The sweet scent of vanilla from the waffles Jane was baking filled the entire kitchen, making the early winter afternoon feel warm.
I sat anything but relaxed on one of the tall stools in front of the kitchen counter.
I chewed on my left thumbnail while reading Rafael's second message, my heart pounding like a teenager waiting for a text from her crush.
The chat window still showed that he was typing. Seemed like a long reply.
What was he going to say?
But then the typing indicator stopped.
The long message I had been expecting never came. Why? What happened?
"Mommy... why aren't you eating your waffle? It will get cold soon."
Roey's voice pulled my attention away. He was standing at the far end of the kitchen counter, staring at my untouched waffle with shameless longing.
"Can I eat it then? My tummy is so flat because of swimming in the cold."
