Xu Mu looked at Chen Cai and smiled. "What else?"
"Of course, it's about my son. Name your terms—what do I need to do for you to give me that divine doctor's contact?"
These past few days, her son had been pestering her to death. And it really was a big deal—she was still counting on Feng Jian to marry Shen Wanning back home. As a woman, she knew all too well that a man couldn't be… incapable. She herself had suffered from that.
"I don't have any contact info," Xu Mu said with a smile. "They call him a divine doctor for a reason—here one moment, gone the next."
"Heh."
Chen Cai chuckled, then stood and walked to the long dining table. Picking up a bottle of Lafite, she gave it a little swirl toward Xu Mu. "Shall I have the dishes brought up? A few drinks before you go?"
"No need. I've got things to do—I'll be off."
Xu Mu stretched lazily, stood, and headed out.
"Then I won't see you out."
Chen Cai poured herself a glass, watching his retreating back as her gaze grew colder.
Outside the suite, Meng Wanyue immediately came over.
"Brother Xu! You got it, right? The divine doctor's medicine—"
"Ask your mom," Xu Mu cut in, looking at Feng Jian. "Made me come for nothing."
He left with Meng Wanyue by elevator.
Feng Jian's smile vanished at once. He strode back into the private room to find Chen Cai sipping wine at the table.
"Mom! What happened? Where's my medicine?!"
He'd thought that since his mom had invited Xu Mu tonight, his problem would finally be solved. He'd even started lining up a date on his phone just now.
"Useless thing! I used to think that even if you were hopeless, you were still better than Xu Mu. Now I see you're not even as good as he is!"
Chen Cai snorted. "Xu Mu has something on our family. He must die!"
"But if he dies—what about my condition…"
"I'll take you to the best hospital overseas," she said coolly.
"If it doesn't work? Mom, if it doesn't work I'm finished! You don't want that, do you?"
"With modern medicine, they can extract a bit and inject it into a woman, or use IVF—you can still have children. You just won't be… performing."
Chen Cai sipped her wine. "Quit fooling around. Women only slow down your progress."
—
Xu Mu and Meng Wanyue took the elevator to the first floor. Everything looked normal: staff busy with their tasks.
Back at the car, Xu Mu extended his senses. Same as before—upstairs, Chen Cai sat drinking at the table.
"No, this is definitely a Hongmen Banquet," Xu Mu said, then glanced at Meng Wanyue. "Wanyue, check if they planted anything on our car."
"Okay."
She scanned with her phone. "You called it, Manager Xu—there's a GPS tracker on our car. Looks like a basic model."
"Then it's stuck under the chassis." Xu Mu folded his arms, watching the window. "Leave it for now. Head back the way we came."
"Got it."
As they pulled out, Xu Mu sensed Chen Cai making a phone call.
Rumble—!
The road ahead shuddered. Two large freight trucks had collided, overturning and blocking the only route back into the city.
This wasn't a fender-bender—the trucks were on their sides. Clearing the road would take at least an hour.
Xu Mu smiled. So that was the play—wait for him here.
Most people would turn around and detour via the country road, which also led back into the city. No surprise if Chen Cai's people were waiting out there.
"Manager Xu, she's forcing us into the outskirts, isn't she?" said Meng Wanyue.
"Exactly. Someone's definitely lying in wait."
He was now a hundred percent sure: the moment they left, Chen Cai called to cue the truck drivers. And based on her chat with Dai Xiao at noon, there might even be martial artists involved.
"What should we do?" Meng Wanyue asked. "Wait here? Or turn back and circle around?"
"What do you think?" Xu Mu smiled.
"I think your safety is most important," she said. She preferred to wait—who knew what trap lay ahead? She can protect him, but why risk it?
"I've got an idea."
Xu Mu dialed Jiang Huihui. As a friend, he could toss her some performance credit.
"Xu Mu, what's up?" came her voice.
"I might be running into trouble. Looks like some martial artists are about to make a move on me—"
"Where are you? I'm coming right now!" she blurted, excited, not even letting him finish.
"This doesn't count toward the favor I owe you, right?" Xu Mu teased.
"Brother! This is me owing you a favor!" she said quickly. "Where are you? Send me the pin! And don't let Meng Wanyue make a move—save them for your little sister!"
Xu Mu smiled. "I'll send you the location."
After he hung up, Meng Wanyue gave him a thumbs-up. "Manager Xu, brilliant."
"Use the resources around you," Xu Mu said, reclining to wait.
—
Meanwhile, on the top floor, Chen Cai sipped wine and stared at the blinking dot on her phone. Her expression grew stranger by the minute.
Nearly twenty minutes, and Xu Mu's car hadn't moved.
Was he really going to wait for the road to be cleared?
They said he was hot-tempered—why would he sit there patiently?
"Could that brat have guessed I was going to hit him?"
Her face darkened as she dialed.
"Director Chen?" a middle-aged man answered.
"What's Xu Mu doing?" she snapped.
"No idea! He's just sitting in the car. They even turned the engine off."
"I don't care how—get him to turn around now!"
"Director Chen! A woman just got in his car… The car's moving! They turned around!"
"Good!"
She hung up and watched the cursor. Sure enough, it started to move.
"Whew." She exhaled, took another sip, and her eyes went cold. "Xu Mu, you shouldn't have crossed me."
—
"Brother, here—your reward."
Jiang Huihui hopped in and handed Xu Mu a stick of chewing gum.
"Not bubble gum today?" he grinned, taking it.
"Gotta change flavors sometimes."
She sat in the back seat, eyes fixed ahead. Finally, real business. It had been two months since her last fight, and the deadline for her family wager was getting close. No way was she marrying some stranger—she would complete her quota before then.
Meng Wanyue had already driven out beyond the city.
Suddenly, several cars parked by the roadside roared to life and boxed off the lane.
A crowd of masked men wielding rebar and machetes charged toward them.
