don't even like each other!" He grumbled, uttering similar words to what that woman had spewed last night.

"You don't have to like someone to stay engaged with them." Demi spoke in a gentle tone as she cupped the cheek she had smacked, rubbing it to soothe the pain.

"And you know exactly why I agreed to this engagement." She reminded him with a subtle smile on her face.

That smile which looked sad made Jamie lean away from her palm when he grasped the meaning behind her words.

An image of a certain older man appeared in his mind, the person who was the only reason she had agreed to get engaged to her now fiance, and a sudden annoyance rose in his chest.

"Ugh! I can never understand you!" He yelled right at her face, making her flinch but he did not care as his frustration was beyond compare.

Having said his piece, Jamie no longer wished to stay here and get irritated further.

Hence, decided to leave at once.

Demi watched as he stood up from her bed and strode towards the door, loud thuds echoing in her room which indicated that he was unhappy right now.

Just as he had stepped out of the room, he turned around and fixed his narrowed eyes, glaring at her.

"Oh, and don't get so close to Devon again!" He yelled one last time before slamming the door shut, disappearing from her sight.

His last sentence made Demi tilt her head as she could not understand how their conversation had shifted from her engagement to Devon, the youngest in their band.

However, when she thought of last night and how she had used the young man as a prop, she could decipher why Jamie had said so.

Images of her leaning close to him as she slid a finger across his smooth skin came to her mind.

"Poor guy had turned red..." She covered her mouth and chuckled when she recalled his pitiful yet cute appearance.

Knowing that she had acted out of line yesterday, she decided to apologize when she sees him today.

Lowering the hand that had covered her mouth, she stared at the large emerald on her finger with a complicated look in her green eyes.

Though Jamie knew the reason she had gotten engaged back then, he was still in the dark about why her engagement had continued until now.

After all, his statement about her and her fiance not liking each other was the truth.

Unfortunately, apart from her and her fiance, not another soul was aware of the reason why they had stayed together for so long and she intended to keep it that way.

It was better to keep Jamie away from it or who knows what kind of a fuss he would create when he learned the truth about this engagement.

Therefore, as always, she could only give him vague replies whenever he inquired about her engagement with that man.

Very soon though, she might be able to come clean to her best friend about everything.

'After all, our contract engagement ends soon...' She reminded herself and a bright smile formed on her face when she thought of the freedom that awaits her.
