Rafael's POV
How many days had it been since the first bombing? I'd lost count.
I opened the window of what used to be an office, now turned into a patient ward, and looked out at the dusty road where military jeeps and tanks rumbled past one after another. This was a small medical outpost in the middle of ruins near the conflict border. Even though both the enemy and our allies had declared this a neutral zone, the past few days had already proven it wouldn't stay that way for long.
I clenched my fist around the flash drive Maya Dennovan had given me and slipped it into my trouser pocket. It was the only thing I had managed to bring from the hospital after the bombing.
I walked through the crowded room where patients lay scattered with every kind of injury imaginable. The moment I stepped out of the office, a male volunteer suddenly vomited after removing the bandage from a patient's rotting wound. The sight and smell must have overwhelmed him.
I was already numb to it.
