Chapter 262 - Waiting in Silence

Viona's POV

No matter how much I wanted to climb out of that black hole, I simply couldn't.

Even though I sat in broad daylight, with sunlight pouring through the tall windows all the way to the ceiling, even though the television in front of me was broadcasting news about the bombing at the hospital where Rafael had been stationed, all I could do was stare blankly at it. Hollow. Because everything still felt dark.

"Should I bring your lunch here?"

My mother's voice finally allowed the news on the television to register clearly again. She stood by the living room doorway, her face filled with worry.

I immediately rose from the sofa, grabbed the remote from the table, and switched the television off.

"No need. We can eat together."

I slipped my arm through hers. Her warmth seeped into my cold palm, a palm that had only grown colder over the week since the news of the bombing.
